What would the maximum bore oversize that would work with file fit piston rings and stock pistons?

It depends on what the piston company recommends. As and example say they say .005 piston to wall, maybe you could get away with say .002 over if that would clean up the cylinder walls. Is that what your thinking on doing, use same pistons, clean up cylinder walls and some file fitted rings ?

Yep, the engine still has the stock pistons installed.

I mean I’ve seen guys just hone cylinders out and re-ring and not have issues. But main thing is to check cylinder and make sure there’s no taper. Most important part is make sure it has right cylinder wall finish so rings will seat.

If it where me though, if your going to go through all that, I would just go .030 over and just put new pistons in it. Going with a hone and re-ringing it, is like flipping a coin. May be good for a while.

Please do a cranking compression test on #1 cylinder and tells us what you get.

Question when you say all hashed up, did you pull the head off or look down with a camera. Just trying to visualize what you mean by hashed up.

I have a borescope that I used, there was no cross hatch left at all, just vertical score marks

Ok, now I get it. Sounds like rings got washed out. I think that will clean up with a good hone job, specially seeing that the compression still up there and good.

Did you check any of the other cylinders with the bore scope? To see if they look the same as #1 or not?

I have set of new plain iron rings for a std bore 400 in the garage.
If you decide to just hone it with new rings you can have them , just pay shipping.
I would like them to go to someone who could use them.

I appreciate the offer but I had to get file to fit rings for the first rebuild so std bore rings won't work. I'm thinking of just selling the car anyways, I've sunk a couple grand and about 2 months just to get back where I started.
