Let me ask you, was the block bored the first time, or did you just use standard pistons that cam in motor originally and just hone it and put in new file fitted rings in.

Standard pistons and a hone, it didn't need to be bored, the taper and wall condition were good enough to not have it bored

I’d have to see what the cylinder walls look like. I’m thinking if the compression good say 150 in each cylinder, figure out why its sucking oil down the intake, when you say intake you meaning intake of the head.

I am going to try and hone it first, I'm not sure if I can get away with it though

Are you ball honing it which would be a safe first step to see how it might clean up?

yes, I originally thought it was gas from the carb being misadjusted but the intake walls and floor were covered in oil

I will be using a three-stone hone, would there be an advantage to using a ball hone?

Yes a 320 grit ball hone would remove far less material, In the fact if it did not clean up ok with such a hone then you likely would have to over bore the cylinder if not the motor.

What also concerns me is that I don’t think that poor ring seal in and of itself can account for a ton of oil found in your intake, and signs of running rich from a bum carb would not show up in just one cylinder if that’s what you’ve been thinking.

Anyway, first things first and seeing if that cylinder can be saved is what to look at now.

Is 320 grit ok for plain cast rings?

What makes someone think that there was poor ring sealing?

Did I miss pictures of oil in the intake manifold?

Lou,
I don't know what is going on.

If there was poor ring seal and oil was coming up pass the rings then why didn't it show in the cylinder /chamber when using the bore scope. If it did that and was said I don't remember seeing it.

Stan

Good news, the crosshatch is still in all 8 cylinders, but there Is enough oil in the cylinders to pool on the valve reliefs. The pistons were 100 percent clean when this went together

Does that oil seem like it been thinned out by running rich?

That much oil getting in would kill off whatever the octane level was in the fuel you where running making for ping and detonation.

Stock cast pistons can not withstand much of that without cracking and many times braking the rings with them.

This leaves pretty good signs of scratching up & down the bore(s) .

Are you seeing any signs of that?

With the pistons at TDC do any of them rock more then others?
This can be a sign of broken rings.

If you have someone bar the motor over as you listen into each cylinder, pistons that are busted and of have broken rings will make a scraping sound when they travel the bore much more then cylinders that are ok.
Your into it so far now you may have to pop the pistons out to look at them!
