Fifty years ago I was in junior high and had just got the Pontiac bug. The local dealership that sold Pontiacs had a white 74 Trans Am in stock. (See photo) For some reason they always parked in on the side of the lot so I'd stop and press my nose to the windows every time I went past. I remember it being on the lot all summer. That was a lot of nose prints someone had to clean up.

Other than that I was living the life like Patrick McManus from his books like "A fine and pleasant misery." in Sandpoint ID. Spent summers mowing lawns and going everywhere by bicycle with a fishing pole. Winters shoveling snow and walking everywhere if it was too snowy to ride my bike.

Wow, 50 years ago. I was in college , wrestling in Delhi New York at our regional tournament. There I lost to the national champ by a couple points and that ended my tournament.
I got into Cars (Trans Ams) soon after that. It’s always been high school , college and international-wrestling first and then Cars.

I graduated from High School in 1976 and started Tech school for auto mechanics in the fall. I had bought my 67 GTO in Feb of 1975 and was starting to make some changes to it. I drove my GTO to Canada that summer and had to replace my fuel pump in Nestor Falls Ontario. Made a lot of changes to the car in the following 2 years while attending tech school. Planning to start driving it again this summer after it setting in my garage for the last 27 years. It was last driven in Sept of 1999.

50 years ago I was 6 moths old riding around in the 70 LeMans my parents had bought 7 months ago (after selling their 68 Firebird). I grew up with that silver LeMans with green interior until about 3rd grade. My dad kept it around and I drove it to high school practically destroying the car. In 99 a tree fell on it and our 70 GTO, the GTO got fixed, the LeMans got stuffed in a barn. Around 2012 we decided to see if it would start and it drove out of the barn on old gas and 4 flats.

2013 the car is restored and still runs and drives on the original motor, trans and diff that have never been taken apart.

This car had been part of my life since day 1 and currently sits in my garage. Never plan on letting this car go after so much history.

50 years ago, I had finished military service, and used the GI bill to acquire a BS in computer science.

Was working for a state agency, as well as moon-lighting as a college teacher (later became department head), also moonlighting as the owner of the newly formed Carburetor Shop.

Had a 1964 GTO, but had not yet been bitten by the "buy American only" bug, and family car was a Toyota. Lady at work had a 6-year-old Toyota that needed tires and bought a set of retreads from the local cut-rate store. Car had a horrible balance issue, and she asked me to diagnose the issue. Told her it was the cheap tires, which she didn't want to hear. She took it to a couple of "chain" repair shops, spent more money, and didn't help the problem. She finally asked me if I would buy the car for $500; I said sure, but it is worth more than that. She made some nasty comment about it couldn't be driven, and if I was so *&^%$ smart I could have it for the $500. Took it home, pitched the retreads and put on a used set of Michelins. Work started sending me all over the state, and paid so much a mile if I used my own car. Drove that car over 200,000 miles, and when I sold it, counting ALL costs including license and insurance I made a $70 profit !!!

In addition to work activities, sponsored and coached little league.

Lots going on, can not do nearly so much now.

Driving my recently purchased original 69 Z/28 Camaro and playing in a local rock band. Car was sold ages ago but still friends with some of the band members. Wish I still had the car!

Was my last semester of college, typing job applications to every company I could think of. I still have my collection of bite-me letters from dozens that weren't hiring - was a tough year. Came close to working for Perfect Circle in Indiana - something to do with camshafts. I was excited when Ford invited me to interview in their foundry. Then they backed out. Bummer. I was SOOOOO ready for a paycheck.

Was driving Frank Fairlane, a tired 66 390 GT 4-spd. Could barely afford the gas but 8-track tapes were in the budget.

I was 19 yrs old, had graduated high school the previous summer. I was working at a machine shop, was saving money for college. My dad and I disagreed on my future. He wanted me to go to a local college for business, and I wanted to go into engineering. My dad had a dealer's license and owned a garage. I had a 1967 Firebird 400 4-spd that I had just replaced the tired 400HO with a 1971 455HO. That's when I found out the difference between round port and D-port. The car was down for a month while I waited for some very expensive headers to arrive that would fit the round ports. I wish I had bought a set of factory round ports exhaust manifolds, but they were pretty pricey at the time. Having the car down wasn't a problem because I had a second car, which I wrecked a few months later. It was a 1968 Torino GT convertible with a 390 4-spd. It went to the great junk yard in the sky around April 1976. A guy ran a stop sign and hit me in the left rear quarter. I got a decent check from the insurance company for it. Around early summer 1974, I bought the car I probably regret selling the most. It was a 1964 Buick Riviera w/dual quad 425 engine. I really liked that car, and I still miss it. the gas mileage was horrible. that's around the same time I graduated to a street motorcycle. I started with a 2-stroke Suzuki GT380. I wanted a little more power, so I sold it and got a widow maker (Kawasaki 750 2-stroke). The bike scared me, it was wobbly at anything over the speed limit. I sold it, and bought a 1974 Suzuki GT-550. I went to college for engineering the following year (1977). I sold the Firebird, parked the Riviera (it was a gas hog), and started driving something more economical for a couple of years.

My dad had a dealer license at the time, which is how I could afford to own multiple cars. I was also working two jobs. I was working at the machine shop during the day, and in the evenings I worked for my dad in his garage. That allowed me to save enough money to pay for my first year of college in cash.

I also had Kawasaki, it was the 500 2 stroke; scary still. In '76 I was in my first real job at Motorola Automotive.
A few years later I was at Sun Electric. Drove a '67 Lemans Sprint at the time.

50 years ago I was close to graduating from HS. Bicentennial class. Senior year only had to go to school 1/2 day. Worked at a Gulf service station full time 3-11 PM every day. Rode a bicycle to work every day. My father had taken my drivers license away for 1 year. I had totaled my first car, a 1968 Firebird Sprint 3-speed. He did what the cops did not. I wasn't even cited. My one and only accident other than a few parking lot scrapes. The following year, I was a mechanic at the local Pontiac dealer.

Every Friday nite my bud and me had a party at his house.
Imagine keger with var guys icluding athletes on basketball and football teams.
