Picked up this 64 GTO. PHS Docs, 389 tri-power,4 spd, 3:90 safe-t-track. It has some nice options: Tach, sport wheel covers, console,ps,sport steering wheel(unfortunately modified),padded dash. Original seats/panels have been changed to black at some point.

Nice car!
Add some period-correct white wall or redline tires and original valve covers and it’s even better. Too bad about someone thinking drilling holes and it looks like painting the rim black would be an improvement. Maybe a skilled welder could close up those holes being extra careful near the plastic rim, then someone could smooth the welds and restore the finish. You could then carefully remove the black paint. Still a stunning example with the best performance options anyone could hope for.

Nice car!
Is a shame that someone "improved" the best looking steering wheel ever made. I think I could TIG weld those shut with plugs and restore it. |

Put a set of 3.42's in it.
You'll be happy you did. Engine will thank you as well.

1964 GTO heads would be unlikely candidates for screw-in studs, roller rockers and a stud girdle thereby requiring tall valve covers at least in my mind. I have roller rockers and screw-in studs on my 1964 GTO heads with stock valve covers and a slightly thicker 5/16” gasket and that’s it. The vast majority of 1964 GTOs have just the original press-in rocker studs and original stamped steel 1.5:1 rockers you can bet.

If the stock 1964 valve covers don’t want to fit your points of interference are most likely the polylock nuts. You can buy shorter ones or trim yours down on the bottom using a lathe.
In the post linked below there’s a couple of pictures of what my builder did to make my roller rockers fit under the stock covers: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...&postcount=132 One more thing to consider would be to see if the rockers are high quality cast stainless steel or aluminum extrusions or just cheap cast aluminum ones. A lot of people use the Comp roller tip rockers that still have the pivot ball (they’re known for galling and turning blue from heat due to poor fit) which really aren’t any better than stock rockers and sometimes not as good. Inspect them no matter what type for cracking or defects such as the axle for the roller tip coming loose. If you’re really wanting to run stock covers then perhaps replace them with stock rockers if that makes sense so long as they’re compatible with your engine build.

3.42's never came in an 8.2 ten bolt. the best the OP could do would be to install a set of 3.55's or 3.36's. But with the stock M-21, why? If I were him, I'd enjoy the car as is, at least for now. It's a beaut!
