Default comp ultra gold vs original harland sharp

I'm pretty sure both of these are pretty close as far as quality goes. I had the ultras set aside that i was gonna and will use but i wondered which set would work best for solid roller use...say 650 ish # open pressure?.

not sure how great a deal it was but today i went to go order the last set of hs s6001-15 that summit showed in stock yesterday and bam...someone done bough'em.....in my google quest amazon showed 3 sets in stock....but recomended a new but open box set for 268.00....i kinda couldnt not jump on that deal.

the old original Harland Sharpe rockers can't be used easily with a big roller cam spring retainer, the retainer and spring will hit the underside of the rocker.
I bought a set from old man Mr. Butler back in the 1990's, he had mocked up a motor with them, and they hit, so he sold them to me on the cheap back then. They had tiny horizontal marks in them on the valve side underneath. I used them on a RA V 455 tunnel port motor with big retainers and springs, they did the same thing. So I had to laboriously hand clearance every single rocker arm, to the larger retainer size, and cut/try until they didn't make a mark anymore underneath- grinding away the mark with a mini air grinder, and trying again. takes a LONG TIME to do all 16. the cam was a 250 @ 050" solid with .560" lift w/1.65's, smallish cam but they still hit.
they will work just fine with Pontiac factory diameter springs and retainers, or aftermarket the same dimensions.
if you want a rocker that fits everything get the Crane gold

I have a set of Comp golds 1.65 on the shelf tried to fit them to my NOS old Edelbrock roundports, .... seemed i could not nail down a good push rod length with them ... bought old school Harlans dropped them on figured push rod easy, .... the Comp golds have the toller tip closer to the fulcrum than Harlans ... i saved the Comp golds because i had them to long plus they would work well on say D'ports with longer valves IE valve tip closer to fulcrum..

just my hands on experience

never tried them, and you don't know until you do.
call Comp, ask them, they'll know what size retainer will clear.

Rocker arms have changed over the years. I posted pictures of two Crane Gold rockers. One is older and the other is a much later design. Look at the body and bearing differences between the old and new. The third picture shows both designs needed to be clearanced for retainer interference. Also the later unit has a witness mark from colliding with the retainer even after it was machined.

You can't call a company and get accurate information as to what size retainer will fit their rocker arm. There are too many variables.

IMO Comp Cams coming out with their "Gold" rocker arms was a ploy to gain sales off the great reputation Crane built with their "gold" rocker arms. For that reason we avoid using them. I will say the few sets we used when they first came out suffered from poor quality control .... Or maybe it could be said as poor quality. Regardless we try to avoid them.

Harland Sharp is a great company and offers a great product. They offer several different options for our Pontiac's. One of those is a heavy duty design for increased spring pressures. Those are the only HS rockers I'll use with solid roller builds. I know our experience is different from most but I've taken apart many engines with beat up HS rockers that didn't live well behind solid roller valve springs .... I feel there are much better options.

im really hoping i can make the comp golds work with the edelbrock d ports and the hr springs and retainers that come with them. i was actually leaning torward the hd HS before i ran across the comp golds on the fb market place...smh i gotta stay off there.. sounds like for one of the solid roller set ups i better place my bets on the HS that i have.

off topic of these 2 brands, i picked up a new set of crower alum 1.7's . have you ran any of these in your builds?

The new CompCams Ultra-Gold ARC rockers come with the spring reliefs already cut in. I do not think they sell the previous versions for Pontiac anymore.

They clear my hydraulic roller just fine. Butler-CompCams 236/242, 0.573"/0.594" (1.65 ratio rockers).

There's other considerations also to be aware of.
If your wanting to make the most HP once your motor goes passed peak torque then you need to look at how the rocker ratio changes in terms of the arc that it makes.

Look at the starting , average and max ration numbers from these BBC rockers from different manufacturers that where looked .

These ratio numbers where taken off a Cam of on,y 230 @ .050".
Greater duration numbers will show more differentces.

This. There are 3 models of HS rockers, 'Original', Heavy Duty, and Diamond. Never use the original on springs over 400# open (that is from memory, needs to be verified). The Heavy Duty specifically states open spring psi of over 1000#. Diamond, which is first I've notice this offering, is a 'lightened' version, but no spring psi listed. Sure a call would clear that up.

https://harlandsharp.com/pages/styles

All need to be clearanced for the build, there's no way to know what needs to be clearanced without actually mocking it up on your specific build.

Only other rocker I will personally use, and is my go-to, is the Crower Enduro, and IMO is the only option for a performance engine (mid-level). Sure, you can go to a shaft setup, but unless your turning serious RPMs, the ROI is non-existent.

The Enduro's are reliable, rebuildable, and will last a lifetime.

I have a set of Scorpions on my Olds 495 stroker, provided with the heads by Bernard, and have no problem with them. Scorpion too has multiple models, and think the bad rap comes from people trying to use the entry level model where it doesn't belong.

I will say, if I wouldn't have gotten such a great deal on the rockers, I would have just used Crowers.
