Camshaft ID
Anyone have any experience with this cam? I believe it's Comp Cams early version of the XR288HR-10?

I suspect the "R' stands for solid roller. If it was a hydraulic roller it might be engraved "HR".

To check the lobe lift on a camshaft, measure the largest diameter of the cam lobe (at its highest point) with a digital caliper, then measure the diameter of the base circle
(the flat section between lobes), and subtract the base circle diameter from the lobe diameter to get the lobe lift; essentially, you are calculating the vertical distance the cam lobe rises from its base circle. Start here.... The XE hydraulic roller lobe 3346 has 0.3060" lobe lift The XE solid roller lobe 4857 has 0.3350" lobe lift Both are rated with 288 degrees .

I have a P288R-10 cam and it is a magnum solid roller. I would say it was a decent working street/strip cam.
Had a fairly racy idle but worked OK with the power brake on my 69 firebird. It is 244/244 at .050 with .3666 lobe lift with 110 lobe separation. Glenn |

Thanks everyone for all the information. I got the cam when I bought out a gentleman who had given up on his restoration project. It came in a box with a set of hydraulic roller lifters.
The cam and lifters were supposedly installed and ran less than 50 miles. At that point he decided the cam was too big for him so he had it replaced with a smaller cam. All this was before he disassembled the car to restore it and never finished it.
