getting up to .600 at the valve, what springs are you using? any reason to use a smaller lobe with a high ratio rocker instead of something like the OF lobes with a 1.5?

I did not order the cam,bought it from a friend that had it.I usually try to get closer to 400 lobe lift and run 1.65 rockers.We will use what ever springs necessary for the cam and get me 150 on the seats.Tom

Thanks. Going to roll the dice and likely get the Ram Air IV roller cam. Bullet is 6 weeks out so a custom grind not happening.

It must be 455 HO season, I'm pretty much doing the same thing you are. I'm using the stock HO intake, heads, and exhaust manifolds. I have a 71 455 HO, 4 spd, 3:55 rear GTO. I have been messaging Butler about a cam and pistons, and other items. The cam Butler picked out was there Hi-Torq Street Performance Billet Roller Cam. 282/288, 230/236, .510/.521, LS 112. Comp Cams HR Lifters CCA-85701-16. For pistons I'm looking at DDS with -7cc valve reliefs. They also recommended the 80 psi oil pump, which I'm not sure about. What are the specs on the RAIV cam? Yes it is their spec'd Ram Air IV roller on a 113.
Just looking ahead as someday may want more power and would swap my Edelbrock heads on this block that would really put this cam to use. Went with Ross pistons - DSS or Autotec could be made in a week though I found out. I went with their 60/70lb pump. May run it at 70lbs. Good luck on your build. Fun stuff staying stock-ish. Something I have not done in 20+ years. |

Factory 455 cranks are crossdrilled and already provide better rod oiling then the non crossdrilled 3.00” main cranks.
That said they do have 8% more main jurnal area then a 3.00 main crank so they do first off need more oil volume, and then secondly some added pressure., but 80 psi is not needed. The best thing to do to make the most of the pressure ( and flow volume) that your pump has is mount a remote oil filter with a 2 qt Ford type truck filter on it.

My 455 was built in 2009. 30 over, zero decked, 6X-8 head mild porting, 9.3:1. The top side is a Crane 041 with Comp lifters and roller tip rockers. Dyno’d out at 400 HP, 500 lb-ft. Engine sat for years and came online about 4-5 years ago. Had to replace the stock 3/8” rocker studs with 7/16” BBC studs when one snapped early on. Stayed with the with Comp roller tips and the rods (from a kit) and been driving it. Lifters and rockers got noisier last year. Seems to have lost a step. In retrospect, I think the rocker geometry is not right. Rods that came with the rockers were a one size fits all kit that you can still purchase. I don’t think that’s a wise move unless the engine is very close to stock.
Engine is coming out soon and the top side is getting a second look. Same cam, but with Crower SS rockers (1.5), Rhoads V-Pro Street lifters, and proper rocker geometry and new rods to match. Should have it back on the road in a month or so and will report back. |
