I just acquired a '66 GTO, and I have a tire/wheel question.
But for some seemingly stupid reason, I cannot get a picture of the tire & wheel to load.

So, here goes, the tires are P215/70R15 BFG white letter radial T/A's.
They are mounted on a set of older American (Torque Thrust, I think) wheels.

When turning, right or left, I'm getting a rub, it feels like (I had nobody to observe) the tire is briefly rubbing the edge of the front fender lip. As I turn more it ceases, then rubs again, as it returns to center.

So, if the wheel has to much offset, will this cause the rub?

The car has front disc brakes.

I would like to keep these wheels if possible, as when looking at "American Wheels", the same wheel isnot offered.

What suggestions or recommendations can Y'all make?

A smaller tire? It wouldn't look as good, would it?
Wish I knew the particular model. width, off-set, etc

If you really like those wheels, I'd change out the front tires to a pair of 215/65/15 BFG's. Those would be about 1" shorter in diameter and give you an extra half inch of clearance.

The 215/70/15's are 26.9", the 215/65/15's are 26".

I forgot that my first set of redline tires were 215/65/15's on my '64...

Your front disc brakes make the BS on those older rims a bigger problem than I thought. The disc brakes typically need about an extra .25" BS for clearance.

As to different size tires front and rear - I personally prefer the staggered look with a taller tire on the rear. Once I replaced my 215/65/15 redlines on all four wheels, I went to 235/60/15's front and 255/60/15 rear. When I went to 17's I went to 215/55/17's front and 245/50/17's rear. I just replaced those and went with the same front tires but wanted a taller tire in the rear so went with a 235/55/17.

You said you just bought the tires - Maybe you could work a deal with the tire dealer to:

1. Test mount a set of 215/65/15's to see if that does solve your problem.

2. Take your slightly used 15/70/15's in trade - (discounted value).

One of the reasons 67 fenders have scallops cut out of the lips on top for tire clearance.

Hi,
I went by the tire store to get the tires on my Colorado "ZR-2" rotated.
They are "BFG" dealer, among other tires.
He was quite helpful. BFG makes a "215/60R15", the same width as my current 215/70R15 tires. The "60" series tire is 1.7" smaller in diameter, which I think will give enough clearance with the leading edge of the front fender. The back is not an issue, and has claearance turning i both directions. This will give me an increase in clearance of ".85", which I think will work. When I get back in town, we are going to try it, as he has a "215/60R15 in stock. I do not think it will alter the stance either.
So, if this works, two tires are a lot cheaper than 4!
I think I can sell the two "P215/70R15's" that are on the front.

As a side note, BFG no longer makes the 215/65R15 tire.

The 215/60/15 is too short and will look funny in my opinion. The tire heights for 215's are:

60 series 25.2

65 series 26

70 series 26.9

The stance will be altered with either the 60 or the 65 series. The 60 series the front end with drop .85", with the 65 series the front end will only drop .45".

Have you dealer double check the availability of the 215/65/15!
