Default KRE heads or….

I am looking to order a set of KRE D ports, where do you guys order them from? I have a 462 with forged lower I’m building, I picked up some unported Butler 6x heads recently but am looking for a better head. I think I’m better off with the KRE’s rather than throwing money at these 6x’s. It will be a mild build, I called butler and their 6 months out and 2-3 k to port my heads. Thanks guys

I purchased my directly from KRE. They have three options on the chamber size, if you’re planning on running pump gas I would go with the 85 cc version.

What’s your hp goals for this 462?

The last set of out of the box KRE D ports I had flowed 260 or so before I ported them .

If you run enough lift and even a can of 232 at .050” you should make an easy 475 hp with the out of the box heads.

You did not mention what that price tag for the 6X reworked heads got your for intake air flow, but since Butler was going to port them I will say you would have been looking at that same 260 cfm, not that they could not be ported to more then 260, I am just going with average numbers here.

With the wait time you posted about I would opt for the KRE heads also.

When you get them you should strongly consider installing heli coils in the rocker stud holes and use some anti seize on all the other bolts that then should be carefully threaded into the head.

Order directly from Kauffman. www.krepower.com

For a mild build, no real reason to do any porting, their as cast head with a mild hydraulic roller will sit your around 500hp plus or minus depending on what cam you end up with. You do have room to grow later on if you want or need.

I just had my KRE D's refurbished last year and went to their 310cfm port and port matched my torker II manifold. With a .6" lift 240/248 on 112 hydraulic roller, spec'd by Jeff, the engine made 580/600.

The KRE heads were one of the better upgrades I've made over the life of the car. One thing to note is that they do not have an exhaust cross-over on them. If you're running a carb and utilizing the vehicle in cold weather, you may lack some of the streetability you would otherwise have. An Edelbrock D port may be a better choice if the car is going to be opperated in winter environments with a carb. Should you decide to run any of the throttle body injection units, the lack of an exhaust cross-over works to your advantage.

I didn’t inquire any further about the amount of flow after the 6 month lead time. 500 hp would be adequate, the larger 85 CC is what I would get as it’ll be pump gas. 230’s /240’s at .050.

This would be a weekend car, so no cold winter driving.

That's been a long time complaint with those heads. Why KRE doesn't have inserts there boggles me. For sure that should be done and added to the cost.

It's one reason why some people prefer the eddy heads.

Buy them direct from Kauffman. I've got a set of Edelbrocks and KREs and drove them both in 30° weather with a carb, no issues. Both are great.
JL Mounce that's a nice build, any timeslip yet?
Tom, I'm curious why you like the KREs better

I got my as-cast D-port heads direct from KRE. Also have their KRE 242 cam and Northwind manifold topped by an 850 dp. My 68 Firebird weighs 3690 with me in it and ran 11.56 @ 118.75 the first time out this past weekend.

Pretty similar combo to what I was thinking of getting. How does it drive ? Automatic ? I was thinking of a 4 or 5 speed for mine.

I was also considering the edelbrock round ports, as there is one for sale locally. It’s the performer 60579 87cc

No timeslips. Bandimere is closed unfortunately.

On the street it's an animal though.
