My vin number says the car was an 81 turbo trans am from the factory. Someone put a 350 in it when the turbo died and tried to clone a formula. I now have a Pontiac 400 block in the car. See in the pic how far the shaker sits to one side? And that’s with the element mounted as far the other way it will go as well. I’ve seen a few pics online of cars with the shaker off by the same amount. Is it possible cars that were originally 301 turbo cars were set up a little different to cause this ?

301t cars & engine bays are the same as non 301t cars, same mounts & all. The crooked off center shakers are usually related to bent frames in the cross member area that allows the whole engine to sit to one side... not saying thats your issue but Ive seen it on quite a few cars over the years that werent 301t cars originally.

I have paperwork from a frame/body shop stating the frame is not bent but I suppose anything can be possible. It’s just that it’s off by several inches and the body looks straight to the eye. Not to mention there should be other things off but nothing looks wrong. I would also think the nose would be farther off center than the cowl area and that doesn’t seem the case here as well.

Shoot some pictures of the Shaker base in the scoop, maybe one for a SBC?

My 81 has a Performer intake a little low in rear but centered. My 78 has a T2 and is centered. So like he asked intake, base.

Sorry for the delay. Here are pics. The “carb stud” is 29.125” to the drivers fender edge and 28.00” from the passenger side. I guess the fenders are out of wack at least. Possible the whole front clip is pushed over but you can’t tell from looking at the outside of the car and my body panels are not off by that much. The intake is a Northwind. Holley terminator and gen IV

Im not familiar with the aftermarket drop base air cleaner set ups, or how the shaker plate is attached to it, maybe thats related?
But the front clip or subframe/core support can be off side to side, was that measured when put back together? Can measure it now to see if its off, subframe to rocker panels as well as an X measurement from top rear fender mount bolts to top core support fender bolts, should be equal. |
