i been strongly reconsidering the jerico setup behind any of the possible motor combos i have that an 871 might land on top of. with 31x18.50 slicks on my 65 im not sure what will give first, the tire or the trans parts. i have my 66 that the jerico could possibly live forever in so it maybe a better fit.
in anycase i bought cliffs th400 book a few years back after having two bad rebuilds on the same trans. somehow my son, senior in high school at time read the book, and with minimal tools build a really nice working trans....now it turns out i have a couple cores under the shelf and thought maybe i should let him try his luck with that book again along with some better parts. what all would you guys think would be needed up to 1k hp? |

Good cooler, fluid and sprag, no first to second gear burnouts and functioning factory parts will last longer then most might think.
I have a few under my belt nothing more than Torrington bearings instead of shims, alto reds smooth drum, rmvb/brake. I usually juggle thin steels to get an extra friction in the drums and maintain the clearances toward the looser side of the specs. My buddy has an 871 454 pro street nova I did a trans for him 20 years ago. I have it a tail light warranty because he drives the crap out of his car and beats it up hard. Still never been touched in 20 years Keep in mind you have a cast drum spinning pretty damn fast next to your nuts, trans shield or blanket highly recommended. If you can an upgraded input shaft and aluminum drum are wise upgrades, but not required for 1k hp in my opinion

up til just now i thought a manual flywheel/clutch explosion was the the worst thing about a transmission...that drum spinning pretty damn faat by the boys puts things in awhole new light.
i did do some reading that mentioned the upgrade to 36 sprag and input/drum....looks like thats where it starts getting pricey. i k ow the nitrous guys use anti balloon plates on the convertors, is that a problem with boosted as well? i kinda figured i some areas they share the same issues between the 2. lol the guy that built my last 400...2 times didnt even offer a walk out garage warranty. advertised as local performance builder but we couldnt make it work behind a 326 or a mild 400 |

Yes buy a good converter it probably won't blow up but a cheap one will push the crank forward and blow your motor

Boosted with Slicks means a review of the hard parts for TQ.
The review Includes TQ thru Tail mount and crossmember mount. Mid-plate will likely help to save the TH400 Case. Seems to me the rpm is an issue with NA, NOS, turbos, yet usually not an issue with Roots boost; unless going hi-rpm. Conv ballooning is a function of launch dumping & TQ thru it, so anti-balloon plate(s). |

You mention 1000 HP through the th400, and giving up a Jerico for that. From my memory, and doing the math in my head, it'll take about 1700 HP with an automatic to be 1/2 as fun as 800 HP with a Jerico.
Seriously: I twisted a th350 input off with a very mild 455, stock (tight) converter, and a hard shift kit. Upgrade the th400 input for sure.

i originally bought jerico for my 66 with a na 455. when i got the 65 i had decided to keep the 66 abit more tame and use the jerico in the 65. but now ive ended up with alot of parts and the na 455 is set aside for my sons car. the 66 will end up with a smaller easier on parts 400 or 434 with paxton. if i didnt have the th400s sitting there...id probably not consider the swap but |
