The walls in the shop addition are about 18’ tall I think? The HOA made me match the height of the original structure but in the end I’m glad they did.

The GN is a very different car than the GTO’s we are used to. Quiet, tame and then explodes with power! My friend got that car brand new when he turned 16. I can’t imagine that! I bought it from him about 8 years ago before the prices went crazy on these.

Our last house had space, buried utilities, and a lot of buried irrigation pipe. Power went from garage to shed underground. That line also fed our mission-critical irrigation pump.

When the city brought in a fiber company, they used guided boring for installation.

They managed to knick the power line to the shed and I suspect at least 20% of every irrigation line in the neighborhood. The power line opened up a year later and I had to eat the replacement.

Net: try to make EVERY buried pipe, conduit, drain, and line traceable. The utility companies won't mark irrigation, nor anything they cannot detect. But you can. Don't save a nickel by using direct buried cable for anything. Run the conduit.

You WILL be digging/trenching/boring around your shop later...

Just got started over the last weekend. Put up 6 of the 10 I-beams and started to frame in the garage door openings. here are a couple of pics if you are curious.

Little more progress. 35 hours of work with a helper has gotten me this far. Not as difficult as I thought. another two- three weeks and I may have this mostly completed.
Got to love the weather in Texas. Crazy warm December and Jan to make this possible.

Yeah, the golf course (in shorts) was great yesterday!

Looking good, Russ. You might take a little time with skeleton up to think electric. Where do you want the outlets, internal wiring for 120/240 Welding, Compressor, Lifts, etc.? I didn't do a very good job of preplanning, but I did get it straightened out after more work than necessary.

Ogre you are correct on the planning. I have a nice little hand drawing of the shop area and a basic layout of the electrical and air lines and where the lifts are going and power for them. Some things I cannot plan for and will adjust on the fly but will over build the electrical panel and feeds just in case for upgrades and unknowns. Don't know what I need for the paint booth as of yet. depends on the model and set-up for that. Your shop turned out very nicely equipped. You went the extra step on the outside with the stone and nice trim.
The only thing I am going to do is a Wainscott trim on the outside with gutters.
I was a journey man electrician in another life and have vast experience doing
commercial electrical work when I was younger. All my set-up will be bent conduit and metal boxes with a very nice and tidy layout that looks uniform and well placed. I am a little OCD about that stuff. Bugs me if it does not look right.

I might be getting a bit ahead of you, but for the vaulted ceilings in ours we did white aluminum siding. Whole lot lighter than OSB (which we did on the walls) or drywall. The white also reflects the lights really well and it's pretty bright in there even though there aren't lights going down the whole ceiling. We also did electrical cord reels from the ceiling, pretty helpful if you need to power something in the middle of the shop and don't have an outlet near by or don't want to run an extension cord.

My recommendation is to make as much storage as you can, on the walls, on the ceiling, shelving units. I welded caster wheels to some shelving units and I ran out of room, a lot of wood on shelves on the wall. And I need a racking system on the ceiling to hold all the front end metal off my 56 star chief. These photos were before I got to hoarding everything and no room

I hired a neighbor (licensed electrician from a local school), and you would be amazed at the number of junction boxes. I guess that's the right way to do it though. He hid "most" of my 12/3 metal clad wiring in the purlin but there sure are a lot of junction boxes for feeding multiple overhead lights.

And I do like Joog's white siding on the ceilings. It does brighten the area up. My ceiling is chicken wire covering the white insulation (not really reflective). [See post #32, pics 4 & 5.]

And Joog and others have mentioned storage. Yes, whatever you have you will use and then need more. Do what you can, but it won't be enough for us crazy enough to restore cars.

That seems to work very well. I can tell it is very reflective.
I am going to see how much light I get from the four commercial 11X11 doors I have to install with one big glass section in each door. They are Overhead door model 418. Very curious as to how much light they let in and how my shop doors are positioned to the east and west.

I do like the look of the panels on the ceiling. Looks clean

I like the way perfectly bent conduit looks with the correct clamps.
I will not be hiding my piping in the purlins.
I like the exposed industrial look if it is clean and tidy.
Air lines will be copper pipe under the electrical layout.
But I have seen a new product that looks likes plastic pipe but acts like metal
and you can bend it and shape it.

Finished the last of the welding on the shop on Thursday. Glad that's over. Seeing welded metal in my dreams. Only have to cut the roof Perlin's to length and add the L-channel.
Will start to add the wainscotting and metal next week.

Looking good. Looks like you are set up for more than one rollup door. At times I wish I had another door, but I make do with just the one.

I think I may have gone too far with 4 doors. But I will probably be glad I have them due to the way my shop faces. Wish I could have put the gable end toward the street. I would have only needed two.
The price is a little more than I realized.
overhead doors have gotten expensive.
Yes, the weather is nice for this time of year. Wish it would quit raining on Saturdays. Typical Texas.
Started the sheet metal this week.
Maybe have it dried in in a couple of weeks.

Awesome job so far, congrats. I'm starting my build in a few weeks at my place in Pecan Gap, Tx and can't wait, had the slab poured in October. I agree that the doors got out of bounds, I went with the cheaper roll-ups over the sectional ones.
