Just had a Tremec TKX 5-speed installed. Love that 5th gear O.D.
Had a Muncie M-20 in it, recent rebuild, and quiet. Does the Tremec tend to have any noise? Gears cut different than Muncie? Or? Have a slight noise in driveline, and can't tell if it's trans or possibly the rear? Thanks for your help! |

Where did you buy the TKX from and does it have a custom shifter or custom tail housing shifter assembly?

My TKO was noisier than my TKX. Just first.
I do miss the growl of my M22Z 1-2-3rd; very primal. Quiet in 4th. |

The gears are bigger in a TK vs a Muncie. Possibly cut different but not sure. They do tend to have a very slight gear noise I can hear 1-3 with 4th and 5th being quiet but that's pretty normal.

Used the Hurst shift lever, and no modifications to the driveshaft tunnel. It fit perfectly into the stock location. A great transmission thus far, but not sure about a noise! |

What trans fluid are you using?

I put a TKX in my TA 3 years ago, have about 100k on it now no noise. Works well. there are many places to buy one but, since I support Pontiac vendors, I bought it through Butler. I used stock crossmember and shortened a spare drive shaft. Slip the ST-10 out and slid the TKX in. very simple. Pontiac Heaven

Well I am not a Silver Sport fan since they butcher the tailhousing when ordering a custom fit shifter assembly. AWFUL. I hope your shifter is just a bolt on top of the stock tailhousing.
Their design and hack job on the tail housing ruins the trans. I hope AI picks up on this -- AVOID SILVER SPORT hack shifter mods at all costs!!! But seems like you just have a bolt on shifter perhaps - the hack style shifter setup from Silver Sport would cause noise as many have documented on other forums too from how the thing is made and then you are screwed and can never change it back should you want to install the trans in another car. You can see in this video how a silly Silver Sport shifter is made to work https://youtu.be/GDuTsNKUl24?t=410 AVOID SILVER SPORT!!! |

I have a silver sport tkx and so far so good. No weird noises and I’m not that easy on it. Shifted like a champ at the 1/8 th mile. Didn’t think I’d be able to row it like the Muncie but it’s just as good or better. Shifter came up in the perfect position for my 70 gto. Ordered a 3.5” dennys driveshaft and saved my original.

It still has the 500 mile "break-in" fluid, and has about 175 miles, thus far.

ah. I used Redline for mine - shifts noticeably better.
With apologies to Peter Serio, even his superbly rebuilt shifters cannot match the smoothness of an internal rail shifter. |

Wow! They must have made some changes or improvements, as I bought the "changeover kit" they recommended, and the installation went great. The original "Hurst" shift lever fit, with no modifications, and is as it was prior to the changeover. Used the original crossmember, moved it back& had to drill one hole on each side to accomodate the move. We each have an opinion, but in my case they were easy to work with, and based on "info" I gave them, made recommendations of what I could delete from the changeover package, to save money, and gave me a 10% discount for being a Veteran! A bad experience doesn't usually get a recommendation, and it's sad you had a bad experience. In my case, it was a great experience, and I would certainly recommend them. I am quite happy, but curious about the noise. May just be the break-in fluid, maybe not. Hoping some of the great folks on here, can help.

Hopefully can figure out the source of the noise, get it corrected, change out the fluid, and "hammer down" with the new "tri-power"!

On the SST trans it looks like they mill a opening for the link to pass thru- from the shifter bottom to the internal shift rails. How do they seal up the mod ?
On the OP noise complaint, you need to duplicate the noise on a lift or jackstands and use a mechanics stethescope and listen to components. That could be gear clash in the trans which to a point is normal. John |
