I have a 469 and am using a Performer RPM and an 850 Holley. Makes 580 hp and 590 torque. With a cheap chrome open element air cleaner and it just touches the bottom of the hood. I am going to modify an aftermarket Formula air cleaner to make the scoops functional on my 1976 Formula hood.

My ported '72 HO intake made 558HP/579TQ on my 462. Swapped to a ported HSD and it went 574HP/594 TQ with a 1" spacer. The ported RPM did 571HP/583TQ. I like the hood clearance with the HO intake the best.

I mentioned this in the link I posted. So there is no misunderstanding, the Holley Street Dominator intake, and the testing I mention, in post #20 here was done with an intake modified by Dave Bisschop.
Again, the entrance opening was about 2.300" tall, with some runner blending and plenum work.The Edelbrock cylinder heads in use were about 313 cfm when tested on my engine builder's bench. Also noted, Skip Fix borrowed this HSD intake from me and dynoed his 455 pump gas motor in the 78 TA with it. Tested it against his ported Torker II intake that he spent a LOT of time grinding way up the runners and using a snap gauge to check width and height. The two intakes produced almost identical dyno numbers. .

I thought the Holley Street Dominator needed a lot of work to make power? What's this I've heard about welding two back halves together and doing a bunch of mumbo jumbo to make them work? Do they work with just a port clean up?

I got my intake from jegs. They had a promo at the time. I was going to have ports welded up to match and the one welder guy said he might have problems with China aluminum, so I sent it after I touched up the ports .

Going back to the original post ,500-530 hp can be easily done with a stock iron intake with just a little bit of work. I also ran a T2 and was very pleased with it for a single plane and it fit under the hood nicely.

Lets use my example for the K&N calculator
407 cubic inches at 5700 RPM. I get 111 square inches of filter area required. With a 14" diameter element, that gives a required height of 3.27 inches. I'm currently running a 14" diameter, 3.5" tall element with a (I think) 1/2" drop base. A google search says the top of the vent on a QF 4150 is 2" above the filter mounting surface. So 3.5" filter minus 1/2 drop gives 3". Subtract 2" for the vent height, and I should have about 1" between the top of the vent stacks and the inside of the air cleaner lid. (neglecting the slight dome shape of the lid.) My other filter is a 3". The math shows that the 3" filter would put the lid about 1/2" away from the vents. I would verify the AFR with a meter to see if that impacts the carb metering, before I called that good to go. That's what I plan on doing, since I have to use the 3" filter to fit a 1/2" spacer under the 4150, so I don't hit the GTO hood. The math looks like a 3" filter would be marginal filter area in my application. Not sure how VE or arbitrary RPM chosen affects the filter sizing. My calculated requirements are likely a little overkill. Something to ponder. I do know that the 3" filter and a 3/4"-1" drop base made the engine go into the 9.x for AFR at WOT. Rich piggy. I assume this was due to vent clearance and not an issue with the carb.

To me it depends on the carb..with a Quadrajet use the stock intake..with a Holley use the Torker 2.

My situation...
I use a fiberglass hood that has a factory shaker scoop molded to it and a K&N air filter assembly that goes up inside the scoop when closed. The scoop is open at the rear. For tuning with the installation of my current direct port fuel injection setup we put the car on a chassis dyno. At the end of the session for interest we tested and found my air cleaner assembly cost 17 HP at peak power rpm. 608 HP to the wheels with and 591 HP without. However because of the hood scoop arrangement with a Victor intake and throttle body I cannot run a large air cleaner, it's a K&N 9-inch diameter filter with a X-Stream filter top. In my situation vent clearance is not an issue, and personally for me the loss of hoespower is no big deal. .

I wasn't involved in the chassis dyno session, John in my signature, took the car.
They only did one pull without the filter assembly for interest. No changes were made if they were indicated. With the current throttle body the K&N filter is 2.875" tall. Prior to the direct port fuel injection I was using my custom Holley HP950 carburetor.Still with a short filter and the X-Stream lid. Related, despite the criticism involving the X-Stream filter lid I've been comfortable using one. When I spoke with a K&N tech rep asked about it he supported comments made by some that the entrance on a Holley 'HP' series carb with its smooth contour does in fact act like their Stub Stack and will help it work with the X-Stream lid. Whereas apparently a carb design without a smooth contour (w/ choke tower) and like a Q-jet doesn't work well with a X-Stream lid. I also spoke to the K&N rep about the air flow requirements for my 505 and if the small air cleaner at the time was adequate. According to their formula a 505 cubic inch engine at 6000 rpm requires about 745 cfm of air flow. According to him both my filter and the X-Stream lid together would support about 650 cfm. In his opinion, for street use I was fine. .
