Your comments reminded about the very sucessful Pontiac Super Stock racer John Clegg who stated that a front-facing hood scoop will work as a ram air source only if the car in question is doing 200 mph. That said, at one time he used a small Harwood scoop mounted backwards on the hood of his 8-second former record holding Firebird. I was stunned at how effective the TA scoop is when I had parked under our bald cypress tree last fall and some of the fronds fell on the car. I got all of them off the hood before driving, but there were still some in the wiper arms and the HVAC grills in the hood. At about 30 miles an hour, the rest of them literally blew right up into the scoop. Thankfully I have the perforated insert in the scoop that caught it all, but I had to pull over to clean them off.

John Clegg's Harwood scoop was mounted so the rear opening appeared to be a bit closer to the rear of the hood than the conventional location of the factory shaker scoop opening. Thus closer to the windshield. He tapped some cloth onto the top of the back of the scoop and made some passes, and observed that the cloth bent into the scoop opening at speed, confirming his theory that the air traveled into it. Side note- He sealed the carburetor to the scoop, but used the Pontiac's front grille as an air source, and the air from there leads directly into the carb pan. That way the carburetor is isolated from the contaminated air around the motor. .

Your event with the TA scoop shows how even when the motor is achieving only zero psi at the carb you can have some 14.7 psi pushing air and debris into the thing.

You mentioned that this will be a street cruiser / bruiser and driven to car shows. Not sure of what intake would be ideal, but I would focus on an intake that has great bottom and mid power/torque. That’s where the fun will be to be able to drive it routinely. I went down the rabbit hole of building a motor for max power and it was not ideal/fun for the street.
If running an automatic, make sure to get the right torque converter as well that works well for your needs. Good luck and looking forward to hearing how it turns out. |

what cam-heads? the forum members will come up with a HP/TORQUE number for us. JLM has the under-hood setup figured out. Ask him what air cleaner he used and then use any manifold you have that has the same height as the torker2. I agree with Gary H. None your manifolds will make your seat of the pants dyno feel any different. I just read an air cleaner article from 2002 Hot Rod. Marlan tested 7 different air cleaners on a 520 HP engine. The HP spread was 518-522. The drop base with a 2-1/2" filter made 522.

Ken mentions air filters. Maybe a bit off topic but some might find this of interest....
A very long time ago I had a 'experimental' Edelbrock cylinder head that was tested on David Vizard's flow bench. I had the opportunity to have lunch with him then and found not only a nice fellow but pretty darn smart. It was at that time I learned a bit about the K&N filters. Take a few minites to watch this video starting at about 4.24 thru about 14.00 I believe what you hear will be very interesting. Much more than they get more efficient when they get dirty ! I've seen similar combos run in the 475-515 HP range. I have the same comp lobes in my 462 with 112 lsa and 108 isl.

For only 500 HP the stock intakes will suffice. I've done 455's in that hp range with stock unported factory intakes.
In fact the last one I did was with an aluminum RA IV/HO unported and it made 507hp/571tq on pump gas with a small hydraulic roller. Nice thing about them is everything bolts on like it should and they fit under any stock hood. |

I will agree 500 HP is about the limit for a stock intake. My first ported E head 455 259/264 SR I kept the HO intake until I found an extra Shaker base to "massage" for a Holley/Demon. After I found one swapping a Demon with an adapter for the worked Qjet at the track picked up 0.3 seconds. Swapped a Torker II on idled smoother and with jetting the car ran 10.90@123 in good air, 6.9 1/8 at 99 weighing 3750.

Yeah if I were really chasing power numbers I'd go with a good single plane every time, especially on a bigger inch motor. With Pontiacs and the 4.210-4.250 cranks they have absolutely no trouble making torque so sacrificing a pinch of that with a single plane really isn't a big deal anyway.

I'm hoping to reach the 500hp range. I'm going to use the street Dominator intake. It will be match ported with some Plenum work at 10.53 to1.

If you are using a factory manifold without modifications it's going to have a hard time keeping up with some aftermarket manifolds on a true 500 horsepower build.

Truth! I can be done with a factory intake, but it'll take some work. And you're still limited to a spread bore style carburetor with the factory intake, unless you run an adapter, which I'm not a fan of.
