Default Two More Engines Dyno Tested - Pleasing Results

Hello PY'ers.

I had a good week testing two of my engines on the dyno. One is for myself to install in a 1974 Formula 455, the other is for my friend for his 1964 Tri-Power 4 speed GTO. Thought to share the information for the enthusiasts and builders out there.

Formula engine..

455 based (465 ci) 485428 block. .040 over. 24.5 CC dish Butler/Ross pistons. Eagle 6.625 rods. 103 Crank. Dan Barton 70 CC early RP Edelbrocks 2.200/1.650 valves. 10.2:1 CR. Old Faithful V1 cam. HS 1.65 rockers. Comp 857 HR lifters. Port matched KRE Northwind, BG 850 downleg Mighty Demon, Hooker 4202. 91 octane. 600HP at 5800 and 590 TQ at 4900-5000.

GTO engine..

455 based (467 ci). 485428 block. .030 over. 6cc relief Butler/Ross pistons. Eagle 6.800 rods. Eagle cast steel 4.250 Crank. My hand ported 87 CC RP Edelbrocks 2.110/1.660 valves. 10.4:1 CR. Butler HR 230/236 112 LSA cam. Scorpion 1.65 endurance rockers. Lunati (Morel) HR lifters. KRE Trade-Wind w/ 3 2BBL Holleys. Hooker 4202. 91 octane. 545 HP at 5600-5700 and 550 TQ at 4300.

I think they turned out great, ran like champions with no leaks or issues to speak of. Lots of interesting discoveries along the way as always. Ask away if any interest.

Last attachment shows overlay of the 4 engines tested over the last year. All of them turned out really well, and shows how easy it is to make respectable power out of this venerable engine.

Very nice engines and results. Excellent torque numbers and the power is where it can be used all the time in a street car. First results I have seen on the KRE intake with tri-power.

Thank you sir! The Trade-Wind is a cool part that backs up it's looks with performance.

Very nice results. I have added them both to the Pontiac N/A Pump Gas List in the Dyno Engine Section

Very nice Travis. The Formula engine did a bit better than my KRE D port heads. I run the Torker 2 with road paver 246/252 with 1.5 Rockers. 589 hp/600 T. I'm running Crower solid rollers on that cam.

Thanks Charles, and good to see how fast you all are running now with the '68!

Great results.

What do you think the heads flowed on the 465?

Good question! 336 at .500 and flat from there on up. That flow level at a moderate valve lift without a gigantic port all add up.

The bigger intake valve (2.200), and the port work/valve job, contributed to the extra power output I am sure vs. the engines I had tested earlier. There were many great takeaways from these builds.

what do think the numbers would be on the 455 built for the GTO if run through ram air exhaust vs headers?

Hi Tom.

I would say down around 30 HP. And for the average guy driving it around you would never know the difference. Assuming an aftermarket RA exhaust casting with the big exit.

Just my guess. Of equal importance is the exhaust system behind the manifold or header.

We drive these things.
