Default 76X9 block

I am currently on the hunt for a 64 76x9 block. I'm sure there are some experts on here. The manifest is stamped May 12, 1964 and in some documentation I have found says it was built second week of May. The production date in the upper left hand corner says 05 28. I'm having trouble making light of this. What would the actual production date be? What date code should the block be? It has a 65 76x block in it now. I have the original rear that's going back in next year and wanted to make the car period correct. Thank you for any help!

Didn’t the factory go to the two letter code instead of the alpha-numeric in 65? So any 76X would be 64 (or earlier if it was a code used before).

My mistake. The 1964 block at Franks’s was a 78X block, not a 76x.

Do you have the PHS? The manifest lists the engine in boxes 75 & 76. If you don't have PHS documentation, get it. What is the date stamp in the upper left of the cowl data plate? S/b 05B, May 2nd week.

Yes it is 05B. So would I be looking for a date code of late March/early April or so?

No such thing as a 65 76x block. The only plausible explanation (I can think) might be it is a warranty replacement in 65 and the tech stamped 76x to replicate the original block. If that is the case, I'd probably leave it in the car and call it next best thing to the original.

Some plants put the EUN on the manifest. Is there any chance the block is actually a 64 76x, it could be original? 05B would indicate the body was built in the fisher body plant second week of May. Production Date I think you are referring to Invoice Date which is the date the car was invoiced to the dealer when it was completed and this in most circumstances happened within 1 to 2 days the (completed) car actually rolled off the assembly line. I'd presume you want a date block 2-3 weeks prior to the invoice date but I'm not 100% versed in that time frame on 64s. Also depended on what plant car was built. You'd want to find a similar examples of original cars to reference if you're trying to be as accurate as possible.

76x blocks are rather difficult to find. Good luck in your search!

OK, the car was built the 2nd wk of May. What does the manifest list in boxes 75 &76? What are the numbers cast in the block near distributor? S/b 977.... & date code like C164. What is stamped on the block on the right (passenger) front side just below the head? Pics of all of this would be most helpful!

That would be the engine code 76 for 389 Manual tripower engine

What's the code in Box 77?

What's the code in Box 77?

The number 9. The block code on the front is 76XW with the number 358808 under it. Date code looks like K185. I cant get good pics the car is on the lift. Bock number back there is 977878 think 9 at the end.

Very interesting engine!

I'd say it was a replacement short block for a 64 GTO? car.
I think that a dealer would/should stamp the replacement engine with the original EUN/code?

That engine is actually a Nov 1965 block which they were probably making engines for 1966 model year.

Looks like that eun would be around a 03D car in 1964.

Your car a Fremont or Pontiac built GTO?

On the BHC (if Fremont/Pontiac), to the left of the VIN is the engine code and a set of numbers.
What are those numbers?

Or post the BHC if you want.
