I have AC, a Borgeson PS box, and of course hydroboost with a Saginaw pump. I’m thinking my only hope is serpentine.

How many amps is your alternator?

Which Bergeson steering box, the 800130 one? The earlier ones (600/700) varied on GPM & PSI requirements. (ask me how I know...)

https://www.borgeson.com/Borgeson-St...7-1-Ratio.html

"Maximum Pressure: 1450 PSI Maximum Operating Pressure, 1100-1250 Optimal

Flow Rate: 2.5-3.0 GPM Flow Rate Recommended"

CVF doesn't offer pumps, do you recall where you got your pump or have a part number?

Tuff Stuff pumps are 1200 psi/3 GPM, which would work. But they offer a range of pumps, some are only 850 psi.

Bergeson offers a pump for GM Hydroboost systems, which is in the "1450-1550 PSI with a 3.0-3.5 GPM Flow Rate" :

https://www.borgeson.com/p-s-pump-fo....0%2D3.5%20GPM

"GM Hydroboost systems generally require a power steering pump that delivers 1,200 to 1,600 PSI and a flow rate of 2.5 to 3.5 gallons per minute (GPM). While standard factory pumps often operate around 1,200 PSI, high-performance or heavy-duty setups may use pressures up to 1,800 PSI, though excessive pressure can reduce steering performance, making 1,300–1,500 PSI a common sweet spot."

Not sure I agree with that statement but low psi can load the pump. If it were very low, the pedal would be noticeably hard though.

Just putting the info out there for awareness, it's always good to do your' own homework.

For the hyrdoboost, I agree 100 percent to not wing it, as for most things. I did consider grabbing one out of a scrap yard since many have successfully done this. I opted for a designed unit for my second gen to reduce potential problems. I have enough hassles with aftermarket mods so I avoid them as best I can (not always successfully LOL). With it I use a Wilwood master cylinder kit and proportioning valve. I use a one and one-eight boret. I am using my original OEM Saginaw power steering pump (now 50 years old. WOW) which I learned while planning the install was type one and was a go for the unit. Came with a mounting block that flawlessly bolted into the existing firewall mountings. Eight years and all good.

CVF does sell power steering pumps. You can get either style. My alternator is 105 AMP

So all the (800-850 psi) psi reducing valves are for rack & pinion apps, the Type II ones they have are not for their' GM kits:

"Requires GM Type II Pump with Plastic Reservoir. GM Type II Pumps meant for remote reservoirs will NOT work.
Not recommended for GM applications due to interference with the gear box. We recommend remote reservoirs for all of these applications. "

External reservoir only for GM setups.

The integrated reservoirs foam, garbage.

The external ones they have are not anti-foam/separator type, so not really good either.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't come up with a combo that would work with a Sag pump and hydroboost, unless you get the specific Bergeson pump AND steering box.

Most people cobble a hydroboost setup together and just 'live with it'. That's why many say the hydroboost stuff is a fully engineered system box-pump everything. The 'conversion' offerings don't take the end-to-end system into consideration.

Turn One matches pump-box, and if you call them, they will insert a hydroboost into it but there's a reason it's not cheap. Sag/Type II are diff systems, you have to match it all.

Why do people insist on rebuilding their' original boxes? Valving & matching the pump. They gave up on rebuilt chit because they toss whatever valve etc into the parts.

Jeep boxes? They use Type II pumps OE, so again, it ain't right.

Yeah, it's better than the wore out stuff they had, but it ain't right.

Sorry, rambling, just do the homework, you will see what I mean...

Just my $.02 but at this point I’d go back to stock pulleys and brackets. Have them powder coated if you are going to miss the bling.

Here's a pic of my Type II pump, 600 series box (which is smaller than the 700/800 series), Billet Specialties serp setup, and external reservoir.

Look how close everything is.

The only other way to do it is to mount the reservoir on the inner fender well or somewhere. It's tight there. And almost no way you can use rubber, pre-formed hoses, just not enough room.

I guess if I worked on it more I might be able to do something better, and still need to put the Lee reservoir on there, but there still isn't much room.

Best thing to do if you want to go back stock is to do the RARE full pulley setup, and use an 11 bolt cover. That's the best you can do with a V belt setup. And you are limited to a 140a alt. Toss a hydroboost in there and the load increase, and you are back to square one.

No coating, blasting, sanding, etc on OE pulleys is going to work, just make it worse. No spray no 'better belts' nothing, it's all exceeding the original design, which was marginal at best straight of the assembly line. Those times used 60-80a alts, and it was still a struggle to get the belts to grab.

Tighten the belt to get more grab and cook the alt and/or water pump bearings. It's a roller coaster.

I’m gonna switch to a serpentine system this summer. Hydroboost power steering Saginaw pumps are readily available but all it is is a nipple on the back of the reservoir for an extra return. The hydroboost kit I bought accomplished that with a T fitting. I have an 11 bolt cover now. I would love to go to stock brackets but I have a sanden AC compressor

High amp alternators will only cause belt slip if there is a high amp draw, so should be easy to isolate. Plus I believe Dave has a 105 amp - that said, seems the basic replacement alternators all have pulleys that don’t quite fit the 15 series fan belts. On my cars they all look like the picture Dave posted.

I agree with post 69 fully, you got too much BS going on, and frankly I think a lot of us are tired of hearing about this .

I don’t know, solving this issue publicly may assist others in a similar situation.

I'm still curious what the idle vacuum is.

As I recall, cam is on the mild side, it should have plenty of vacuum for brakes.

The March Ultra kit is really just a conversion to wide belts, it's not one continuous belt, so it's not really a 'serpentine' conversion.

https://marchperformance.com/pontiac...ne-conversion/

The Pontiac one is on sale right now for $702. That's just a hair over a set of RARE pulleys.

I have one like that on the 442, major improvement over factory, it was $795 with the A/C setup and everything powder coated black. (I supplied Alt, PS pump, and AC compressor).

We have all dealt with belt squeal and you just have to sort these things out. Nothing more or less to it really. My advice would be work through the issues not abandon ship at first sign of trouble which is also causing member fatigue.
