In Texas we have antique and classic plates for car 25+ years old, but they differ primarily in usage and inspection requirements. Antique plates ($50, 5-year) are for exhibition/club use, restricting daily driving but waiving annual inspections. Classic plates allow regular, daily driving but require annual safety inspections and standard registration fees.

Texas law has changed. Vehicles registered as "Classic" have no annual safety inspection.

Personally I have mine registered as "Antique". A nice thing with this is only one plate is issued for the rear only. Besides the 5-years they are good for its nice to have no front plate on a Trans Am nose piece !
As far as limited driving, the chances of it being inforced is nill presuming your not driving like a mad man

Actually old news that some misguided liberal representative was going to TRY and get this passed.

Common sense prevailed and the bill has been tabled at least for this year.

I wrote the appropriate legislators several weeks ago to provide my input, and apparently they listened to me and the thousands of others (the attempted legislation was well known to car clubs, the Minnesota Street Rod Association in particular, and they promoted the prime contacts to write).

The Twin Cities is very liberal and another legislator is trying to prevent the use of ATV's, snowmobiles on any trails that come within 200 feet of water. Funny thing, the DNR has built thousands of miles of trails in northern MN where the trails literally cross lakes, rivers and streams.

The way MN likes to tax things, they need to realize how much revenue both old cars and ATV's/snowmobiles bring into the state. The Back to the 50's Car Show in June brings 12,000+ cars from all over the country in June. The ATV trails are used by tourists year round and snowmobiles love the reliable snow, the extensive trail network and the many resorts and bars that need the tourism income to survive.

If either of these to bills were to ultimately pass, the next thing would be to ban motors on all boats in MN (they already ban motors in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area)...

In the southern half of the state that is true. I live in Rochester and the previous two winters I was able to golf every month of the year. This year I missed December, January and February - but we really didn't get all that much snow.

However, my brother still lives in northern MN where we grew up. There is plenty of snow up there in the resort areas.

So get regular plates, if any type of law like this passes.

I’d be more worried about getting insurance that is both agreed value and unlimited mileage.

Here it is the other way around, you must have insurance and once you have liability covered, you can take your pink card to the registration offices and get any type of plate you want.

I had my GTO and Camaro insured with Hagerty in WI with regular plates (the WI collector plates are ugly). When I moved to MN I went with the lifetime collector plates and use Year of Manufacture plates (I had to find a vintage pair of plates for each car of the correct year, but only have to display a rear plate).

Hagerty also covers the '09 Solstice which isn't even old enough to qualify for collector plates yet.

The key is, we have to have other vehicles on regular insurance for our daily drivers.

For our daily drivers (a 2022 and a 2024) I paid almost $1200 combined last year.

I have my '21 Challenger Scat Pack insured through Hagerty... but they won't insure my '25 GMC Sierra 1500.

I have no problem with restricting the use of specialty and antique vehicles. It seems only logical a specialty plated vehicle should have restricted use.

However, limited usage should have only annual mileage restrictions and require a verified annual mileage audit or statement from a state-certified agency much like an emissions test.

You want unrestricted use of your car? Get full-use passenger car plates and pay full insurance rates too.
