So, just a stock 8.5" open rear? No specific gear ratio? No posi, correct?

I believe you will need to shorten your driveshaft about one inch.

I may also have a driveshaft, depending on the transmission.

Have an A body from 71-72 Buick. This is an 8.5 with non tapered axles. Bought 15 of them from a wrecking yard in OK panhandle years ago. Takes all 8.5 parts.

Have '73-77 8.5 A-body bolt-in axle core rears in the racks.. Have built up a couple dozen of the '73-77 A-body style. most did not come with good gear ratios & a posi. Not a fan of the c-clip axle version
of the '73-77 A-body rear, though may have a housing in the racks.. Original 28 spline "S spring" posi's typically show wear to the clutches, & some units have side gears w spalling (pitting).
Going back 30 years, I always replaced the clutches & properly shimmed up the side gears. Not easy to do with limited avail of correct clutch side shims.
The clutches have been reproduced for the last twenty years, but they are expensive. Just something to factor in if you stumble into what will typically be an expensive core to have gone through.
