Im convinced I have a box of 1964 Galaxie spare parts lying around. Yet I cant find them. Then I have vague memories of maybe selling that whole box to a guy on marketplace? Am I inventing that memory?

I'm 51, and have been losing parts for decades. Yet, I still have enough that I can't remember everything I still have. I'm probably going to have enough leftovers to build a second C10, and I've only had the truck for 2 years. I'm still torn on selling my 53 F100 that I haven't even gotten to yet, but still have thousands of dollars worth of parts sitting around for. I also try not to think about how much money I've laid out for all this stuff, if I added it up. Between cars and guns, I'm sure a drug addiction would have been cheaper.

I set up a video camera whenever I am in my shop. When I mislay a tool or part I just view the video instead of spending 30 minutes looking! My wife helped me assemble a Polywood swing yesterday. A total of 12 screws and 4 eye bolts. I immediately lost one of the screws but my wife found it about 5 feet away. Then I was down to the last two screws for the back, but one was pointy as it should be and the other one was blunt tipped so I had to take the side screws out to see if I had used one of the pointy ones where a blunt was supposed to go. I had a 1 in 4 chance of finding it and I did, on the fourth one!

I’ve said this on here before in other threads. But it’s a lifelong head scratcher for me.

I’ve been both an aircraft mechanic and high level electronics technician in my life. Impeccable tool control. Give me a structured workplace, shadowed tool box, and maybe most importantly, consequences if you don’t follow said tool control rules. I will leave every day with all my stuff back in place.

But in my home garage without the guide rails I’m completely incapable of the same behavior. Filming for my YT channel has made it worse.

I saw a meme recently that said “Turns out if you just get good grades in school and don’t make your personally issues other people’s problems…….they will just let you raw dog ADHD you’re whole life”

I’ve more and more come to believe I fit neatly into that category.

I rarely lose things (drop them, yes, but not lose them).

Recently, I needed my 6 inch knife file. It was not where it should have been; nor was it anywhere I looked.

Started calling local suppliers of tools (2 auto parts store, 2 hardware stores, 4 chain discount stores). Not a single employee of the local stores knew what I was talking about !

Looked at dozens on ebay, none of which were correctly advertised.

Finally found them at McMaster-Carr; 1 rough cut, 1 finish cut with shipping $55. Plus 2 afternoons of looking !

So don't lose your knife file !

I buy those cheap magnets from Harbor Freight. They are strong enough to hold small tools and hardware. Now I lose those all the time �� I also have two of those expensive Streamlite flash lights and the key to not losing those is to leave them on all the time your working! I have spare batteries. I was recently chasing an issue with my Jeep running bad and thought well it can't be the throttle position sensor or the idle control valve I just replaced those. When I looked up the history on those parts I had replaced them FIVE years ago. Oops....
