Been in this game for 50 years now..
If it were mine....it's single stage ..all day ..every day. Especially with black...you can just paint that panel ..if Some damage should arise Put 4 coats on it...and you can cut and buff it... SS black ..blows away B/C with Clear Black.. Just my 2'cents And if I ever refinish my 67 GTO ..Monteago Cream... It will be single stage too |

I just painted these two trucks with single stage. With aftermarket clear it’s not a matter of if, but when it starts to peel if it’s not garage kept.

I've had all 3 types of paint jobs, lacquer, base/clear, and single stage.
I agree, nothing looks like what lacquer does, but a lot of people won't use it anymore. The T/A had a lacquer job done in the early 80s, and lasted with no issues for over 10 years. I had it painted basically just to change colors, and then painted again 1.5 years ago. The 442 is black, and painter insisted on SPI single stage, and it turned out fantastic. That was done as a 'scuff & spray' and the blemishes it has is from lack of good prep, but still looks great. The GTO and now the T/A, both are base/clear. The GTO wish I would have gone single stage, but it is what it is. The T/A was sprayed base/clear because of the specific color I wanted was only available from PPG due to the mica used, and is a limited Jag color. Not cheap ($1900 gal), but it was well worth it. .

General rule of thumb:
Non metallic = single stage Metallic = base/clear |

Man this great just soaking in all the discussions! I'll do single stage, final answer.
For me I would prefer the look of basic lacquer, not because of the deep gloss you can get but because of the nice tight orange peel. This is a restoration and I prefer the original look but the problem with modern lacquer is that it's just so fragile. I had my NCRS inspired Corvette painted PPG lacquer a while ago now and spilt a very small amount of gas near the filler just last summer. I didn't notice until the next day when I noticed a dull trickle mark. After all the panic left I decided to try and polish it out and as luck would have it, the shine came back. Unfortunately if you look at it just the right way, you can still see the damage that the gas did... Anyways, this Judge will be getting black single stage. |

I would chose SPI
I would also cut and buff SPI suggests mixing clear in the last color coat if thats what look you want

A '29 Chrysler rumble seat roadster. Not mine, belongs to a member in my club, stock restoration. Black fenders with a soon to be dark maroon body. During this period of Canadian smoke, we're indoors sewing a cream/tan interior.
