This is a very true statement........ I agree wholeheartedly.

Perhaps, but certainly not distinctive as a GTO. Mitsubishi and many others are now sporting a similar split grill.

I still don't see the resemblance, I don't know why you guys keep making yourselves believe that it looks like a Grand Am or a Grand Prix, when I see a Grand Am I know its a Grand Am, when I see the new generation of Grand Prix(2004+) I sure as hell know its a Grand Prix, and when I see a G6 I know its a G6. I havent seen a GTO because they dont have them in Canada, but I'm pretty sure I'd know one if I had the oppurtunity to see one with my own two eyes.

Because it does.

Isn't it kind of normal that a Pontiac looks like a Pontiac? I agree the GTO should stand out more, but to make it so it doesnt look like a Pontiac, I don't think so. IMO owning a Pontiac is something "special", and if people look at my dad's 04 GTP and know its a Pontiac, then good, thats how it should be. I don't care what others have to say, I'm man and old enough to have an opinion on my own I don't need to be brain washed by what others think of this car, or what some guy from GM has to say either.

As am I. I wasn't brainwashed into disliking the looks of this car. I didn't like the looks of it when I logged onto the Pontiac website after seeing it on a TV commercial. All they showed in the commercial was the headlights. That actually looked cool. When I saw the rest of the car, it was very disappointing. I, like many others, were expecting much more than a fleet look so common among most manufacturers. As far as what GM execs say about it: I was proving a point using their own words that they put little or no thought into the styling of this car. Some people like the looks of this car, others don't. Neither is right or wrong. It's a matter of personal choice. As for me, I think it makes a great modern day musclecar but a lousy GTO.

Strong performance from the '04-'05 GTO is very respectable - but is not enough to excite the public at large. Why? Because strong performance is commonplace today. Most new cars - even the mundane ones - can outperform many of the classic cars we so admire. Even if the new GTO is near the top of its class, it doesn't have the heritage styling cues that most people expect when the legendary GTO name is placed on the car.
Comparing the new GTO performance to that of the classic GTO is pointless. The classic GTO was a performance package with styling mods that was enough to distiguish the brand from the rest of the 1960s automotive landscape. You also can't ignore the marketing that took advantage of the youth oriented trends happening at the time. [note the parallel to the current tuner phenomenon for today's youth market].
Marketing a new muscle car today is a totally different animal. Strong performance is important, but it's also expected. Now, more is needed to ignite excitement around the brand. Styling is an important feature. The new GTOs are not un-attractive. They have clean shape, and carry-on the current Pontiac familial look. They don't however envoke any styling reminecient of the classic GTOs. There is a total disconnect from a styling perspective. Reaction from the automotive pundits and contributors to this forum lament this missed opportunity to leverage the GTO styling heritage to help make the new GTOs an unqualified success. Ford seems to have tapped into this formula with their new interpretation of the Mustang. There is no mistaking what it is.
Of course the new Mustangs, Corvettes [even Firebirds and Camaros until the end] have had the benefit of an un-interupted lineage to help with the evolution and brand identification. Even more reason that Pontiac needed to make more of an effort to help the buying public connect the dots when introducing a brand name with historic cache. Again Ford did this when they introduced the new T-Bird, which created tremendous excitement when it was released.
Now some will argue that Chrysler didn't really connect the styling dots with the new 300C compared to the vintage 300s. Its success seems to blow my arguement out of the water. While I agree they share little from a styling perspective, The vintage 300s are not nearly as well known to the public so there is much less expectation. Also the new 300C is daring in its own right - breaking new ground from a styling perspective, and sets its own trend. Also, Chrysler is cashing in on its "HEMI" heritage in a big way.
In that respect, I'd rather the GTO moniker be associated with a Pontiac that breaks new styling ground if it's not going to harken back to its heritage. How about a two-door G6 or Solstice with GTO performance...

Ditto.....Well said. While many cars had stacked headlights, split grills, a "wide stance" etc, those characteristics were uniquely associated (bold print was for Champs sake) with the GTO. A modern day GTO with retro cues would serve to connect to that uniqueness rather than alienate it. Such a alienation only results in a commonality among the masses.

I believe the key word there was "when" not now. The T-bird was and is a "cute" car...not that many people these days in this performance driven environment want a cute car. Perhaps if GM did something like this ( pictured ) with the GTO then Pontaic would live up to it's credo: "We build excitment":

Well stated ! Excellent and well supported points.
I'm not happy with the styling of the new GTO, but I do enjoy driving mine.

No! The key word was "exitement". The New Bird never sold close to Ford's original projection, in fact unlike the '04 GTO, the T-Bird sold less than half of expected volume!

How much did Ford discount it? Or did they? People expected a cute car when the T-Bird came out. Those that wanted a cute car bought one. There aren't that many people wanting a cute car these days. Lots of people still want musclecars. People expected an in-your-face GTO when the GM Monaro was released. Many are still waiting. Thus deeply discounted 04s and production #'s cut back on the 05.

My comments about the new T-Bird was not intended to claim an overall success of the car for Ford, but rather to point out how its heritage styling helped create excitement for its introduction. What Ford has done with it since is outside the scope of my original post.

You guys are mixing your message here! Ford created exitement by 'introducing' a new T-Bird. When the car actually hit the showroom, it was ignored and quickly forgotten!
The car didn't generate exitement, the idea of the car did, big difference!

I don't think there was as much anticipation or demand for a new T-Bird as there was a GTO. When Ford came up with the idea of a new T-Bird a few people thought "Why not?" In relation to the GTO, for 30 years GM had been petitioned with "You Must!"....and they blew it.

It's easy to deduce from your posts. Your view on the subject is even more closed minded than Whatza70goat's ( ), which is saying something. I know for a fact that the new GTO has a better stock sound system than a '69, because I have heard both. It is also as good or better than most current stock systems. I also know that if you drive a '69 GTO as a driver that you aren't driving it very far, or leaving it unattended very long, unless you're an idiot. A 69 is not an easy car to replace. If the 2004 is stolen, I call my insurance co, and order an '05.
FWIW, I drive my '04 185 miles, each way, to work every week, and leave it unattended in an airport parking lot for 3-4 days at a time. Anybody that would use an old GTO for that purpose needs a serious head exam. The new one is perfect for the purpose. It's fun to drive, get's good economy, is comfortable, quiet, passes with aplomb and is pretty stealthy, especially compared to my old Formula, which was a cop/ricer/rustang magnet.......

quote:
no looks arent the most important. its the performance that is.

Which is precisely why I bought a new GTO, in spite of it's looks. It performs better, in just about every way, than an old one (remember, I have had both), not to mention most other new cars on the road.

quote:
you guys are making this car sound like its the best looking fastest, best handling car made.

No, we are simply giving credit, where credit's due. It is, overall, a GREAT car, well worthy of the GTO nameplate it wears. I can say that after actually owning and driving it. It would be nice if it were more retro styled, like the new Mustang (which is a great _looking_ car. I still wouldn't buy one since I am not comfortable in them for more than 5 minutes)

quote:
to prove a point i told you guys about 4/6 banger imports that will beat it or at least hang right with the new GTO for the same price if not cheaper.

Actually, I am still waiting for you to name one.

quote:
then you come back with excuses like oh its AWD it can handle better. you think? maybe thats why it is AWD. or it has boost. yeah and it needs a lot of it. or you wouldnt drive it. i would considering it does everything (1/4,handle,accelerate better then the gto) since thats what its all about.if you guys want to compare cars for what they can do (1/4 mile times,skidpad,0-60) and find another car that will do what the new GTO can do or do it better dont get pissed.

Name one car that will outperform the new GTO, that is in the same class (both $$$ and performance wise). There aren't any. I am not pissed, I am VERY happy with my new GTO. Driving a FWD (or AWD for that matter), 4 banger sh!tbox, no matter how well it "performs", is not exciting to me in the least. At least until you start hydroplaning, the FWD becomes REAL exciting, but not in a good way........

quote:
i would too if i spent $35,000 on a badge.

I spent considerably less than that on my '04, and considerably more on my '66.

quote:
what are you gonna do if some kid pulls up to you at a stoplight and wants to run em? say no all i race is RWD imports in the same price range. now who was talking about common sense? and stating the obvios?

First of all, I'll say no because I have way too muc common sense and self esteem to street race. I also have WAAAAY too much to lose and nothing whatsoever to gain. I am a 40 y.o. professional, with a house, wife and kids. What incentive is there for me to beat a 17 y.o. in a Civic? In the risk/reward equation, there is very little reward.
Second of all, there are very few 13 second anythings running around on the street, regardless of what you think, so there is little point in it.
I know that it will beat most cars on the road (even if it looks like them), and that some will beat it. So what? None have the whole package that the GTO has (unless you get into the higher end, MUCH more expensive Beamers/AMG Benzs).
I've got news for you, there are a lot of cars running around that will spank your '69. Bad. No matter how fast your car is, there is _always_ something faster. Judging from your other posts on the subject, I'd be surprised if yours breaks 14s the way it sits now. Should you sell it and buy something else? Should you not like it because of this fact? Should I criticize your car because BOTH of my GTOs will probably spank yours? My answer is no. A '69 Judge (even a clone) is a VERY cool car, (it's my 2nd favorite GTO, in fact.....66 is the first). It just serves a different purpose than a new one. FWIW, it seems that you are a younger guy, and if so, I applaud your choice of a '69 Goat, rather than a newer car. I had a '77 GP in HS and early college, as well as a '66 GTO, '69 GP and a few others, so I can relate.
If I could only afford 1 GTO right now, I would choose the 2004, because I need a reliable car for my commute. Fortunately, I don't have to choose, so I have a nice daily driver AND a really cool weekend cruiser.

ill name the big 2 imports for ya that are in the same price range ($35,000) that can out perform or at least hang with the GTO
1. EVO VIII
2.WRX STI
plus you can pick up a srt 4 for $20,000 thats not as fast but that gives you $15,000 to play with.
i dont understand why people buy "sports" cars and dont use them for whats intended. its like the old guy driving a new vette 30 in the slow lane. ( thats why i said if i was going to buy a car to roll in it would be a older car like a 30's-40's model. or id send the $35,000 and get a somewhat luxury car. if someone wants to run em from light to light bring it. hell every time i got pulled over i get out of it AND bs with the cop(s) for 5-10 mins because what the car is. it gets a lot fo attetion and i like it. it turns heads. i get comments when i stop for gas or if im parked next to someone at the store.im sure it would be nice to have EFI and no wait for the car to warm up before you can get on it. but i like my 428 better. yeah im 22 so that makes me younger. theres a lot of 13 sec cars around here. yeah theres a lot that will spank my car. but i have to drive it everyday so no big cam/gears/converter. thats why im setting up my car to be a low 12/high 11 street/strip car. and by street i dont mean on a trailer. theyre set up for a race only 11/10's weekend toy. slight diffrence here.

Hey,I just answered one of your questions. I twisted nothing. Or, are you trying to say that all your questions are rhetorical? Are you threating me personally now ?

quote:
ill name the big 2 imports for ya that are in the same price range ($35,000) that can out perform or at least hang with the GTO
1. EVO VIII
2.WRX STI
plus you can pick up a srt 4 for $20,000 thats not as fast but that gives you $15,000 to play with.

Aren't those FWD riceburners? Sorry, not into them, no matter HOW fast they are....... Plus, I thought looks were important?
If I spent $35K on one of those, I WOULD be pissed, every time I got into it, knowing I could have had a real car, with a manual, correct wheel drive, and a whole engine, for less money......

quote:
i dont understand why people buy "sports" cars and dont use them for whats intended.

So, I shouldn't have a fast car, because I don't street race? Why not have it all? A comfortable, good looking FAST car. There is a lot more to life than street racing (like court, jail, fines, no license, hospitals etc....), as you will likely find out as they are towing your car away, or worse.

quote:
its like the old guy driving a new vette 30 in the slow lane. ( thats why i said if i was going to buy a car to roll in it would be a older car like a 30's-40's model. or id send the $35,000 and get a somewhat luxury car.

Hmm..... I'm an old guy, and certainly don't drive slow, or go "rolling", so I spent $26K and got a semi luxury car that is fast.

quote:
if someone wants to run em from light to light bring it.

You'll learn.......

quote:
hell every time i got pulled over i get out of it AND bs with the cop(s) for 5-10 mins because what the car is.

I am sure you do. When I am driving to work, I don't really have the inclination or time to BS with a cop about my car. If/when I get pulled over (hasn't happened with the new GTO yet), I want the interlude over as quickly as possible. I don't generally drive in a way that I am likely to get tickets (13 years and counting), but I do get pulled every so often due to where/when I drive. I do not drive slow in places where there is little chance of getting caught, but I do drive within 10mph of the limit in places where there are likely to be cops, since it is highly unlikely that I will get a ticket going less than 10 over, and that was proven a few times in the Formula. With the GTO, I probably won't even gret pulled over in the first place.

quote:
it gets a lot fo attetion and i like it. it turns heads. i get comments when i stop for gas or if im parked next to someone at the store.

Funny, but in those situations, the '04 gets attention too. Much more than I though it would. People are always coming up and asking about the car, how I like it etc, and have only heard a few negative comments.

quote:
im sure it would be nice to have EFI and no wait for the car to warm up before you can get on it. but i like my 428 better.

I can guarantee that if you had half the drive I do, that you'd HATE the 428, for a variety of reasons.....

quote:
yeah im 22 so that makes me younger. theres a lot of 13 sec cars around here.

LOL....... Yup, there were lots of 11-12 second cars around when I was growing up too..... It's amazing how many 11 second Camaros my 14 second GTO wiped up.

quote:
yeah theres a lot that will spank my car. but i have to drive it everyday so no big cam/gears/converter. thats why im setting up my car to be a low 12/high 11 street/strip car. and by street i dont mean on a trailer. theyre set up for a race only 11/10's weekend toy. slight diffrence here.

I think you just contradicted yourself........
