Ok....Let's play a game. Since I have received so much help and input from the guys on the forum...let's have some fun! My motor arrived at Paul's shop today. I just ordered this 12 inch aluminum Pontiac sign on eBay. The first forum member to correctly guess what the problem was with the motor will receive this sign for free. I'll pay the shipping!
Because of this thread, I have met some good friends and I've learned a lot about cars. I can't tell you enough how great Jeff and Paul have been. I wouldn't hesitate to have Paul do another motor for me. He is a true professional. Post your guess! |

Don't think so, his guess of a bent oil pump shaft wasn't the issue. It was actually the distributor moving the shaft. My guess along with Dataway should have gotten the OP in the right area and the problem discovered.
Looks like we'll have to cut that sign in half and split between us

Im posting my last weekends adventure for inspiration. My friend just got into cars. Me and all our other friends are gear heads who do their own work etc.. He asked us to help turbo charge is 90 Mustang. Last weekend was the first round to get this going. SBF HO 302 engine with a T5 going to TKO600.
Motor out, trans out. Intake off, heads off oil pan off, old cam out. New cam in. New Canton oil pan drilled perfectly for return oil bung for turbo. WIN!!!!! Heads on intake on, flywheel on. Drop engine in car.. Prime engine....Prime engine.....prime.....prime.....WTF? Clip on new ARP oil pump rod, wtf? FAIL!!! Pull engine. pull oil pan, (After draining oil back into the jugs it came in) Fix ARP oil pump shaft, now the pump spins with drill. WIN!!!!! Install oil pan, put back oil, install engine. Prime engine, WIN!!!!! Start engine..... hmm. Start. Hmm.. Start.... 2 hours later he tells us he saved EFI program.. Load last EFI stored profile and make camshaft adjustment. Start. WIN!!!!!! Starter binds, FAIL.... add timing.. WIN!!!!! car starts great!!! runs good with initial tune. Stab tranny, add fluid, install driveshaft, install rad and coolant. Car down off of jack stands.WIN!!! Start car and put in reverse. WTF? Stop car. DOA rear main seal....... as my friend has installed 100's in HO 302's, has to be the seal.... spewing! ![]() So it isnt just you..... keep at it!!!

TedRamAirII,
When we pulled the motor a month ago, we inspected the oil pump and shaft. The shaft had some witness marks on it. I'm pretty new to working on cars but some of the guys thought we had a smoking gun. We switched out the oil pump and shaft, re-installed the motor and it had the same knock. We did feel around the oil pan and didn't find anything unusual. I have all the confidence that this motor will be a beast when I get it back. |

No reason for the pump shaft to have witness marks. Looking to see where it had touched, what it had touched and why it had touched...Could very well have had you fixed and on the road. That's a "BIG IF" the distributor bushing is the only knock source. And was letting the shaft move far enough to get hit by the crank. Somewhat disturbing Clay

Joe - what's on the spec sheet for piston side-clearance?

It's .0045", the minimum required for that piston. If it's piston slap, it's because the skirt collapsed.

I would lean more towards a pin got sloppy than slap. The noise is diff than slap, pretty familiar with the sound slap makes.
I know on my Olds engine, a couple pins were big (clearance), machine shop let it go and said it would be fine, and I assembled it against better judgement. It could probably go 100k miles like that, but just drives me nuts. Think the spec was .0005-7, and the couple in question ended up in the .0012 range, but that's straight from memory. .

My guess is the speculation will be over within a month, after Paul has the engine back in his possession. Can you believe over 20,000 views of this thread? Allot of people will learn something from this. Sorry for the time and expense the principals involved have to deal with. Every engine problem has a solution.

TedRamAirII,
Yes...It does have a windage tray but we have checked the spacing of the windage tray! |

The oil pump....even though turning at half crank speed, is spinning pretty fast with geared teeth, so any knocking would be a lot faster than engine speed, so I think oil pump related is pretty much ruled out. I wonder if a crank counterweight could be rubbing something somewhere! If it had a Mechanical Fuel pump that could surely make a noise like that. Did you ever get your hand around the oil pan to "feel" for any knocking or vibrations? I will be happy when you find the answer.

I assume piston slap would only take place every other revolution on the power stroke?

Everyone is in suspense - can't wait till Paul digs into this engine and finds the cause!
