Yeah I do, whats always stopped me is Im pretty sure the builder told me that he had them set a 1/2 turn. In fact I think it was him that told me I could go to 3/4 first. That said, I cant remember for sure, and the poor guy up and died. So Ive just never done it because Im not sure my information is correct on the original set.

I know I could just re do all 16 valves, but the motor runs strong, and its just noise right?

No need to do the whole thing over. Just go 1/4 turn down from where they are now.

IF they were set correctly in the 1`st place.

Is that thing quiet when cold and then clacks when hot? That`ll give you a clue.

I would still want to pull the valve covers and confirm that all the push rods are spinning.

Yeah its that IF that always stopped me from doing it. I think he said that he set them at a 1/2 turn. But thats not me being 100% sure.

And my engine clacks pretty much all the time. 10-30, 20-50. Doesnt matter.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before in this thread but just note that going purely by turns to get to a certain decimal preload is not taking into account your rocker ratio that is always above 1 to 1.

For instance if spinning your adjustment nut 1/2 a turn drops the nut down the stud by .030" than on the lifter side of the rocker that is a 1.5 ratio you would have preloaded the lifter plunger by .045", not by .030"

I have one sticky lifter that occasionally ticks bad on cold start and then goes away in a couple minutes, but even after that, my valvetrain is always just a little bit ticky. It's annoying hearing it when I'm cruising since it's just barely audible to a point where I can kind of not notice it, but then I get reminded of it immediately again when I drive past something that deflects the sound like a guardrail lmao. Could be an exhaust leak, for all I know. Noisy lifters are so common with Pontiacs that I've gotten used to it, and I don't think it's anything bad going on - my oil pressure is 35-40 PSI at 750 RPM idle with 10W30 and at operating temp, and I never see glitter in the oil changes I do, so I guess it's fine.

Lifetime Goat - Do they make noise at any RPM, or just at idle?
