My 400 is loosely based on that article except I used 7" ali rods ,a T1 inlet,2" headers and a bit more compression, whether my porting is up to Pete Mcarthy's standard I can't say,but it has run 10.1@137mph in a new car, should run easy 9.80's this year. Oh yeah,my cam was the Crane equivalent.

First of all, "Who is Pete McCarthy?" Well maybe I should have asked this question more like this. I have heard the name on and off for a while and decided to find out who he is or was. I found that his name is out there but there isn't really anything with it. Just like this Thread. It starts out as if it Pete built something yet did he? So I started to research who Pete was. I did find that he raced a GTO but could never get it under its index and wrote an editorial blaming the NHRA??? Who picked the combination??? Oh well, that is what I found. I saw that he has a book out there, and haven't seen it in person. If the above is all there is about Pete (and most of what I have found in the Magazines are always someone else’s ideas in his words or that is the way that it appears) I would feel much better reading something from somebody else..but that is just an opinion from a Gear Head Cop that went to one to many statement analysis and interview interrogation schools.

You might want to do a bit more research, because right now you're just spinning your wheels.
![]() Pete McCarthy's book "Pontiac Musclecar Performance, 1955-1979" was kind of the bible of Pontiac engine parts for several years before we started seeing all the aftermarket choices we have now. He certainly contributed greatly to my knowledge of (and enthusiasm for) Pontiacs.

well as someone that does not know who Pete is some of the info you found on the all mighty intrernets, it may come across as you describ but Pete never clamed to know everything but he has done and put in print some of the most important information on Pontiac engines to date and ALWAYS gave credit where credit was due and this may be the very thing that make it look as if Pete is not an accomplished pioneer of the modern Pontiac era and if it wasn't for his wrightings we may not have what we have now.

By the way, it isn't to late for you to do some research on your own. Might even save you some personal embarrassment, especially before you call someone that you do not know, A Dumb Ass..... Out to "mzbk21" I seems that the more information that I dig up the less I find. The more I read the dumber I become. I may be spinninmywheels but at least I am spinnin. I am not taking away any truth to his book, matter of fact, I said I have never seen it in person. I only know that I can not find that much on the person except that that in XXX amount of years he only walked away with one lone trophy. I like drag racing and as I stated I would rather listen to someone who walks that walk every day. Take for instance, JB over in Leoma, Tn. At least they build something. I am not trying to run anybody down, I just ask a legit question and I get attacked. If someone could or would show me proof I would be more than happy to retract my few tidbits that I have placed upon this site................. Now I don't mean ( Dude said it so it must be true ) I want proof. In my years I have found it very interesting at the amount of people that lash out instead of putting on any articulable facts that would alter the outcome of any situation. Instead they ramble and rave and never accomplish anything. And out to "pro-tour 79" Thank you for your input. Your actually took the time to address an issue. That may very well be a legit reason. Thank you for your kindness. As far as the almighty internet...it may not be the bible but you can find some interesting things on here if you know where to look. Have a nice Day

spinnin, I agree with your assessment as it was addressed to me. My first line was meant as light-hearted jest, since your name lent itself so nicely to the line.
Also, I don't know the general opinion on this board of Pete, so I went easy in stating my own opinion of him. When his book was first shown to me, it was a real eye-opener. I spent many weekends traipsing through junkyards looking for some of the elusive parts shown in the book. In the years since the books was published there have been very few corrections to the data Pete first put together, which stands as a testament to the research he did before publishing. I was merely pointing out that he is held in high regard by many, at least for his knowledge of Pontiacs.

As far as holding someone in high regards, that is great, If I knew more I might myself. As far as this goes, I can only find that people will attribute mountains of monuments in others names without the first ioda of proof. Just looking for the proof. Thanks Martin |

From his website at http://www.petemccarthy.com/: "Pete McCarthy, 42-year veteran NHRA Stock and Super Stock driver, builder and tuner, has studied Pontiacs since 1962. "
(Warning - his website plays a cheezy electronic version of "Little GTO", so turn down the volume before you go there. )

Pete McCarthy was very involved with and contributed many good technical articles within early volumes of Pontiac Enthusiast magazine. One good series spread over many editions in 1994 was titled "Sciencing Out the Pontiac Engine". Good stuff, well worth the read. This was only one of his many series on various subjects involving Pontiac. And his early development with port work on Pontiac iron heads is legendary.

This site amazes me. I was once told not to argue with idiots because they will only drag you down. No, I am not Bruce Fulper. I am not Jim Butler. I am not Jim Hand. I am not Mark Kauffman. I am someone that ask a simple question and can't get a straight answer from you either. And instead of wanting to see my balls how about helping the rest of the gang answer the question. Answer it correctly with facts and I will gladly sit down, but the more that you and the rest of you ramble, rant, and rave the more that you prove my point. And to you "goatasaurus rex" No, I am not the typical cop and have no intention of being the typical cop. Once again you as many other would rather just run someone down instead of looking for the truth. I know no one on this forum yet due to a question that I have asked you think you know me.......You are wrong again.. If you come out through Chattannooga Tn let me know. We can talk Pontiacs all you want. Heck, bring whatever you have and lets line them up. A day at the strip would be great. Not trying to cause a problem, Just asked a simple qusestion.....................

Sounds like you've got a thick skin, at least. That's certainly useful when dealing with some of the clowns around here.
Stick around.... it gets better.

I can't understand what the big deal is. If more people on the Forum were as you things would end up so much better. I will look back through my old Mag. pile and reread some of the things that I may have overlooked in the past. I will never claim to be anything more than a gearhead looking to go fast.
