when I redid my Tempest Sprint sport coupe it was even rarer than the Tempest Custom,
so I used a Chevelle with split bench.
You can do the same and just replace the center panels with correct heat pressed vinyl.
Contact SMS fabric,they have heat pressed vinyl.
Contact Legendary again and ask if they can get you a set of 66 Chevelle to use pieces of.

Boost, have you contacted these guys? http://www.legendaryautointeriors.com/ They are the best of anyothers doing interiors.

Maybe they can help you out seeing you have a correct door panel pattern from Abe. They might be able to help you with the seats too.

Well, here's the issues:

I contacted Legendary first and inquired about getting a complete interior for my tempest. In their literature they delineate my specific "post" car as a Tempest Custom-Sports Coupe. When I spoke with the sales guy, he said that they offered what I'd need but did not do the split bench (w/o the arm rest) and had no plans to do so. He suggested OPGI or as a last resort PUI.

I then, contacted PUI and explained what I needed. They said that they offer the split bench (w/o the arm rest) but do not offer the correct pattern for the rear bench seat as it is not something that enough people have asked for.

Thus, there are two companies that supposedly make most of what I need but I am hesitant to try and mix and match due to dye color issues and perhaps even quality issues.

I may have to try this suggestion for the 66 Chevelle....

If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know... All I wanted to do was to buy a package deal and get it over with... This issue is becoming stressful.

1966Goat: That's about what I'm tempted to do... Almost ready to just do a clone and be done with it.... It's just that we started with a nice clean numbers matching Tempest and we were really hoping to make it a Tempest once again... We're knee deep in a full frame off resto so we're really trying to do it right. I suppose if it were easy, everyone would have a Tempest

There is no major rush to get this done right now, we've still got to finish the metal and start on getting the body work perfected. I just wanted to start lining things up and figured that this would be the easy part... Apparently I was wrong...

They claim to have the correct seat covers and door panels for the Tempest model...

Wonder what the quality is like?

Also, curious about the seat foams... They offer new seat foam for buckets and bench seats. However, I don't see any for the rear bench... Any thoughts? (I know the old style material is available but it seem much more labor intensive than just doing the foam)

My next door neighbors brother is an interior guy. He told me he could make a new seat cover that looked identical to stock. He would make it out of a nicer vinyl. Have you looked into that route?

Might be easier to do that. Get the front and rear "made"..

P.S. If you clone a Tempest into a GTO, you will be on the list..... Keep that in mind...

Hey 67: I hear you on the cloning.... LOL I am really trying to do this Tempest right but it's getting harder and harder to do. I have a new tail section for the tempest (of course it's for the gto) but I had already sourced some tempest lights. My body shop keeps insisting to leave it and clone it.... No, No No!!! I want to have the rare Tempest vs the common GTO...

Anyway, here's what my looked like interior wise.
Still trying to piece together something and currently trying to locate a local shop that can make me covers (as an alternative)... If your neighbors brother can make some covers and door panels that look identical to stock and are priced reasonably, I'd be interested....

So far here is what I have found: (adding to the confusion)
1. Legendary makes the rear bench for the sport coupe however, it's only in GTO and Lemans patterns, not Tempest (So that puts them out of the running). They don't make anything for the Tempest.

2. PUI makes the front split bench (w/o arm rest)- for the Tempest- $289.95

3. PUI also makes the rear bench but they -PUI-claim it is not for a "post" car (which to my understanding is a Sport Coupe)--- Yet the OPGI catalog specifically states that the PUI Brand eat cover is for a coupe... (They can't make this easy can they.) If I get it wrong, I get to pay a 20% restocking fee...

4. PUI offers a front door panel in the proper Tempest pattern - $199.95 for the pair

5. Yet they only offer a rear door panel in the proper pattern for the Convertible. (nice huh?)

So, I can get most everything from PUI since no one else makes the correct patterns and then I just need to have someone do up some rear door cards... (I can buy matching material from PUI as well- so at least it's all similar)

I'm getting closer... I think.

Are you talking about the front seat being "SPLIT"? If so I have the same seat and I have a coupe.

Boostmaster, get your seatcovers from Legendary Upholstry in NY. Stay away from OPG and the Distinctive Industries crap they sell. The rounded bolster pattern will be correct from Legandary, not flat as I've seen shown, and seen in many restorations. Ask Old Goat 67 how good Legendary's covers are.

GT182: I certainly would like to be able to use Legendary but as I stated above, when I spoke with a rep from Legendary, he told me that they did not offer everything I was looking for. Do you know something I do not? If so, please tell me...

I am hesitant to use sub-par quality on a project of this scale but I don't know where else to go.

1967Tempest: What do you think your next door neighbor's brother would charge to do up an interior? (I am willing to explore every option)

Im not sure how it would work out having a set made. Theres a heat pressed pattern in it that cant be duplicated unless you get the proper material,again SMS.
All Tempests had a bench seat,only LeMans and GTO had buckets.LeMans and GTO also offered a bench seat that had an arm rest and was called notchback.
Feel fortunate,my Tempest Sprint sport coupe has the optional vinyl interior(wall to wall rubber mats in stead of carpet) and Im guessing there was only a hand full of those made.When I get around to redoing it,I still have my old covers and even saved the back seat,using one out of a LeMans hardtop for my upholstery redo.

Also, thanks for the clarification of how the seats came optioned. With the amount of Tempests built you would think that there would be at least some demand for bench seat covers.

So, with the option of the 66 Chevelle bench, (correct me if I'm wrong), I would have to purchase a seat cover from a 66 chevelle bench and then purchase heat pressed vinyl from SMS and then "merge" the two to make one "correct" seat cover? Sound like alot of work and extra hassle. Do you have a pic of what yours came out like?

I was hoping to just be able to buy some covers, slap in some new foam, slip on the covers and call it a day...

BTW, I know people have said it 100 times but, I haven't "SEEN" what the differences are between PUI and Legendary. Does anyone have some pics as examples? I'm asking because I have been in contact with both companies. PUI was helpful and willing to work with me. Legendary was not. I received a sample from PUI and the color and quality looked good. I have seen PUI cloth seat covers and never noticed any issues. So, I'm wondering if there are huge visible deficiencies between the two.

Additionally, I had been looking at OPGI because they offered a complete interior package in 4 various stages which looked like it might be a decent deal and cover all the little odds and ends in one order... (with the ability to delete items you might not need)

What every happened with the seats?

Im in the exact same boat with my 64 tempest and split back front seats. Its either use SMS and spend about $2K or use the PUI stuff that would not be correct for the model. Nothing in between.

My project has been on hold since early fall... Ran out of funds.

What I found was that Legendary WILL NOT do Tempest stuff for us as there is, in their opinion, not enough demand...

PUI does make everything that will be required for the Tempest; they are located in KY (so I can save on shipping), AND I may have a hook-up for securing a dealer cost...

I've checked a bunch of other interior people and everyone wants an arm and a leg and most are not as concerned with "originality" as Legendary and PUI...

I've seen PUI stuff up close- it wasn't as terrible as people make it out to be- actually seemed fine to me. I have seen some legendary stuff as well... I have not seen/ touched them in a side to side comparison so I cannot say who is better....

My first inclination was to go with Legendary but they weren't interested in Tempest business so I will be going with PUI when the funds are once again available.

I suppose if all the Tempest owners flooded Legendary with phone calls, we might get their attention. Otherwise, we're stuck.
