68 GTO Hood tach placement

We have a 68 GTO that we are going to install an aftermarket hood tach on. The directions and the templete says to cut the large hole at approx 16" on center from the back edge of the hood. I have an original spare hood with what I think is an original hood tach cut out that is about 12 3/4 on center from the back edge. Before we cut the hole I thought I should ask what is correct. Your help is appreciated.
