Having the engine upside down on an engine stand, having everything clean and being able to manipulate the pan and bolts, is such a much easier deal than working under the car, even with a lift.
Of course you know BOP makes a one piece oil pan gasket, also...AND after the rear main/pan gasket install, you can hang the engine from a hoist w/ oil in it, tilting it forward for a while (maybe a day) the backward for a while, to make sure everything is sealed up (yes I've done this...)

Maybe some can educate me on the hanging of the engine...From what I can tell, the seal doesn't have oil pressure on it. There appears to be a hole in the bottom of the main cap where the oil drains through and the oil slinger on the crank is supposed to re-direct oil away from the seal. I know that hanging the engine to see if there are any leaks is supposed to test out the integrity of the repair...but I wonder how many engine that are not oil tight still run without any issues with leaks from the rear main?

I did this on my 68 GTO a couple years ago. Had a 400 in it at the time with the old rope seal and it leaked bad. I recommend pulling the motor. I tried to do it in the car but had to jack the engine up pretty high to get the oil pan off and just decided to pull it. I put the BOP Viton seal in it. I just took the rear cap off and pulled out what was left of the rope seal on the block side. The BOP seal just slid right down in the block side(did not have to pull the crank at all or remove any of the other caps). Put a small dab of ultra grey silicone on each side of the seal. Cleaned the cap and put some ultra grey in the holes and ends of the cap where the instructions tell you and installed the other half of the seal and bolted it back together. Hasn't leaked a drop since.
I have a 461(400 stroked) in the car now and it has the BOP seal in it but it leaks. It started leaking on the engine stand before it was even installed. Kinda ticked me off. Someone else assembled the rotating assembly on the 461. But, when its running it don't leak. Shut it down and there will be a small puddle on the floor. |
