Call me crazy, it's ok, I've been dealing with these demons for years, but I've always been of the mindset that if the 'Shades of Gray' vary for the different parts, there is a greater character and depth to the completed unit that makes it interesting to look at when taken in with the rest of the underside. I'm certainly not advocating that these particular shades represent the exact color of a bare steel tube or cast iron part or annealed flat bar spring, but it does in my opinion give the assembly character, while being easy to maintain at this level.

The picture in the previous post of the CM-G rear with the assembled springs did have brighter drums originally but I changed that to more of a cast color later, and is now more like these examples of a GY-G rear end.

With that said:

Primer is Tempo A702 Zinc Phosphate primer. Need lots of light coats. No heavy coats or it will never dry... unless you can fit the part in your wife's oven. Found at your local aviation parts house or online.

To get rid of the surface pitting on the steel tubes, glaze coat and/or Evercoat high build primer, sanded smooth

Steel tubes: Seymour Stainless Steel 16-054

Cast iron pumpkin: Eastwood Spray Gray

Brake backing plates: Eastwood Brake Gray

Brake drums: Bill Hirsch Cast Iron High heat primer.... Cooked in the oven for curing and maximum spousal anxiety.

Leaf Springs: OER High solids silver K89580 from Classic Industries or probably found online too.

Polished off with some custom made decals correct for the application and some Quanta inspection paint replicated paint daubs from known original examples.

Nice catch! Gardner does what he does, but I didn't know that one or I would have tweaked it before the install. Straps black or green??? It's too hard to tell from exposure in this picture, but I don't think I knew that about the straps at the time so probably going to have to say black. To the best of my knowledge that car has never surfaced here on these boards since the RM Auction several years ago.

Here's a couple of before pictures that shows why I decided to fluff the rear end and improve the exhaust. This area of the car just wasn't done to the level of the rest of the car. You may have missed the 4 black bolts in the floor pan filling/hiding the holes left behind by the Magna Flow exhaust pipe hanger brackets.

Other than this area and a few other minor spots, the car was awesome, so it was definitely worth the effort.
