I have the tach I bought from Ames in my 64. The position in the dash is what makes it hard to read not so much the font or the size. I am sure it’s not as accurate as a sun or an auto meter but I love the way it looks and since I have a rev limiter it’s more just for eye candy than anything else. The Ames tach is a really nice piece

Did they paint it as well as rechrome it? it looks awesome and quite a bit less than a new one

Yes they repainted it and did the rechrome too. I provided the paint but I don't recall if they used it or mixed their own. I think they used it. Its a perfect match to the upper dash that I painted.

They were not able to send the remaining paint back due to shipping laws. Laws I ignored sending them the paint.

When I looked at the cost vs effort I would have to put in it was a no brainer for me.

I think I paid more like $300+ last year and I did have them paint my bezel low gloss Black.

I also supplied them with the Blue paint that I had color matched to my original painted bezel. Regardless of Bezel color they all were painted Blue around the gauge openings (which on a GTO gets covered by the aluminum dash insert) and including the strip above the gauge openings which remains exposed.

Most don't bother to paint this area Blue but I was anal enough to want it to be as "factory correct" as I could do.

In the end, the Blue I supplied was not as dark/dusky as the original Blue.

Vacuum Orna-Metal also screwed up which areas were to be Black and which were to be Blue. But they realized their mistake, had me send it back, and repainted it correctly the 2nd go round.

I thought it was kinda expensive including shipping costs etc. but in the grand scheme of things I was glad I did it and very happy with the results.

Getting a "correct" color Blue is problematic as many threads here can attest.

But if you want to go the same route, I'm pretty sure they will remember doing my bezel and be able to do the same for you. You should consult with them about what Blue paint to use for correct type of paint and try to find a suitable color.

I had Vacuum Ornametal do mine last for my 65 last summer. $385 plus return shipping was a total of $436. 4 or 5 week turn around at that time.

I spoke to Frank at Vacuum Orna-Metal yesterday. He quoted me the same price as Rich ‘Cardo’. I am going to go ahead with it. Tried the spaz stix. Was not satisfied with the ‘chrome’ effect. Plus, as hard as I tried, I wasn’t happy with my masking job. Besides, while driving, I will see my dash all the time. I would not be happy looking at my inferior attempt. In the big scheme of this job on my car, $385 + shipping isn’t huge compared to looking at a dash I’m not happy with every time I go for a cruise.

That is exactly why i went this route too. I actually just dropped off all of my pot metal and chrome at the chrome shop on Monday. I was nervous about the price to rechrome the heater control for the same reasons, but the heater control itself ended up being only $85. I was suprised, i thought it would be much more. As far as the total bill, a slight case of indigestion but more than fair overall.

Just got my dash assembled after getting it back from Vacuum Orna-Metal. Very pleased with results. You can see how well the reproduction tach looks too.
