Here's the only close up photo I have of the rally stripes on my car before I started the restoration. Clearly they are not to the factory specs we deciphered from the assembly manual. I'm sure they are not factory original as the car was definitely repainted prior to my purchase. And I think the stripes were applied as tape. I wonder how the factory actually applied the Rally Stripe option, decal, paint or tape?

I like the black rally stripes, particularly in my case with triple white scheme. I think it accentuates the "coke bottle" styling, but is subtle from a distance. You hardly notice them in the old side view photo of my car.

Based on these old pics not sure I will go with the factory specs. As you've been wrestling with, kinda like them a little closer together than the 0.25". You also got to wonder, unless they were decals, how accurately the factory was at following specs for applying the stripes.

I'm going to look through my car show photos to see if I can find some other examples of the stripes.

That's an excellent photo kk68. They are much closer to what I can see from pics of my old Mayfair Maize car. The spacing seems incorrect in the assembly manual. If I do it, I am not going to put them that far apart. I'm certain the original pinstripes were painted, as they were on all previous years. Photos I've seen from the era shows them using a jig to paint the stripes.
Your rear stripe indicates to me that it's not the original. I don't recall them coming to a point at the rear and also, it should be 1/2" above the style line, whereas yours is right on the line. Spacing and size seem right though.

I found another pic of my car from back when I first brought it home. The stripe is pretty subtle. In fact, I never even recalled the stripe until someone on this forum pointed it out from this photo... I don't think that the car had never been repainted and still wore the original wheel discs. I suspect that the side moulding was dealer applied.
On the other hand, it looks like a single line so it too may have been applied by a previous owner. It's been almost 35 years since I got rid of the car...memories 'change'.

I know brochures are notoriously inaccurate (note the 400 on the rocker trim), but I'm thinking this picture from the '68 performance brochure shows the stripes pretty close to how they actually were.

Well there you go. Agree with trophy421. Although, interestingly when I pull out and look at my actual brochure you can see that the distance from body crease to lower stripe varies quite a bit in this photo. On the door it's almost right on the body line crease, while the front part of fender it's quite a bit higher. Obviously the factory was not as particular as us. Stripes also appear to be closer than the 1/4" specified in the assembly manual.

Another note, if you look at the brochure 2-page spread photo of the hardtop right before the convertible, black rally stripes were clearly retouched in the photo as they cut across the flower stems in the foreground 🤔

Yeah, that looks right to me.
Agreed that the line appears to waver more than I'd be happy with. Also, I'm almost ready to believe that the .250" between the lines is a gaffe in the assembly manual.

I love the look of lacquer factory paint cars like that pic from I Dream of Jeannie. These base coat clear coat paint jobs are like a colored mirror...you look at a car and just see reflections of the background like a mirror.

Greg, I just saw a car for sale online this week that had the original paint (Verdoro Green) with this White stripe. I just searched for it but came up empty. Dang it! I'll keep looking.

Actually Greg, I think that looks pretty good. Looks good on the yellow one above too.

I remember 66 or 67 chevelle Super Sports having a similar stripe as well. Accents the body line down there and breaks it up just enough to be subtle.

I finally got around to trying this with a cheap parts store striping kit. Not to scale but gives me an idea of what it would look like. I don't see it being worth the effort to do the way I was going to...with paint.
Also, trying a new wheel.

Love that Blue! Somewhere I have old (online) pictures I saved of a Red 68 that was my motivation for getting my car done. Its had white rally stripes & my first thought was "why would somebody add those to correctly restored car?" not because I didn't like them, but rather I had no clue until later years it was a factory option.
I like them, but I'll bet most people wold not realize they ever came factory.
