Using a ratchet will lengthen their life immenseley over an an impact, yes I realize the impact is quicker, and easier, but you're slowly destroying the threads.

My experince was with a strut compressor, and an internal coil spring compressor, both failed from using an impact on them. I saw the aftermath, it was someone else both times that experienced the failures. The manufacturers say in the directions not to use an impact on any of these type of tools. Spring, and strut compressors can kill someone when they fail.

An engine leveler isn't as critical, but someone can still get injured, or parts can get damaged due to failures of the threaded components.

I hate using engine cranes to R&R engines, I've never even owned one. Been using chainfalls suspeded from above for 55 years.

I've posted this before, but even #2 grade 5/16" fasteners are about 1200# each, so 4800# for 4 of them. I doubt anyone is lifting a 4800# Stratostreak engine, and transmission combo. Even using an aluminum manifold you're fine, as long as the fastener is screwed in roughly 1 inch into the aluminum hole, you're still just under 5000# capacity.
