I'm not so sure about that. I have an original from '74 which is done on a thicker laminated decal material. I can tell for sure that one definitely isn't silk screened.

A two color silkscreen would have also been a really labor intensive and expensive way to create hundreds of thousands of stickers. You'd be able to feel a difference in the texture of the print from the background. The color application would be more even as well as opposed to the uneven and splotchy quality on these. For example, take a look at a seriograph print or some t-shirts which are both silkscreened and show very even color. I think they were just printed as cheaply and quickly as possible, like most GM underhood decals.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the air cleaner stencils weren't silkscreened either. I've been told they were originally done via a process called pad printing which explains why the quality is so variable. Silkscreen happens to be is the best way I can find to replicate that at home.

You are probably right, they probably used some sort of offset printing. But, I don't know how that process actually works. I just know on the earlier ones, you can see dots which I thought was because of silkscreening.

Rubber pad with design picks up the ink then flips over and stamps the item.
Except rolls around probably on cylinder.
