Thanks, I have just over 150 miles on it. Been optimizing position of shifter before final buttoning up of floor boards. It handles pretty darn good, so far! John

The exhaust looks great. Are you MIG welding? Also, what are you using to cut the pieces? I will be doing the exhaust on my '60 Catalina sometime in the next few months.

Yes I am useing a mig and a chop box to cut the tubing.
I used my buddies ban saw to cut the 90's for the X-pipe.
I think I'm going to need more elbows when I get to the
rear for the tail pipes. This is starting to get a little costly.

I haven't posted for a while. It is getting close. Tonight I turned the fuel pump on for the first time and checked for leaks. Of all places for a leak, the plug at the rear of the pressure regulator leaked. That is now fixed. The regulator is set to 4.5 LBS. I looked down the throat of all three carbs, no leaks there.
The exhaust is on also. Here are some pictures.

Smile It's alive

We started the engine for the first time on Saturday. I went back to the garage today to adjust the transmission linkage so that the transmission and gearshift agree. Did find another slow gas leak at the front and center carbs. We decided to let the engine cool down, then we will go over all of those line connections. Here are a couple of links to the start-up. A friend (ford guy) mislabeled the engine size as a 383. He is supposed to correct that to read 389.

Default My pair of '63 project cars.

Here are my two '63 projects. The black car is a sport coupe with 3-speed manual and the white one is automatic. After checking the white car out, and buying a battery. it fired right up and purrs like a kitten.

Plans are to possibly make the white one a driver after making it road worthy, while playing with the black one. It needs a lot of TLC as you can see, but is solid other than the roof. As I've said elsewhere in this forum, I'm seriously considering swapping a C5 Corvette 6-speed transaxle and rear suspension into the black one to keep the same basic layout, with a Pontiac engine.

This is the first time I've been around these engines, so it will be a learning process for me. Thank goodness I found this forum and the Little Indians website. Any and all help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Nice-looking Tempests! They will be a lot of work, but a lot of fun, too. IMO, don't even think about straightening the roof on the black one---just weld a straight roof on. I spent a long time on my '63 racecar straightening the left side of the roof where it had apparently been run under a tree branch (or a bridge abutment!). If I'm faced with that again, I'll just replace the roof. Normally, a roof is the one part of a car least likely to be damaged, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement.

Default Roof

I had a body man come over and actually lay hands on the roof and he said he could fix it for $1500. I found another roof at my local yard for $225. Not sure of the cost to install it. Either way, it will be a lot of work, but other than the roof, a solid, complete car.

It shouldn't be too hard to install----find the original seam, melt out the lead, drill out the spot welds and weld the new one in. Then bodywork the seam the modern way--Bondo, not lead.

It sounds like you got the perfect car. If the roof hadn't been bad, someone else probably would have gotten the car a long time ago. But by tackling one big fix, you finish with a nice, complete car at a fraction of the price.

Good luck with your new projects.

Jim

What a blast to drive , It's gona be my daily driver
for the summer. Still a few things to do but it's all
stuff I can do in between driving it. And the fun continues.

Was working on a 326 for one of the wagons and discovered a 4 foot new hire. I wondered why nothing was chewing the rat poison bags lately. Guess I owe him a raise.
