75,000 btu John Deere blaster on diesel. Run it all winter long in my shop, welding hooch and off the back of my welding rig up in the frozen north. Has a thermostat and runs well on diesel. The black Mr. heaters dont run well on diesel. If your heating a small area (1 car garage) it will heat it quick and blow you out if you leave it on. Approx 8 hrs on a 4 -5 gal tank. Best heater I've owned.

It will keep my 1 car garage warm enough to work even at -10f. I'd say its more than enough for Texas. Oops your in new York. It will work fine there too

I'm leaning towards the 220v unit others have suggested. I'll make room in my panel which is conveniently located in the same corner of the garage that I would hang the heater from.

LOL Adam. You are right. I was just messing around. I grew up in the north. Up there, we tried to survive the winters so we could enjoy the rest of the year. Down here, we just try to survive the summers.

I once attended a wedding that was on the bridge over the river walk, followed by a "boat" ride with the wedding party... mid day... IN AUGUST! ...and I was wearing a suit!!!

All I have to say is they damn well better still be married! THAT WAS HOT!

Old Goat,
sorry to hear that. Go electric for the basement, IMO.

BTW, I just read your signature. I've looked that that pic hundreds of times, but I just read this: "1st time on a dragstrip, 1964. Flagstart !"

FLAG START! That's cool!

Does anyone see why one unit is double the price of the other? Aside from mounting brackets and slight output difference, why is one $100 and the other $200?

800 watts difference, 4800 vs 4000, is probably the major difference that I see in them. For roughly he same price you could have 2, 4000 Watt heaters vs 1, 4800 Watt heater. Now if you have the capacity to run 2 of them with proper wiring and breaker capacity you'll of course have a larger electric bill, but be able to heat your building warmer, faster.

Yes, I saw that, but double the price for 800 watts?

I only have room for one 220 breaker.

Then there's this one:
http://m.homedepot.com/p/Dimplex-480...831L/203568956

Home depot has a wide variety and I can't tell which one to buy. I have gift cards there so I'd like to buy from them.

Can anyone help determine which unit to buy for my 12x26x9' garage, not insulated on two walls with two Windows?

One that looks good says it draws 21amps, but I was planning on a 20 amp 220 line. Guess that's not good?
That's this unit which appears to be the same as the NewAir model mentioned above, which i like a lot:

Another seemed to have a efficiency mode where the fan continued to run after the thermostat shuts off the heating element. A smart idea for safety too. But others don't mention that.

This is the more expensive unit with the fan:

Probably a call to the company will answer your questions quicker than posting here.

My self I doubt your going to be able to warm that much space up without some insulation. The walls and windows are only a small part of the equation, the ceiling is where you really loose heat and without a barrier of insulation. The insulation will pay for itself in a season as compared to trying to heat the space without insulation and add to your comfort. Loose fitting garage doors without insulation will also be inefficient.

Thanks. I'll give them a call today.

As for the insulation, the walls and ceiling is finished in some sort of stucco plaster material, which seems better than plain sheetrock. But I'll go back into the attic and look into laying insulation down.

At this pace, you might want to forget heat and start thinking about your air conditioning needs...

Sorry, I couldn't resist...Good luck with your decision.

LOL. Ya, well, it's been warm and I've been away a lot. Very little time for garage tinkering lately.

I know my fans really want to know so I thought I'd tell you that I pulled the trigger and ordered this unit from Home Depot, which looks amazingly similar to the one tekheavy is using. I really like that it runs the fan after the heating element is turned off because I've ready reviews of people complaining about how hot the unit gets as it turns off, so this should alleviate that issue plus get extra efficiency into the mix.

I called Dimplex and they would neither confirm nor deny that they are the same unit LOL. Anyway, my installation should be the same as his since my panel is right below where I intend to mount it. I guess I need a 30 amp breaker since this draws 21 amps.

In my 24x36 pole barn i have a woodstove, a 50,000 btu propane torpedo, 15oo watt radiant heater the one i like is the radiant i put it close to me. It doesnt stink, make objects sweat and its quick. Just think of it as zone heating. Woody
