My stupid question of the week...
How the heck can you have .900" lift without getting valve-piston contact? Are the shape of the combustion chambers so different that the valve seat area is like .300" farther from the deck than on a "normal" Pontiac head? Thanks to anyone who answers the rookie on this one, John

Goatrider, thats an easy one. You make the valve reliefs in the pistons deep enough to allow for that lift (and still have some clearance....080" intake, .100" exhaust minimum).

Any other websites on these heads? I am wanting to build a All Pontiac motor for my Top Sportsman car over the winter to replace my 588BBC. These are probably going to be the heads I will need. I will need around 1000 hp but I will also need something reliable.

Will these need "custom" rocker shafts? It doesnt sound as if they are supplying rocker shafts.

i think T&D and Jesel will be making shafts for the tiger head. i'm sure bob and frank would be happy to talk about specifics with anybody who is interested.
as far as i know bob is the only person who is running the heads right now. they picked his car up a little at VMP, but i would expect to see significant gains when he goes back to the victor intake. they had the new BOP intake on the car at VMP and it was probably costing them some power. |

Regarding the BOP intake...it's not a junk intake. when placed on Bruce Maichle's engine (which makes more power and turns more RPM than Bob's), it picked up over Bruce's "mega-modified" Victor. When these heads were dyno tested back in February, Bruce's Victor was placed on the engine, and it didn't make any more power than with Bob's basically stock Victor. It made the same peak, but the average was off a little bit. However, we could see that at 7000-7200 rpm (where the dyno test was stopped) that the intake was just starting to "stretch its legs". Even though Bob had the 400-cfm heads, because of the cam, it wasn't meant to make serious power above 7000 rpm. Bruce's intake wasn't choking it, it was just not getting the velocity up leading into the port like it does on his engine at 8000+ rpm. And the BOP intake worked better for him than his modified Victor! So it looks like the BOP intake will be best suited for those that an unmodified Victor will not work. Spend the "megabucks" porting the Victor, or buy the BOP and bolt it on. Would like to someone like Keefer or Vaught test a Victor and a BOP back-to-back under pressure.

brian- my post was not meant to cast the BOP intake in a negative light, merely to point out that it might be too much for bob's current combination. i also heard some discussion suggesting that more converter and gear will also be necessary to make power further up in the rpm range with the tiger heads.

As a matter of fact there is evidence to suggest just the opposite. We know the BOP intake picked up 35 HP over the Victor on Bob's motor in a back to back test on the same dyno. This combined with the Bruce M. data would give no indication that the intake is not suited for Bob's application. In fact it was designed for just such an application. Other comparisons of HP due to components on this engine came from different dynos on different days. The bottom line is the car did not ET as expected, however the most credible data suggests that the intake is the least suspect of all the components. I was at VMP and would have loved to see them go back to the Victor for a pass. I am confident the results would have shown the BOP intake superior. With that said more testing is currently underway and will be released as soon as it is available.

wade- i guess a good question would be what is the minimum peak (.700+ lift) cylinder head flow recommended for use with the BOP intake? is this the focus of the current testing? i would also have been curious to see the results of a back to back test of the victor vs. your intake at VMP.

The next testing will be on E-heads. It is our opinion from a design point of view that our intake will have a positive effect when the .600 lift mark is reached providing other aspects of the combination are optimised accordingly. Thanks for the input
