'67 Tempest, Are you using a long snout water pump with the MkVIII fan? I am getting ready to replace the radiator and mechanical fan with an electric (DC Controller).

I pulled my leaky Rodney Red out of my '66 today, getting it ready to install a Griffin crossflow (that should be here tomorrow). I have a used MKVIII fan and it doesn't appear that even after trimming the shroud as far as possible, it'll still be an inch or so too deep and won't clear the water pump pulley bolts.

I might just go buy a new Taurus fan locally tomorrow......

Default I am also...

using the Mark VIII fan on my 69 bird. Has never been on high speed yet. I also got the Hollister relay system. Very well made product here are a few pics.

Mark VIII two speed fan

Hollister Relay setup. This is a really robust system with high quality relays and wires. They added an extra relay to activate the fan when the A/C is on

Installed with a PRC radiator

So is anyone running the Lincoln VIII setup with a stock harrison 4 core? I have known about these fans for a while but I have been reluctant because the shroud it something like 19" tall and my harrison 4 core is 15" tall. Can someone out there verify the Lincoln VIII fan height. also how are you guys attaching this to your radiators?

I used the transcooler type zip ties. My rad has no provisions for brackets. Works good.

Here is my '66 with the Griffin "universal" radiator, Taurus fan and DCControls controller.

It works great now, but I had to deviate from the DCControls instructions. I mounted the sensor on the "cold" side of the radiator, and even with the controller set as cold as it would go, was still running 210-230. I moved it to the driver's (hot) side, and it runs at a constant 185, even with the air on.

It still needs some wire cleanup and I need to blast and paint the brackets I made.

This Taurus fan rocks! I drove the car for about an hour today, in traffic, lots of idling at lights, 80 degrees out, and the temp gauge never moved off 190 (180 degree thermostat). Best mod I've done since the Tremec!

I cranked the DCControls controller down as far as it will go. I might have a discrepancy on my gauge, since it runs at 190ish no matter what. The thermostat never closes, so I might just not have enough cooling capacity to do so. Timing is right on.

Another minor issue I am having is that my LM-1 that is hardwired to the car gives me a low voltage error when the fan comes on. My voltage at the battery is 14.5 idling (measured with my Fluke DMM. The Autometer voltage gauge in the dash reads 13 ish) with the fan running full tilt. I can't get it to work at all as long as the fan is running, even at high RPM while driving. Odd.....

I have a 63 amp externally regulated alternator, and I am looking at upgrading to a 12SI or possibly a CS-144 while I am at it.......

Tripower455, you really need an alternator upgrade! Give that power hungry fan a CS144.

My 66 with the Taurus fan is set to kick on at 175deg. If idling in traffic the car will slowly creep up to 180 then the fan will cool it back down to ~160 before cycling off after maybe 2-3min of running. Cruising around the gauge stays quite low due to the big Alu radiator, and when dump heat into the radiator the fan always keeps things cool by kicking on for a couple of minutes at a time, although the fan doesn't actually run that often in normal driving (=nice power and mpg savings!). If I leave the fan ON all the time, the temp never gets warm, maybe 130deg max!

Yeah, I'm definitely doing the alternator upgrade.

How are you controlling your fans? Are you using the DCControl unit?

Glenn:
I had 100A 1 wire from Summit for 90$. Worked great. But the stereo, MARK VIII fan, gauges, headlight relay upgrade, I didn't want to under power the alt. I got a 140 1 wire. the idle needs to be around 950. A tad high for the 4 speed, but my gauge with the fan on high, 3000 watts through the stereo, high beams on and all the gauges. My gauge never dipped below 14.

I ran this alt at an 800 rpm and it would dip to 13.5, the internal voltage regulator would come on and the alt would kick out more juice. 900RPM idle.14.4 ROCK SOLID!!!

Remember that the gauge in the car, if run off of the fuse box WILL have a little lose.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...d=448542309013

With shipping same as Summit for the 100A. The seller, Bill, emailed me right away and answered all of my questions etc... I ordered the Alt on Friday and had it the following Wednesday.

I didn't see any of that type on the web, but if you email him, you will get a response right away.

HTH,
Dave

I'm using a $20 thermal probe with an adjustable pot actuating the fan relays. See post #30 on page 2 of this thread for details. I've used this setup on 4 cars now, and it's performed flawlessly over many years and miles of use.

You will be amazed at what more juice will do for the car. Did you upgrade the headlights to relays?
