interesting......would have expected the tail shaft area to be broken if your bolt on drive shaft loop was the cause...
how did the trany cross member look?.....was the bolt on driveshaft loop preztled? Bell housing already cracked prior ?.....missaligned or loose bell housing? ......I would guess that a flailing drive shaft may stress the bellhousing reguardless of type of loop...

But his is a TH350... On a TH350 the trans mount is on the trans case itself, not on the tailshaft housing like the TH400. IMO that's also why TH350's crack more cases/bells than TH400's do. Agree there is no 100% guarantee of keeping the trans from being damaged when a shaft fails, but I still feel the "no-drill" loops compound the damage that may happen. ![]() FWIW. Bret P. |

The loop is fine, bellhousing bolts were tight. I am running solid motor mounts and a poly trans mount.

wow thats nasty! glad your ok!... FWIW I run one of those no drill loops , but i tweaked it and actually bolted it to the bottom of my crossmember instead of putting under the trans mount like they want!

It really sucks, that was the 2nd run on that new transmission. I never used the trans brake either but...
Today and tomorrow will be mad wrench fest from down south, I am going back to the smaller 9x28x15 slicks for the time being. The great thing about Bandimere is it's a world class track, excellent track prep, and they even have track coolers under the pavement.

Just finish cutting the bell off of it and install a JW bell on it if it didn't crack into the pan rail or pump area. I've busted a few th350 cases over the years. The trans may have come loose and caused the drive shaft to bind up. They usally break at the tail area if it's caused by the ujoint failure.

My gosh, I am exhausted. The new heads and cam are in, degreed and set. The new TH400 is in and the new driveshaft has already been shortened and re-yoked and is in the car. Greg Merrick came down this morning and has been a life saver on this.
After Pinks is over, I will start a new thread about the race, events, and most importantly who to thank. I can only say that whatever happens, if it wasn't for the extreme kindness and generosity of Greg Merrick, Steve Hodge, and Michael Roberts, my Pinks quest and season were over. I had already arranged with Bandimere for a possible replacement (either Greg and his wife Trisa, or Steve Hodge) to take my place. Not to sound all mushy but I will be forever greatful for them and my wife. Today was my (gasp) 40th b-day, my wife Theresa and I were going out to dinner. Instead, I raded a Taco Bell and we had Taco Fest at the Hudsons!! As for whats left, we need to put the radiator back in, finish hooking up the headers, install the fuel induction system, torque converter bolts, dipstick, and fluids fluids fluids. Thanks for reading!!

Got her all done and loaded, still a couple of bugs to work out. I don't like going to a race in this...but I'm thrilled to be going and playing!
Huge thanks again to Mr. Greg Merrick who stayed the night last night in in helping me with this venture. P.S. The man can cook too...

Well, I just got home and I'm pooped. They picked a low 11 field. Just like two years ago in Bandimere, there is drama that should make for entertaining tv. Several cars selected in the field of 32 didn't have rollbars...oops...
Considering the altitude of 5300 feet, there were alot of fast cars. The entire quick 8 field were in the 7's As for my performance, I'm thrilled to have made it there considering a week ago my car was rather broke. Heck, 13 hours earlier I was breaking in the cam in the driveway with no trans linkage as the TH350 non-adj cable was about two inches too short. I wanted to let the motor cool while I made a run to Lowes to the hardware section to do more inventing. Anyway, the car started to sputter asnd wouldn't go above 5100 RPM. So I had a great 60 ft time with the wheels coming up and a 14 second timeslip. Poor Greg apparently caught whatever virus I had on Thursday and he was incompassitated for today (Sorry Greg). So he's doig the best he can playing phone tech while I'm in the pits with everybody running their cars. I discovered with the timing light that the ignition advanced a good 6 degrees which says I didn't get the distributor tightened down. I really hoped/thought that was the problem so I fixed that and made a jet/spring adj. The car lost just a little in the 60 ft but picked up et & speed and hit a roaring earth shaking 5200 RPM which ended my day. I'll check it in the next few days but the ignition is acting similar to how it previously acted when the unilite module was going bad (Mallory Comp 9000) though I'm not positive. Loosing all that testing time to weather, breakage, and bad luck caught up to me but...what do ya do and that's racing. I saw three other Pontiac powered Pontiacs, none made the cut. I only saw one late model GTO in the field of 32 but there were 2-3 Subaru's...
