I drive my 05 GTO most everyday and when I park even if it's at the far end of a parking lot I always take 2 spots with the car angled at a 45. If it's a smaller lot I try for an end spot and offset park in the last space so I'm barely on the asphalt. Still not fool proof but I have only 1 dent in 5 years.

There was an article in one of the hot rod mags I believe it was back in the 70s that said to use a tube of foam pipe insulation and run a wooden rod through it and suspend it from the window edge with cord to protect the sides of the car from morons and long doors. I was thinking a round curtain rod might be better so it could be collapsed to store in the trunk and the pipe insulation could be folded in half. I never tried it but an oversize removable body molding like this would hopefully help somewhat. Kind of a pain to use each time you park but still a lot less labor intensive than removing dents and refinishing scratches.

This reminds me of the commercial I've seen I believe it was on the speed channel where a guy parks his pride and joy at the far end of a parking lot and as he walks toward the store in a deserted parking lot and just before he reaches the store a clapped out SW roars to the far end of the lot and parks right next to his car. When he returns to his car there isn't even enough room to open the door on the drivers side, yep that's pretty much how it works in my experiences too. My wife says they want to park next to something to make their car look better but actually parking a beater next to a nice car just makes theirs look that much worse...............................

Years ago, a summer down-pour started just as I parked in the lot of a big mall. While I was sitting in the car waiting for the rain to let up, some girl and her friend pulled up next to me. She swung her door open hard and nailed my car. She gave it quick glance, then ran off through the rain. I waited for the rain to slow down, getting more PO'd every minute I sat there.

When I got out, I found that the dent wasn't as bad as I anticipated, saved somewhat by the vinyl trim strip down the side. But at this point, I was over the edge. I looked at the car, a Cadillac obviously belonging to Daddy, and noticed immediately that it had those lovely wire-wheel hubcaps, the ones with the security locks built into them. Without a second thought, I backed up to the closest wheel and mule-kicked that sucker outside-in. I was wearing boots at the time, so I avoided a trip to the ER. I admired my work for a moment before heading inside, wondering how sweet-pea was going to explain the damage to Dad. I smiled....

I always got to work early and parked as close as possible against the curb leaving
major distance to the next spot.

Four days in a row some dick in a brand new -small- yellow sports car pulled in and
swung his door FULL open with his foot and smacked my door (I dont know how his
small door reached that far). Gave me a dirty snarl when I looked over from the radio
to see what the noise was. The 2nd day I watched and saw - he turned in the seat
and kicked his door open.

The 3rd day, after the same foot kick bang and dirty look 3 times, I had had enuf
and gave his car a set of key scratches taillight to headlight as I walked in to work.

4th day after bang #4 (and same effing dirty look again) I did the same. I dont know
where he parked on day 5 but it wasnt near me!!! Never saw the car again.

If the wind blows your door into me I can accept an accident (it will help if you look
a little apologetic NOT defiant and/or nasty). An intentional smack AND defiance will
get you my wrath!! Certainly if repeated. Sorryboutthat.

62, it's too bad you weren't able to give his door a good kick to close it.... hopefully with his leg still hanging out. A "Gee but that was an awful gust of wind!" type of kick.

Back in the late 80s out west I had pulled into one of the big truckstops to grab a bite to eat. Spot to my right was empty and another big rig pulled in to it. The driver was sitting there doing his logbook and this big fat fool came up just a bitchin and moanin about him taking his parking spot. Driver said he didn't see any truck waiting to pull in. Fat boy really got PO'd and said his truck was at the fuel pumps and to get out of his spot or he'd kick a$$. Driver next to said ok and gave his door a good hard kick that caught fat boy right in the kisser. He went down but got up an ran off. A little while later Securuity came over to see what the ruckus was about and asked what happened. Driver next to me said a gust of wind came up and he couldn't grab the door fast enough and it caught a guy in the face. Security looked like the didn't believe it and ask me what happened. All I said was he's right, it was good gust of wind like one of those dirt devils that took the door and some guy was standin there and got it right in the face. Security took off and in about 5 minutes we did too... didn't look like such a good place to eat after all. True story.

I pulled into a bank with my mothers' car(I was about 17 or 18). I was sitting in it with a girl I worked with and this old man and his wife pulled on the side of us. The parking lot lines were the double lines but boxed in(almost look like a bracket). He got out and slammed his driver door against my passenger door and walked away running his mouth, even though he parked in the middle of the double line. I got pissed off and opened my door and smashed it repeatedly against his door and left. A couple hours later a city cop came up and said a cop from that town wanted me to go by the station. I went with my father and the cop started reaming me out. I said look, I parked in the lines he parked over it and smashed my door and was swearing at me. The cop said I was lying that there were no double lines there and he knew the old man since he was little and wasn't like that. My father said I wasn't like that either. He said we'd see if the old man wanted to press charges. So we left, went to the parking lot so my father could see the double lines. Then went to his friends auto body garage and got a signed paper from him saying that my door couldn't have damaged the other guys the way he said it did. My father called the cop and let him know what we did and that we took pics in the lot the cop said there weren't double lines in. We never heard back...

Another time I was in an afterhours club. Came out and my 86 or so Buick LeSabre(that was in PERFECT shape) looked funny as I walked up the street. Got to it, the side was all smashed in and the bumper was sticking out. Whoever hit it took off. I hope they were in a Civic or something like that, because if my car looked the way it did I guarantee theirs looks WAY worse. But yes, I was extrememly p!ssed.

Been thinking about whether or not to share this because I'm not overly proud of it.

Just painted my 78 K20, all new metal, southern bed, spent a ton of time gettin it right, body off, new chassis parts, springs ect. Woman pulls in and slams a door into the side of it while I'm sitting in it chipped the paint dinked a door, looks in the truck at me and says it's just and old truck and walked off.

I sat there a couple mins and my blood pressure when thru the roof. when I left that car didn't have a straight panel on it and had it's just a car scraped into the metal on the roof.

I was severly pissed and that car was totalled.

Had to straighten the door and repaint it.

Mike

Just back from my honeymoon in a brand new '78 Firebird still on 10 day plates. Guy backs a dodge power wagon into it. My Mother in law had to restrain me when it said "It's just a car, nuts and bolts"

Was in the hospital parking lot. Women pulls in in a big old junky Buick. Opens her door into me and caves my door in. (Accord) She gives me false contact info. I tracked her down through the Police and sent her the bill. Couple of days later I get an envelope in the mail from her. I open it thinking it's a check. Nope. A flyer on how God could help me. And that's all I ever got.

Ran into Macdonalds to grab a cup of coffee. In there 2 minutes. I come out and some idiot had driven up on the bumper of yet another brand new car. I backed up and got out and gave his car a wail of a kick. Ooops - car alarm!

Buddy of mine had a similar situation with his nice car. Same story right down to the Jesus saves letter.

Out for a trip to the bar in his woodhauler, Mid 70's Ton 4x4 lifted, winch, home made bumper with a killer push guard.

Low and behold what do we see on the way to the watering hole? Same old Lincoln that had hit his car. It was never the same after that. Pushed it across the parking lot into a pair of rolling dumpsters and up onto a stack of Railroad ties.

Never heard a word about it. Truck was unscathed.

Almost traded door paint with a Durango tonight. Im sitting at a light, RH lane. Lexus LS430 next to me. Behind the 430 is a Durango which I wasn't paying no mind to.
All of us have V8's.

Up ahead 1/4 mile my lane squeezes over to the left into one lane.
Light turns green, 430 zooms off thinking I'm going to try and beat him.

I thought, "cool, let him go" and gave me the chance to speed up, then merge over.
But no! The friggen Durango is comming up fast and wants to play drag race, tag, whatever.
So I stay with him, hammer down. Then slowly start over to his lane with him besides me.

I finally let off and let him go, but followed a we bit close for a while. Isn't this road rage a little fun sometimes?

All of this talk reminded me of a funny thing I saw around 1983(??).

Im sitting in my car waiting for another rider. next row over I see an old pinto with
someone on both sides parked so close that the guy cannot get his door open far
enuf to get in. He does manage to reach in and roll down the passenger window.
Climbs up onto the roof of the car on that side and slides down into his car. Backs
out and stops. Gets out and loosens the valve core on front and back tires of both
cars, leaving each with two flats. Drives off with a big grin and I give him a huge
thumbs up.

No permanent damage to anyone but two guys are gonna have to call someone
for air ($$).

A few years ago now, wifey got a brand new little Peugeot 206. Didn't have the car even 1 week when she comes home fuming. I go out to have a look and there's this long 6" vertical ding in the door. OK, works out she went shopping parked it & when she got back there it was. This was no ordinary, oops the door slipped, to cause this damage, someone meant it. Maybe they didn't like Peugeots/the French!!!!
The kicker is that they hit it so hard the set the alarm off. (I could tell by the flashing LED on the dash that signifies that the alarm was activated). When I mention this to the wife she says, oh yeh I did hear someone's alarm go off while in the shop but didn't think anything of it. Doh, perfect chance to catch the guy gone. Anyway thank God for the paintless repair guy, $100 bucks later you couldn't tell and this was on black car as well. Wasn't there for the repair but am amazed how they can remove dents without damaging the paint.

I work at a GM dealer in the body shop so last week I took my T-37 to work and parked in the back where I can also watch my car all day and keep it away from any customers.

So im working away and I hear tires peel out and I look out the door and here is this idiot in a beat up F-150 we got in on trade peeling out toward's my car and slamming on the brakes. He did this twice and stopped very close to my car. I couldn't beleive he had the nerve to do this, had that piece of junks brake lines blew or he slipped off the brake pedal he would had smashed the hole driver's side of my car. He also had the nerve to walk through the body shop when he was done showing off,I looked at him and asked if he had a death wish. Later that day I saw him an a another car parked right next to mine turning on the winshield washer squirters and driving away. Thats the last time I will ever drive that car to work! Some people are real idiots!

That's why it's best to keep quiet unless you're about to move your car away for good and remain unknown. You could piss off someone enough that they'd still do something to your daily driver.

I've heard too many stories where someone parked at an angle in two spaces to come back to some kind of damage. It's hard to be low-key in a nice car, but drawing any attention can be be bad with the scum we share air with.

The idea posted earlier of having some kind of padded rod suspended from the window IMO is just asking for some mean person to come do something.

Sometimes I think I am wacko over my cars, but at the same time, if I witnessed someone do damage to a stranger's ordinary car, it would infuriate me, too. It still comes down to right and wrong. If people were caught, had something beat out of them, it would fix some of society's problems. Unfortunately, of all the stories posted in this thread where someone retaliated, if they were caught (and we live in Video Surveillance World these days), they would be thoroughly punished while the one who incited the incident would get slapped on the wrist.

Rob, was anyone around, or cameras? If not I think I would have adjusted that Mustang's door so it would open all the way to the front fender.

I wonder if just making a set of door guards would work. Perhaps use some off another car, paint them to match the body. Something small but useful. It might still look goofy but a dented door looks goofier.
