Years ago, there was a guy running around Naples with a '72 GTO Convertible. He thought it was real. It was actually a pretty nice car.

Was it triple black? I had a buddy moved to Fla from here that had a GTO conv clone. His license plate said "SSLICK"

I think it comes down to personal taste. Lets face it. Some peoples taste should be left in a pig pen and some are so uptight, that their panty is showing through their jeans.
For the most part, if you are going aftermarket do the damn car justice and do it with style and purpose. If you are going original, do it as best you can with correct parts. Mixing the two is a retards game of guess which shell holds the goose egg.

I don't really have any car peeves. But those creepy crybaby dolls at all the shows freak me out.
I could say my one peeve would be every Lemans owner seems to be making their car into a GTO.

These are all great, thank you guys.
And again, anyone can personalize their car how they want (heck, I did too), but it's the high priced Pontiacs that are sold for big dollars at auctions, and the ad state they're all "correct" when there's an obvious snafu, like Rally II's on a 65 GTO. We've probably all heard people on cruise nights ask, "Is that right? Did they make them like that?" So this is just a list of the more obvious things that we see REPEATEDLY at shows and cruise nights. Hell, I've done that too with makes I'm not familiar with, like 71-up Mopars, wondering if the engine I'm looking at is factory or transplanted. And I'll throw another one it: black hood scoop inserts on 67-69 Birds, or 68-72 non-Judge GTO's. Nothing wrong with that (I personally like them), just not something the factory did.

How about 8-lugs on a '65 GTO?
I saw that years ago, and didn't know any better. Thought it looked pretty cool, though. |

I think my teacher talked about when he had a GTO he added 8-lugs to it. I wonder what a '68 would look like with them on though...

What about "dealer installed" options on restored cars? Any for or against those?

66GTO Jim, well put, that's exactly why I keep reminding people in this thread this is not about things people do to CUSTOMIZE their cars, this is about the things that we see time and again on HIGH DOLLAR RESTORATIONS that are incorrect. As someone said in an earlier post, if you tell a lie enough times, some people begin to think it's the truth.
So that's all I'm looking for, those instances where megabucks are spent restoring a car to FACTORY CORRECT, yet these resto shops keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Then these cars appear at Mecum, Barrett-Jackson, a museum (like Volo) with descriptions stating it's a meticulous nut-and-bolt resto, everything is correct, but it's a 1968 GTO with a Judge wing. Just trying to keep the air clear, preserve some history, and educate those that may not be aware that when you see a team photo of the Denver Broncos, and one guy is wearing a Green Bay Packer uniform, that's not correct. If you staged the photo and know it's wrong, not a problem. Modifications and personalization to your own car are NOT an issue here.

Try using one for target practice. It is great fun, although people may wonder about you.

My biggest pet peeve has to be when steel wheels are incorrectly painted body color with poverty caps on mid 60's Pontiacs.
Example: Iris Mist car with Iris Mist painted wheels (or the worst - white wheels on a white car). There were only a few wheel colors available each year and only cars that were painted these colors received body colored wheels. |

I also don't care for:
Buick style 400-4, 455-4 air cleaner decals, especially the Ram Air ones on early GTO's Painted rear bumpers Hurst T-handles on Dual gate shifters Engines and engine compartments painted black, including master cylinders, lids, etc Missing rocker chrome Cloned Judges with stripes/emblems in the wrong place. Look at a picture people Die cast emblems in the wrong place, too high, too low Hood tachs in the wrong spot, too close to the center, etc Ghetto style 22" rims on a classic car Exhaust exiting in front of the rear wheels Consoles that have been hacked for gauges, a tach, A-pillars that have gauges, tachs, shift lights, on them Hood pins and bondo'ed or riveted on hood scoops Digital gauges/tachs hacked into a dash to fill a missing gauge pod RACING STRIPES ON PONTIACS!!! Unless it's a Judge or 69 TA, it doesn't belong there! Mega shifters on top of an original auto console 'Fear This' stickers

I don't know about the dealer installed stuff unless you have the paperwork to back it up. Otherwise "you are your own dealer" and can add whatever you want it would seem.

Engines in stock restored Pontiacs painted the wrong color for the year.
Show cars displayed with too many stuffed animals or dolls.
