What gets my goat is when they lower prices for one day, and then raise them the next to even higher prices. Their 'screwing with your head medicine' isn't nice at all.

Exactly, But the more everything cost the more money they can make on taxes.

Gary, diesel up here is about 1.18/litre, been there for about 3 months. Gas just surpassed it in the last couple of weeks. Funny thing when I was a kid and made 50 bucks a week gas was 80 cents a gallon. Now 30+ years later making 2k a week and gas 5 bucks a gallon and like you I'm pissed. Those old pontiacs got the same gas mileage back then as they do now. I read a paper one time that a loaf of bread costs less now in comparison to your overall income than in the 60's. Paper stated if you asked the average person if they would like everything price frozen for say 30 years, the overwhelming majority would vote no. Yet only a few years down the road they would complain that their standard of living went down. Human nature I guess.

That's not quite true either, but you are close. State and Federal road tax on a gallon of gas stays the same. It's the State's sales tax the reaps them more money, which is on top of the standard State and Federal road tax. Kinda like double dipping for the States. Same as what everyone else is doing to us all with surcharges.

I didn't know the road tax stayed the same but I meant if the price of everything (clothing, food etc as mentioned) goes up then they make more off taxes of those products
I think a few years ago I read that tax on a gallon of gas was $.36 a gallon? Is that right? I believe at the time I figured it at about 17%. I thought that was BS but if the tax on a gallon is still 36 cents or so that's not such a bad deal at only about 10%

Not sure PH but the tax is different in each state. Part of the reason for differences in total cost. As for State sales tax I think that it's figured in even tho you don't see it added on at the counter when you pay for it.
Ed, diesel here is still higher here than Premium gas. Last I saw the other day it was 3.599 in New Jersey and 3.899 here in Delaware. Wait till it hits us in the grocery stores. If you think it's sad the elderly are eating canned cat and dog food, the rest of us will be too.... very soon. My wife saw a little ol lady in line with some cans of cat and dog food a while back. She asked her what she had for pets. Her reply... 'I don't have any pets. I like a little variety'.

Try the spill and subsequent moratorium. No permits have been issued since then for off shore drilling. Oil prices have been steadily going up since the spill. They dropped from 140 to under 40 after Bush AND congress opened up SOME of the gulf then the BP spill, Moratorium and up to 100 she goes. The middle east didn't help either. Where are all the libs screaming Bush's fault because he's an oil man? Why aren't they saying the same about ofrauda? After all if Bush can make oil go out of sight why can't ofrauda do the same?

Sleepy, he doesn't want to.
Coach, congress has nothing to do with any of it. They only approve spending that then goes through the senate and then is approved or vetoed by his highness. |
