It should be a great game today in Orchard Park, NY. World Junior Hockey being played outdoors at New Era Field, home of the Bills. For a lot of these players, a last stop before going into the NHL.
Two hockey powers battling it out on a frigid winter's day, possibly some snow. An expected attendance of 40,000 people. It doesn't get any better than that. The US team is favoured this year and they won it all last year. We let the US win every once in a while to keep it interesting. |

Not bad. How'd the tournament work out for you guys? .We had a relative bunch of nobody's against heavily favoured teams like the USA and Sweden that were loaded with elite top NHL prospects.
Like I said... |

Forecast for New Year's Day for Louisville is a high of 18 degrees and a low of 4 degrees. That means it will be 14-15 and 0 to -1 out here. Definitely a good day to say INDOORS! On the plus side, it will take care of the mosquito and tick populations which have been nearly unbearable due to the warmer than normal winters we've had the last couple of years.

Here in Green Bay all of the talk is about the 50th anniversary of the "Ice Bowl", Dallas vs Packers for the NFL championship. The winner got to play in the first super bowl even though it wasn't called that ye. It was -13 at the kick-off and dropping. Even though the stadium held less than 50,000 at the time there are a half million people who swear they were there.
Not quite that cold this year but cold enough. -6 over night and slightly above zero during the day and continuing all week. My new (to me) convertible in the garage will have to stay there for a while. When I first saw this thread I thought the subject was going to be catchy weather phrases. On that note it is "cold enough here to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!"

2 here in New Castle right now. Windchill is around -6.
For those of you up near Mt. Washington in NH... you can have it. I read Friday night was to hit -40 with a possible windchill of -100. I've seen -83 for a windchill up in the Massena, NY area but -100 is unreal.

Mt. Washington surprisingly has weather that rivals some of the worlds most extreme locations both in temperature & wind.
Prior to 1996, Mt. Washington had the highest recorded wind speed on the planet at 231 mph, it's now in second place resting behind Barrow Island, Australia's 253 record mph during Typhoon Olivia. The weather stations sits at a low elevation of only 6,288.2 ft above sea level.

I've been by Mt. Washington many times.... winter an summer. It's not the most habitable spot on the east coast in the winter. I could never comprehend the reason why anyone would want to go to the top during the winter months.... other than those that work up there and get paid to be there. I've been told workers are there 24/7 for at least 30 days at a time. Not sure if it's still that way or not.
I've stayed in Gorham, NH a few times in the dead of winter and had to have the truck jump started all but a couple of times. Super cold weather up there.... not counting the windchill. ![]()
