My observation is that the whole "50s, 60's, 70's, 80's" decades were actually skewed about 5 years later than normally presented - at least here in the midwest.

In the South, it took until the 70s for the long hair thing to kick in.

The early 60's were about crew cuts, penny loafers, chino pants, white socks, going to church every Sunday, 4 channels on the TV, no cell phones/computers.video games, family dinners every night.

It is really striking how different things are today, and not always for the better.

The first picture is of my Dad on the bike back when he was 19, that would have been around 1944 or so.
The bike was built in the twenties by Schwinn, but marketed by B.F.Goodrich, so it has the B.F.Goodrich nameplate on the front. It came to our family in the early forties, and was used by my great aunt to get back and forth to work at Buick during WWII. (about 10 miles) It came to my Dad's family specifically when my great-aunt got permission to purchase an old model T to drive back and forth from Clio to Flint. The picture was taken before My Dad rode it from Clio to Mackinaw and back one summer. (over 300 miles each way.)
The second picture was taken after I restored the bike in 1992. The girls in the basket are now 21, 23, and 25.

Here is my first nice GTO. Bought it summer 1977 , right before my senior year in high school, with an insurance settlement when someone totaled my 65 GTO conv. Got it from the original owner, a gal, who special ordered it in Georgia for around $2,OOO. Cardinal Red, black int 455HO WW5, M 22 side stripes, a/c, am fm st. Got it with 6O,OOO and sold it just after it flipped the odometer over when I was 21. In the 3 to 4 years I owned it, rebuilt the 455HO, swapped in an 4OOthm and drove it everywhere. When I sold it, I reinstalled the M22 and repainted it as shown. Even in 1981, the side stripes were already discontinued from the dealer. This pic was taken in 1981 right about the time I sold it for about $4,OOO . I had the original window sticker she gave me, I was smart enough to save a copy when i sold it. Not sure where the car is now. it was in Tucson the last 25 plus years, may still be there.

All that talk about the "new" Daytona/Superbird in Mike Nouns thread reminded me of this piccie. Look at the paint!! Are these new? It looks like they've been sitting for years.

The second car carrier shot ties in with Pontiacs, PYer Keith Seymore and his old Uncle (IIRC) Joe. The truck in the 1968 ad is owned by FJ Boutell, a company that Keith's Uncle helped start up and drive for, and, a useless bit of trivia, is that the 70 Judge TV ad (where the drivers unload the Judge to take for a private test drive) features a FJ Boutell car carrier as well.

Here's a few more of the 1969 Daytona.

Picture a regular suburb subdivision street (like in the Wonder Years TV show), driveways filled with 4-door Fords, conservative station wagons, the occasional 2-door Lemans or Chevelle, maybe a kid with a tape stripe down the hood of his 65 Corvair. Two neighbors are talking about how they think the Big 3 are getting carried away with bright paint jobs, mag wheels, and promoting racing.

And then they see you coming down the street in the new Dodge you just bought.

1969-1970 was simply the coolest period in American automotive history. Many people say 1970 was the pinnacle, and indeed it was from a horsepower/cubic inch standpoint, but I believe 1969 was wilder and more shocking.
