I can drive the car when ever I want, I cover up the lights and decals which say "Not in Service." That way i cover the technicalities. Legally by law I am allowed to drive it underneath Illinois Vehicle code, however It just takes one cop who is haveing a bad day to see your car says police, sheriff, state police whatever and nick you for Impersonation of a Police officer.

The only times i drive uncovered like in my avatar is at shows or parades.

I was in ROTC, but I gave it up because the CO was being a dick. So Im a MP sergeant now, but im still planning on getting a bar one of these days

That means that in a couple of days, I will be in the best possible position to assess which options this car has (i.e. LOOKING at it with my own two eyes). My pics will hopefully be detailed enough so that you will be able to spot what options she's got, and which ones she's lacking.

How does "U.S.S. Thunderthighs" sound for a name? And what rank do you have to be to drive a ship this big?

Hey guys, I'm back - and I brought a car with me!

No pics, yet. Sorry. Not enough time. I want to give it a good wash etc. and clean here and there before taking pics. I'll post them in a few days, however.

As for the car...
59,000 total actual miles. 56,000 miles was put on the car the first 13 years; the remaining 3,000+ miles over the next 20 years. It was a second car, and the widow was 70 years old when her husband died. She drove the car once a month, and the miles obviously did NOT add up much! Tires with 95% tread. 1000 CCA battery under 2 years old. Engine smooth and strong; transmission shifts wonderfully; everything driving-wise real nice and smooth.

Color appears to be Mesa tan. I didn't care for it at first, but I like it better now. For the most part, the paint looks pretty nice. There are quite a few small rock chips that show on close inspection, however. I'm fine with it, but people who really cared about appearances would want a repaint. The white vinyl top is in excellent condition, though I will need tips on cleaning the pebbly surface.

The interior is a very light gray or off-white. It is cloth, with no tears or bad springs. Very comfortable. No significant stains to worry about. The headliner is excellent.

Options are: power steering/brakes/driver seat/windows/door locks; A/C; AM/FM stereo; cruise control; rear defrost. There are three cigarette lighters (with 1 on each of the front bucket seats).

I have tested everything but the cruise control. Everything works fine.

The engine compartment is nothing to brag about (which was a little disappointing for a car with such low mileage). I'll need to do a little detailing before I take a pic. But it will never win a "loveliest engine" award. Still, it seems to do what engines are supposed to do quite well. The car is quite powerful at any speed/rev range.

I paid a total of about $410 (with the $10 being for 3 sodas). We'd agreed on $500, but John insisted on paying me $100 for a sport touring bike I gave (or rather would have willingly given) his grandson. John bought a '25 Dodge sedan which we towed up; and I drove back a Dodge Magnum pickup for a woman who paid for the privilege. John towed the Grand Ville back on a flatbed trailer. We drove the 2200 total miles in 4 days, and stayed one day in Walla Walla. I actually enjoyed seeing the country, as I'd never been that route (we went up eastern California, through Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and eastern Washington).

Sorry for the lack of pics. I'll have some soon. The car won't win any shows, but overall it's clean and seems to be in good running order. The car isn't in QUITE as nice of condition as I'd built it up in my head, but it is BEAUTIFUL for the price. Many times I have spent $400 more foolishly.

Anycar that runs/drives well for that kinda $$ is a deal. I recently helped a realitive look at cars, and I couldnt believe the major pieces of crap
people wanted $1,200 for. Sounds like you got a hellova deal.

Glad to hear the car made it back well! Yeah, like Brad said, this sounds like a steal for this car. My 73' had 89K when I bought it, but it isn't a showcar and never will be. It is an all-original car though in good shape and like yours, I would rather have an all-original car in "good" condition, than one in "excellent" that has been completely restored. Sounds strange, but thats the way I am. I paid $1000 for my Grand Ville and it sounds like it is not as original/nice as yours, as my seats have been recovered for some reason (I still do not know why, as the original material is still under and appears to be good and it was a garaged car). I also have a couple of small rust spots (one on the lower LF fender and a little around the rear wheel well. But like someone mentioned, many of these cars are now totally trashed and even finding one in good shape is a task these days. My engine bay is all-original, right down to the dirt... I do not think it has ever been cleaned. I have been meaning to, but never have. Its very dusty and the high southeastern humidity, has some surface rust under there... I really need to detail it some.

OPTIONS - WOW, it sounds like a highly optioned car. I see several options that my car lacks, such as FM radio, power seat, cruise control and rear defog. Rear defog was mostly a "northern" option, so if you get an original southern car with it, then it is very rare. A/C - is the the auto-climate control, or standard 4-season? I did not see tilt wheel listed on your list, which is a more common option... does yours have that? You said "bucket seats". Sounds like you have the split 60-40 split back bench seat - which in itself is another option. Since you have the lighters on the back of the front seat - sounds like you have the "Custom" option, which my car also has. It should also have cut-pile carpeting, color-keyed seat belts, front seat back handle and I think lower door courtesy lights were also part of that as well, as my car also has those.

Yes, please post the photos when you can... I think everyone is anxious to see it.

Now..... enjoy it. (and feed it). They like lotsa gas.

Okay... I have some pics of the interior. I want to at least wash the beast before I post any of the body.

Yeah, you guys are right. I DO have the tilt wheel option, and now that you describe it as 60/40, that is clearly what I have. I don't know about which AC I have. The control panel lists "A/C, vent, heat, bi-level, defrost," with a slide lever that goes from cold to hot. Hopefully the pic is detailed enough for you to see.

I can honestly say that the more I look at this car, the more I like it. I went to Sam's and Wal Mart in it tonight, and as I was walking out a car caught my eye. I thought, "That's a real pretty car." It turned out to be MY car. The more distant view, the angle, and the parking lot lighting caused it to look just different enough that I didn't recognize my own car. It looked, well, hot. Graceful and streamlined, with a low profile.

The car accelerates like a freight train; it just keeps going faster and faster, with barely perceptible "kickdown" points. Something else I can't help but like: it doesn't leak at ALL. I dare say the engine may well be stronger than my U.S. model 6.9, even though it does lack ONE option: dual exhaust (Dang!). Another thing I like is that the parking brake locks that big car in position with virtually no give at all. And that big monster radiator keeps the engine so cool it's unreal. She fires right up and runs without hesitation as soon as I turn the key.

I'll have exterior pics in a couple of days. If I don't get the car washed, I'll just break down and take some pics anyway.

One thing is for sure: this Grand Ville is NOT a piece of crap. It has a few blemishes, but it is still a pretty car.

I didn't get a "hell of a deal" as much as a gracious gift from a close friend. If I had bought it from some stranger, it would have been a steal/deal. John could have sold it for more with a lot less hassle, but he preferred to let a friend have it at (less than) his cost. Anyone who doesn't admire John is an idiot and an awful judge of character.

As a postscript to soon2b2ltmp, that is interesting about your cruiser. And good luck with your pursuit of "O-grade" status. Officers who were formerly NCOs are rarely ever anything but excellent leaders.

From the interior it looks like it was garaged. Cars that were owned by elderly people have a much easier life.

I like it! The interior looks real nice, and from the limited views in the pictures the exterior looks pretty good, too. The '71 Catalina I used to own had the same color interior although it wasn't nearly as fancy as your car.

Around here there are a few shops that specialize in touching up rock chips and scratches on cars that don't need a full repaint, if you check around you may find a similar shop or two in your area. Depending on how bad the gravel rash is, it may be worth the money. Or, if you feel adventurous you could get some paint mixed up to match and fill them in yourself with an artist's brush.

Wow, nice. Nice indeed. The interior looks beautiful and from what I can tell, the exterior looks nice as well. You will be amazed at what a good cleaning/buffing/waxing will do.

Yeah, I noticed the tilt wheel at once. Also, after reviewing the photos, I can tell you that you have the standard 4-season A/C, rather that the optional auto-climate control. Maybe a good thing, because sometimes the auto-climate can be troublesome.

Also too, yep, it has the optional split bench seat and it also looks to have the "Custom" option.

The more I look at those seats, I wish mine had of not been recovered. Those are the seats like mine has/had. In fact, I think my interior is the exact same color schemes as yours. I think my brown may be a little darker however, but I am not sure... it may just be the photo. I do not know why my seats were recovered.

Your power seat, cruise control, rear defog and FM radio are slightly rare (rarer) options and are a nice touch. Mine lacks all of those. But, the folks that bought my car new really did not need those options. There were few FM radio stations here back then and they never drove on the highway, so no cruise was needed and being a southern car, it was no surprise that it lacked rear defog. There was a guy here locally that had a 72' Electra with the rare rear window defrost, which had the wires in the rear window, like you see on the more later model cars. Back then, it was quite rare and I am not even sure if this option was available on the Pontiacs or not in 1971-73.

Yeah, $400 for this car, you are very fortunate and I would be highly "thanking" this friend to whom lead to you this deal- sounds like a good one... but it sounds like you already have and are very thankful.

I am wondering now - does it have the standard hubcaps, optional "deluxe finned" hubcaps, or the optional "rally" wheels? The last GV I saw this color had the "wheels". I will be able to see more about the exterior options when you get to post the photos..... did you notice if it has the cornering light option? If so, you will have a big rectangular light on the front fender, between the front fenderwell and the bumper.

For comparison, here is a photo of my instrument panel... do they look the same color to you?
Sorry- mine is low quality, I have not taken one in awhile.
This was taken in winter of 2005 I think:

Also taken the same time- exterior when I had the "standard" wheelcovers... I have since added the "deluxe finned" covers.

For comparison, here is a ragged out, but very high optioned Grand Ville - note the climate control A/C, and gauge package:

Finally, a 73' Grand Ville without tilt:

I'll start by posting a few exterior pics. I didn't get a chance to really go to town rubbing and polishing, but I did get a wash in. I doubt I would get the whole car done this weekend, so I might as well let you gander at her "as is."

I DID go ahead and use rubbing compound and polishing compound on a couple spots. The rock chips, of course, remain, but most of the discolorations seem to vanish easily. The paint is overall in very good condition, with the gloss and color remaining. A touch up is all I would do.

I'm guessing it has the "optional finned" hubcaps Tennesseestorm mentioned.

I'll tell you what: "automatic climate control" is NOT a good phrase in my book, as I have heard a lot of bad news from many people who have had them (including me in my Mercedes). Standard AC/heat/defrost/bi-level is plenty good for me. Give me what works, not what works great for a little while.

I'm not sure whether I have the cornering lights you describe or not. Hopefully today's pics will clear that up.

It's hard to tell whether our instrument panels are the same color or not. My pics will increase in size if you click on them. They DO appear similar to me, though. And the door interiors look identical.

Stuart's idea about "rock chip" specialists is a good one. I have tried to fix my own chips before and failed.... horribly.

This car was never technically "garaged," but it was in a large covered car port all its life. The desert climate of southeastern Washington seems pretty good for cars: it snows a couple times a year, but doesn't stick long enough to justify salt. At the same time, it doesn't get too hot/sunny. And it is several hundred miles away from the ocean. I haven't seen any real sign of rust on the car at all.

When the old widow sold her home (and her car with it), she was 90 years old. She was 70 when her husband died. He was in his mid-50s when he bought the car new. Yeah, old folks DO a better job of having their cars maintained. They aren't willing to risk mechanical breakdowns as much as younger folk. I'm concerned about the fact that the car did a lot of sitting, but not about the possibility that it was ever driven in the high rpm range.

My friend John looked at this car as a comfortable, reliable car, but not as a "classic." He told me that he was really conflicted about selling the car, though; he liked it, but he didn't need it. I don't doubt that he offered the car to his daughter's family first; I'm fortunate that none of them wanted the car. I'm close enough to him that he thought of me next. As for Tennesseestorm's comment about him being a good friend: oh, yeah! I look up to him; he's one of my "heroes." You won't meet a man with a more excellent character.

I tend to take things as they are. If I could have picked my color, I would have wanted black. But, as I start to look at the color of what I've actually got, I adjust to it and become satisfied. I live in Palm Springs, anyway: the tan will be a lot cooler in the heat.

And if I join a forum like this one, I "catch" the enthusiasm of other members and begin to share it.

So far, the only thing I can possibly complain about re: this Grand Ville is that there is an occasional squeeky noise on the passenger front door when the window is rolled all the way up. There are a LOT of car-problems out there that I would LESS rather have.

I am rushing off to work, but the car looks excellent! I actually love that color. Yep, you are right, you have the optional "finned" hubcaps. Do you have the fenderskirts to it as well? I am guessing they are in the trunk or something? I know alot of people sometimes remove these.

Will post more later... gotta run.

Wow, I miss a few days on the computer...
The car looks great, is very well optioned, and I know what you mean about your friend, John. I have a friend just like him (we go back over 35yrs). The only things I would do is add an HEI distributor, or convert the point dist with a Pertronix kit, and add dual exhaust. The former will make it virtually maintenance-free, and the latter will add at least 25-50hp.
The finned wheel covers are one of the nicest looking hubcaps you could get. Ya gotta like the 4 ashtrays and 3 lighters, I've never smoked, but it sure is a "sign of the times" compared to today's "smokers package" option.
I drove the '76 Bonneville from Akron, OH to home 2 weeks ago today, about 325mi, with no problems. It is a uniquely optioned car......no Tilt, manual windows, or sport mirrors, but it has gauges, cruise, and Rally II wheels. It has the 400 2bbl and a fairly economical to drive back (even though we drove about half the way in an ice and snow storm). I'll post a few pics when I get it cleaned up.
Keep us posted on the GV, and please register it at the Grand Ville registry, I think it will be interesting to see how many are still around.

Oh, and the Toronado (car in my avatar) has the "Comfortron" auto A/C, it is ridiculously complex. I can't get it to function in any way.

Dave

Dave, my '76 Bonnie with a 400/2 occasionally would touch 20 mpg, and often could average 17. That was averaged on the odometers 2nd time around. If you can find one, a "economy guage" (aka vacuum guage) helped me get that.

Wow, that is an oddly optioned beast. Yeah, I would look forward to seeing it.

Auto-climate control.... I have it on my 1985 Mercedes and to my amazement, it still works perfectly. Strange.

I think my old 71' Toronado had it as well, but I think it also worked fine, but the car was only about "20" years old at the time, with 40K original miles. I MISS THAT CAR! Gave it to grandma, she let my aunt borrow it and she crashed it. They sold it to the junk yard, because of a dented fender/grill.... that was in 1992.

OK... I am back home from work and have had time to read more thoroughly. Now, I will add this to my above post after your photos.....

I looked at the photos and you do not have the cornering lights. The "ragged" out Grand Ville in the photo above does have them, as does the one that we showed that was in the movie "Seven Ups" that was trashed. They are just big white rectangular lights on the front of the front fenders that helped you see when you made a turn in the dark. Pretty neat optioned and I wish my 73' Grand Ville had them. My 89' Pontiac Grand Safari does have them. They were optional on ALL 71-76 GM full-size cars.... save for the Cadillac, in which they were standard and on the Chevrolet, where they were not even optional, not even on the Caprice- which was strange. Also on some Cadillacs/Buicks and other luxury makes as far back as the early to mid 60s. Chevrolet did not offer them until around the early 1980s. Maybe even as early as the 1977 redesign, but I have never seen a late 70s Caprice/Impala with them, but I have seen them on the later ones, because my old 85' Caprice Estate wagon had them.

Auto-climate can be troublesome... as mentioned, I am amazed that it still works fine on my 1985 Mercedes 380SE.

Yeah, I think our interiors are the same color. I am going to get better quality photos of the interior with my new digital camera and post... maybe then we/you can tell.

Very funny you mentioned that "squeak" on the passenger side front door with the window up, because I have (well, HAD) that exact same squeak when the window was up. When it did it- the weather was cold... it only did it in the winter, then oddly, it just went away all together... I have not heard it in over 2 years. Strange. Anyway, I think it was the glass rubbing on that metal clamp on the window weatherstrip.

I am wondering... how does it rate otherwise, in the "squeak and rattle" dept? I have an occasional rattle from the heat/AC control area... seems to be inside the dash - other that that, its solid, but I can hear the body "creak" sometimes if I get the car in an awkward position, like when in a bind and its hot or cold out.

My 69' Caprice is the winner though.... its 100% squeak/rattle/creak free. Its amazing. It seems to be a higher quality car than the Grand Ville. I think GM slipped down a bit with the 71' redesign, but I still love them. My 72' Buick Electra was pretty tight and rattle free as well.

It's hard to tell whether our instrument panels are the same color or not. My pics will increase in size if you click on them. They DO appear similar to me, though. And the door interiors look identical.

So far, the only thing I can possibly complain about re: this Grand Ville is that there is an occasional squeeky noise on the passenger front door when the window is rolled all the way up. There are a LOT of car-problems out there that I would LESS rather have.

I usually only get online in the evenings, but I was excited about the prospect of reading posts after "showing off" the Grand Ville.

Tennesseestorm, I'm just having that one squeek. I don't hear a peep anywhere else. What has thrilled me most thus far is that she is tight mechanically: no oil/trans/coolant/power steering leaks. The car is also quiet (other than that squeek) in terms of road noise. And the AM/FM sounds quite good through the speakers.

My 77 Mercedes HAD auto climate control until a few months ago, when the servo blew up. I lost over a gallon of coolant in about 20 seconds. Freaked me out. Right now I just have the system bypassed, but I'll have to do something (add a valve maybe?) to shut the heater off for the summer. The thing worked great until it exploded. The P.O. replaced the thing about five times at exorbitant cost each time. They were renowned for failing about every 3 years. No thanks.

BTW, you are 100% correct: I DO have the skirts, and They WERE in the trunk (along with a spare tire that has never seen asphalt and a few other items). I plan to put them on soon, but didn't want to put 'em on only to have to take them off again because of some unforeseen maintenance issue.

The color has grown on me, too, and I now have decided I like it. Black would have given it a more "macho" (mafioso?) look, but the yellow has a friendly charm to it. The paint seems too nice to do more than a touch up/detail.

Pontiacdaver,
I'll be sure to register it soon. I'll also seriously consider your improvement suggestions. When we drove in and I first saw the car, the first thing I checked was the exhaust - and was slightly bummed when I only saw one pipe. The car is plenty strong, but more IS better, right? It would also LOOK better with duals. I'll probably take a little time and look for a deal on a dual system. The distributor idea is a good one also.

Your comment about the finned hubs makes me remember that I need to go around with a rubber mallet and tap them on; I'd sure hate to go for a drive and find one missing.

Hey, 455 c.i. guys, a couple of questions.

What is the opening temp of the OEM thermostat? (So far I've seen 160, 180, 195, and 205). I prefer to get the one that God made for the car (i.e. OEM), as opposed to "performance."

Did the 455 take an 80 amp alternator, or a 55A model (I presume the former, given the size of the engine, but want to make sure).

Looking at the belts on the car, I see three: A/C, Power steering, and alternator. I'm seeing "AP" when I look at V-belts (V Belt; AP ; w/AC ; w/PS;Years: 1973-1974). What in the heck is "AP"?

Are platinum plugs a good idea or a bad idea (I see both platinum and copper, and wonder if the platinum would run too hot)?

Also, going to (or from) the heater core on the passenger side, there is some kind of temperature sensor or switch. Does anyone know what that unit is? Mine looks gnarly enough to consider replacing.

Fortunately, all the parts I've checked so far look pretty good. But I'd like to go ahead and get some parts - like an air cleaner intake hose - and take advantage of free shipping w/ a $50 order.

LOL. Yeah, I think everyone likes it! I know I do. As mentioned, I saw another GV that color, but it had the road wheels and I think these wheelcovers suit that color much better. As mentioned, I have these "finned" covers to, but I think I may switch back over awhile to my standard Grand Ville hubcaps, which look like the Catalina hubcaps, save for the center emblem on the Catalina is a Pontiac emblem and the Grand Ville has the "starburst" like is in the emblem on the "C" pillar. (BTW - my starburst inserts are missing on my car. I bought some replacements (from a 72' Grand Ville) and was going to use the centers from them, but could not bring myself to take them out).

We will look forward to the photos after the cleaning and reinstallation on the skirts. They are very easy to take on and off. I most always remove mine when I wash it, that way I can clean up in the wheelwells very well.

Good to hear about your Am-Fm sounding good. Mine is AM only, but we have some good AM stations here (mostly classic country, talk radios and gospel), so I have something to listen to when I drive it. I know where there is a local 73' Bonneville 4dr with an AM-FM radio and I was going to get it, but I wanted to keep my car original, so I passed on it. I may get it yet, if its an easy changeover. I know that I do not have the rear speakers option... only the one in the front dash panel (front, top and center). Still sounds good though. My 69' Caprice has AM-FM, which was a little rare for that year.

I think I know of that switch for the heat/AC you mention... I have no idea, but I would imagine that it would be impossible to get a replacement. If its working OK, I would not worry too much about it.

Speaking of engine bays... I got to take one of mine this evening and its horrible. I will post it soon. After you see mine, you will not mind posting yours. Mine still has the original dust since 1973 on it.

michaeld - I think 195 deg thermostat was the norm.
Good deals must be contageous on here, I found a rust free convertible sportscar that needs minor TLC (not a Pontiac) Keep thinking I could have it done within six years when the daughter starts driving.

455Grandville is correct about the temps on the thermostats, my 400 came with a 195 deg. thermostat.

My cat had an AM radio... (but now I got a working Police radio that works on recieve only)
