I have over 225K on two 1990s Tahoes. One had a new trans at 157K and later Idler/Pitman Arms.

I know this is not much but my wifes 04 Malibu just turned 160k. It is the 3.5 version and it still keeps on going. I hate that car. Hated it from day one but we've owned it since it had 14 miles on it. It keeps going and going. I thought for sure it would croak at 120-130. I want to get rid of it but it keeps going and going.

That's the reason it keeps on going.... because you hate it. And it's going to until you decide love it. LOL

Wink FYI...

When I worked for a GM dealer...it was advertised that ANY modern GM vehicle should be good for 250k miles with SCHEDULED ROUTINE MAINTENANCE...which has ALWAYS been the key! Japanese cars have nothing on the newer GM cars...or any other domestics for that matter. Maybe a different story thirty years ago. Look at all the Jap cars getting recalled these days! Saving Detroit was a GOOD thing...and I'll leave it at that. Ron

Keywords, Ron, it was ADVERTISED that any modern GM car SHOULD be good for 250k miles... that can be be easily interpreted many ways, but still nothing nothing but well meant company propaganda.

Ron, the "maybe 30 years ago", takes us back to 1981. You're inferring GM's problems is all from the lack of quality product they put out 30 years ago? GM built a lot of crap all the way through the 80's & up through the 90's. Sure there were a few bright spots, but a ton of junk product as well. My family used to buy all GM. My dad worked as a salaried GM employee for 36 years. As the 80's rolled in, he was out of Grand Prixs in '78 & out of TransAms upon the 3rd Gens being hatched, & into buying higher end personal luxury type GM vehicles. After retirement, he lived next door to & was good friends with our local GM plant manager (now retired). The GM influence was strong. My family, as a large extended family were diehard GM, & esp Pontiac, & Chevy pickup buyers.

I'll cut to the chase, a bunch of rapidly depreciating crap product slowly turned every one of our extended family off GM. Well over 60 adults + countless friends & other contacts. The fit & finish & the durability was not there. In our extended family, have three aunts & uncles who owned Caddy's Northstar V8's, each had the head sealing problems (out of warranty). 1 of them paid several thousand to fix his, then got rid of it. The other two, parked theirs & eventually managed to limp them to the dealer & each get a taxpayer funded "credit" in the Obummer bogus Cash for Clunkers deal. My parents said "NO" to Cadillac, & after several turbo diesel Mercedes (great cars BTW), they have driven Lexus (Toyota) products for the last 12 years. In that time, I bought a new 4Runner. My brother & his wife have owned Lexus & a 90's LandCruizer for years. Each one of them, the most dependable quality vehicles, we have ever driven or owned. Not a single thing has ever gone wrong with our V6 4Runner. I have local friends with late model GM SUV's that are routinely taking them to the shop to fix this or fix that, not oil changes. I've driven in a bunch of new GM products over the last 10 years, & their quality is definitely up, but am I ready to buy a "made in America" GM product, no possible way.

The build quality between my Aussie built '05 GTO and the same year Grand Prix is like night and day... The Aussie car is far superior in the fit, finish and feel as opposed to "American" GM products. I have put 30,000 (hard) miles on my Aussie car without any real problems.

Mentioned in another thread, personal mileage king was an 89 Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 & Commandtrack. It went 278K before being sideswiped by a semitrailer. For a while, I even drove it banged up down the right side pillars. Pulled in tons of partcars & project cars with the Cherokee. Always surprised folks the loads I'd pull with it, very tough for an early mid sized SUV with no frame, unitized construction. It's OD transmission was an Asian, built by Toyota, & never gave a hint of a problem. Other than a drivers door hinge separating from a weld, late in life, & a cracked exhaust manifold at 140K, great vehicle. With dynamax cat & muffler & one size taller tires, the '89 managed 23mpg out on the highway at 70. Still ran strong the day I hauled it to a friend's yard

Have owned my Cummins Dodge for little over 10 years, it has nearly 200K miles, only parts needed have been a hydraulic slave cyl for the clutch, brake pads, & shoes, & two battery cables. In buying it I specifically searched out one of the last 12V Cummins. Am seriously considering put a shortbed ext cab chassis under it along with a shortwide bed & handing the keys to my son. I've let him drive it several times & it would be a handful to park in HS parking lot.

Cool Well...

I suppose there are good AND bad in all makes. I see S-10 pickups and Blazers with up to 400K miles frequently. Tried the Toyota thing myself with a Camry...which ran fine but I was told that @ 40k...timing belt would most likely go taking most of the valves with it. When is the last time anyone has seen a rust-free Datsun? I have a new Terrain...and love it. My dad has a new Impala...and loves it. My son has a new Malibu...second one...and loves it! My son has two Chevy vans and a Chevy pickup that his business relies on. I'm sorry...you'll simply have a hard time convincing me that GM doesn't build quality vehicles. If you really want to buy Japanese or Korean or whatever...have at it. Just don't flaunt your ignorance by trying to convince satisfied GM owners that their vehicles are no good. Besides...not doing much to help the recovery of America, either. All I ask. BTW...what's out there for under $100k that can out-perform a Calloway Corvette? Yeah...that's what I thought. Ron

I'll have to agree with you there. I've had many, many reliable GM and other American made cars. The few foreign cars I've had were generally somewhat less user friendly than the American cars...Only had two cars that I would consider real, genuine Lemons...One the '85 Buick Century and the other a watercooled VW.

I'll throw in my two cents on this topic. I always have two vehicles for
my driver's.......a car that gets good gas mileage and a truck for out of town trips,
hauling groups of people or pulling my boat or enclosed car hauler. My previous truck
was a 93 two wheel drive half ton suburban. I had trouble with it from the get go, and the troubles really got worse when it hit 100,000 miles. All tolled I figure I must have spent
about 15,000 dollars on repairs over 10 years and 180,000 miles. I bought a new 2003
Silverado pickup and had trouble with it from the get go with electrical problems(radio, dash
cluster, A/c actuators in dash, etc. I'm in the car repair business and all my customers
were having real good luck with their Ford Expeditions , so I bought a used 99 model Expedition and sold the Silverado. I've had it for four years and not one thing has gone wrong
with it in that time.........it had 240,000 miles on it when I bought it and it has 280,000
miles on it now. It is still beautiful inside and out.....The original leather interior is still very
very nice and the paint on the outside is still gorgeous. The original headliner is not falling down like it would be on a Chevy truck. It still has it's original engine and automatic transmission neither of which have ever been out of the truck and I pull heavy trailers with it
all over the country. This is the best vehicle I have ever owned and I fully intend to put at least 500,000 miles on it.

I have done "scheduled routine maintenence" on my "2 owner"(my Aunt the original owner and me after 1988) 38 year old '74 Olds Cutlass Supreme-built 10/73 and have gotten 482,000 miles on the original Olds 350 with the same lower end that left the factory-still doesn't smoke or knock-uses about a qt now between oil changes. Tranny rebuilt once and a trans go kit installed (th350) installed new bearings and seals in the original rear end (still spinning the 3.08 ring and pinion it left the factory with.) I enjoy this smooth riding cruiser as my daily driver, and because I work on cars for a living- I enjoy not having to get in any of the complicated late model stuff to go home. This car has been reliable to the point if it did "blow up" tommarow, I wouldn't even be disappointed. I enjoy the fact if I ever did have a major problem with a drivetrain component, it wouldn't cost a small fortune to fix it. As far as the late model stuff that I have to repair during the day, I will note that the same thing happens to the newer cars when people who don't maintain them get a hold of it, they are finished in short order. Lately I have had a lot of Hondas and Toyotas with major repair problems on the hook that people buy second hand. They think because they buy a car with one of these "nameplates" that their problems are "over". Then they come in with blown head gaskets (no coolant), cracked heads (same problem), locked up/rod knocks (due to a car using a little oil that they never check). Numerous electrical gremlins due to the ever popular "rewiring" under the dash, and so forth. And the now popular broken off plastic door handles (especially on Toyotas). I don't have anything against those cars personnally (although I will never have one). I am just noting that these are 2 of the more popular Jap brands that people perceive as trouble free, that without proper care, wind up in the landfill like the rest of the vehicles do. So the lesson here is to maintain your car no matter what it is, learn a little bit about how your particular car operates, fix small problems before they become big ones. And don't treat it like a disposable investment. They are too expensive to replace. I know there will always be "lemons" here and there, but I have seen less of those as of late. A lot of the stuff manufacturers have problems with is when the try new technology (such as in the early '80s) with lightweight components and transverse fwd to save weight for mileage, trying to overcomplicate things (such as using actuators and a bcm for controling HVAC functions instead of a cable) (and the drive by wire nonsense)among many other things too numerous to mention. Lesson to manufacturers-use what works.

Thumbs up

1997 Chev k1500 4x4. 169k miles. Trans was rebuilt before I bought it.

I just replaced the fuel pump and front bearing/hub assemblies within the last year (it has 35 inch tires, so I wasn't suprised). Only regular oil changes aside from that.

Great truck! No rust and original paint. Plus, I can actually do the work on it!

My Lemans has around 280k miles on it. Engine was swapped at 268k because I wanted a 455, but it ran great in my Catalina after that for years. She's definitely starting to show her age, but she still is a great car. My '85 6.2D Suburban is at 180k miles with nothing done but fluid changes, an IP at 70k miles, and a glow plug controller.

jeffgoss and Ben M., you're babying those trucks..lol
That's very low mileage for the years stated. One is at something like 7K a year and the other 12K/year.
My '97 has about 280,000 on it...and I think that's about average mileage on that age vehicle at around 20K/year..

I rarely go places that require long drives ;-) And when I did, my ex wife always insisted on driving because she didn't like driving something "old." I did put almost 7k on it this year though. My co-worker has the exact same year and model truck but his is a 4x4, he has 210k on his. We both live 12-15 miles from work.

Speaking of 4x4 trucks...I sure wish I'd kept my black over red '85 Dodge Power Wagon shortbox. Got rid of it because it was costing me too much gas. It was almost a dollar a gallon then and I was driving 98 miles round trip to work 5 days a week and that '85 Dodge had the aerodynamics of a concrete block. Kinda looked like one actually.
