Kirban Update

Interesting reading on the wide variety of autographs members have. Regardless of how you personally feel about autographs no doubt it can add to the value in the long run in many cases especially if it was done on a car or object.

By a strange coincidence Russell Johnson passed away last week best known as the Professor on the hit TV show Gilliagans Island. He was a classmate of my Dads at Girard College which I mentioned about my Dad in my original post.

Between about 1983 and 1990, I frequently travelled between Charlotte and Los Angeles on company business. There were two routes to get there, and I travelled both. One route went through Atlanta, and the other went through Houston or Dallas. If I flew the red-eye out of LA back home, I could upgrade to first class both ways.

During those years, Dallas was being filmed. Many of the stars of Dallas flew first class, but I really never talked to any of them.

One one trip, Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson were travelling. I was able to speak to him briefly and tell him I owned a number of older T/As. He was very friendly.

On another trip, I got to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was extremely friendly, especially to the kids and the stewardesses. He was a big flirt.

I saw a number of professional wrestlers flying between Charlotte and Atlanta. Most were fairly friendly, some were real characters.

I probably have some autographs, but the only one I value is Leonard Nimoy. I was working for IBM in the mid-80s, and they participated in the Great Smokeout. The poster advertising the Great Smokeout showed Leonard Nimoy as Spock with the signature greeting, with the caption stating "Don't Smoke, Live Long, and Prosper". If you pledged to stop smoking or were smoke-free, you could put your name in a drawing for a poster signed by Leonard Nimoy. I didn't win the drawing, but I bought the poster from the winner.

Interesting meeting these people in your travels made me remember Burt Reynolds...in the late 1980s Burt owned a GNX and I sold him some parts for his car and got a autographed photo of him....at the time he was living in Jupiter, Florida.

Another one from me...concerning Don Garlits. I have the actual tail gate of his tow vehicle that is dented says BIG DADDY across the back and he signed it with the word oops 2009.

I was down at his Ocala, Florida location in the fall of 2009 attending his huge car show he does every fall. Don was the spokesperson that I lined up for zddplus so I was there mostly as a guest. I helped him set up some of the items he was going to sell at his event.

I ended up buying over 150 pistons and connecting rods from his top fuel dragsters and had him sign every one of them!

I had several Mopar collectors want to buy the tailgate from me as I was carrying to my truck. None of these people of course knew who I was and figured I was just going to resell it! It leans against my office desk in my home...has to be one of kind!

in 2001 I flew to Dallas and they lost my luggage.
I was waiting in line to find out what happened.
Eric Dickerson was in line in front of me.
When Eric found out our luggage (only his and mine) had been sent to another terminal, he asked if I would like to ride over there in his limo waiting outside.

Sure enough, driver was waiting outside and he drove us over to pick up our luggage.
I was now late to a meeting and my new boss who I had never met was waiting.
I told Eric my boss was not going to believe my story of why I was late.
Eric signed a 8 X 10 NFL glossy with my name on it, and said "just show this to your new boss when you tell him why you were late".

I got invited to Grand Opening of Arnold's course in Lake of the Ozarks.
He signed a golf ball, bag tag, my Hole-in-One card, and I got a picture with my wife, my 2 daughters, me and Arnie.

I never smoked, but I was a huge Star Trek fan. I just wanted the signed poster of Spock.

The plane I flew out of Charlotte was usually a smaller plane, but from Atlanta or TX I flew on a huge plane, a Lockheed 1011 I think. There were often celebrities sitting in the first class area, but you weren't allowed to bother them.

Arnold was a character. He flirted with the stewardesses, often being more entertaining than the movie. Sometimes he would wander back into coach and say hello to the kids. At least during the 80s, he was really friendly toward everybody. The only thing that surprised me is that he isn't as tall as I thought he was.

I have a baseball signed by Nolan Ryan and...

I was able to attend the 1984 Northwilkesboro 400 nascar race won by Tim Richmond and go to the RJR box after the race. Tim came to the box to speak to people, and I got him to sign my Pontiac hat on the bill. Incidentally, he won that race in a Pontiac:

I have 2 of these red Pontiac hats with white letters that the zone office gave to some of us that drove a Pontiac on a nascar parade lap. I got to do this once at Rockingham and once at Martinsville. I drove my Judge at Martinsville (1983 or before) and drove someone's else's Bonneville at Rockingham. That's how I got 2 hats.

My prize autograph is my hero Joe Frazier. I was at a diner in south Jersey and saw him leaving to his white Cadillac in the parking lot, and ran out. I thought he might be offended I approached him, but he was so kind. He talked to me for for ten minutes a out boxing. This was a few years ago, and he grimaced when I said Ali's name. I didn't ask for an alto graph, but he carried around photograph cards, he got two out and signed and gave them to me. Funniest thing was that he was so interested about my brief foray into the boxing world. Him, the champion of the world at one time. My hero and his signed pic my most prized possession.

Frazier got one of the rawest deals in the history of sports. A true humble gentleman who treated everyone equal. Never got his due. Then you had Ali, a racist loudmouth who initiated the low class behavior in sports and he became a hero. The media ignored Frazier and idolized Ali. Sorry to hijack this thread, Had to get that off my chest.
