If you are that concerned about no leaded gas add hardened valve seats. I ran unleaded in my 68 Nova 350 with no problems.

EPA Takes Final Step in Phaseout of Leaded Gasoline
[EPA press release - January 29, 1996] EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner today took the last steps concluding a 25-year Agency effort to phase out lead from gasoline. Browner signed a final rulemaking to eliminate requirements which became obsolete or unnecessary as a result of the ban, including certain recordkeeping and reporting requirements for gasoline refiners and importers. Also, motor vehicle manufacturers will no longer be required to place "unleaded fuel only" labels on the dashboard and on or around the fuel filler inlet area of each new motor vehicle. Deleting these provisions will decrease compliance costs for industry. "The elimination of lead from gas is one of the great environmental achievements of all time," Browner said. "Thousands of tons of lead have been removed from the air, and blood levels of lead in our children are down 70 percent. This means that millions of children will be spared the painful consequences of lead poisoning, such as permanent nerve damage, anemia or mental retardation." The actions taken today, although procedural, mark the end of a quarter-of-a-century of work to keep Americans safe from exposure to lead from gas. Adverse health effects from elevated levels of lead in blood range from behavior disorders and anemia to mental retardation and permanent nerve damage. Fetuses and children are especially susceptible to low doses of lead, often suffering central nervous system damage or slowed growth. Lead has been blended with gasoline, primarily to boost octane levels, since the early 1920s. EPA began working to reduce lead emissions soon after its inception, issuing the first reduction standards in 1973, which called for a gradual phasedown of lead to one tenth of a gram per gallon by 1986. The average lead content in gasoline in 1973 was 2-3 grams per gallon or about 200,000 tons of lead a year. In 1975, passenger cars and light trucks were manufactured with a more elaborate emission control system which included a catalytic converter that required lead-free fuel. In 1995 leaded fuel accounted for only 0.6 percent of total gasoline sales and less than 2,000 tons of lead per year. Effective January 1, 1996, the Clean Air Act banned the sale of the small amount of leaded fuel that was still available in some parts of the country for use in on-road vehicles. EPA said fuel containing lead may continue to be sold for off-road uses, including aircraft, racing cars, farm equipment, and marine engines. In addition to increasing the octane of gasoline, leaded gasoline also protected exhaust valve seats (in vehicles designed to operate on leaded gasoline) from excessive wear. Both of these objectives are now accomplished without the use of leaded gasoline. Owners of older vehicles with engines designed for leaded fuel may use an unleaded gasoline of comparable octane. For vehicles operating under higher loads, a lead substitute additive may be used, but owners should check with vehicle manufacturers as to which lead substitute additives are appropriate. |

Original post brings up some very good points but missed some of the most obvious which is that as with all new technologies or ideas, they are rarely implemented without someone figuring out how to make a buck off of you. There will also be hidden costs to everything and even "free" solar energy will be taxed in many ways - grid connection or if you plan storing in batteries, the cost and recycling of batteries, panels and other components will wind up costing well above actual cost due to regulation and an imperfect human world we live in.
As far as electric cars, they are here. The IC engine may not disappear entirely, however for the automobile, they are making more and more sense - the motor is quite simple technology and Tesla has demonstrated to doubters out there who thought electric power could not meet or exceed the performance of an IC engine. Battery weight and efficiency continues to evolve as will infrastructure and support. Where Tesla will eventually fall short is support for repairs on their fleet after warranties expire. I hear stories of over $1k just to replace a window regulator and standard parts from the Tesla factory that sells are over 10x the amount us car guys would ever expect to pay. As for other car companies, though Tesla seems to have a head start in technology, they are still a new company that does not quite have the economy of scale as other established car companies. GM and Ford focusing on trucks and SUVs for now is what will keep these companies afloat for the near term since both are far behind in trying to compete in the electric car market. The European auto-makers have been quicker to embrace the changes, not only to compete with Toyota's hybrids, but also out of necessity due to coming regulation. I'm surprised Toyota has been a bit slower to bring out their EV but that is Toyota's way of doing things - in all probability when either they or a European auto maker puts a car out for the masses, they likely will take a little bit of market away from Tesla. Once a truly affordable and workable EV comes out, IC engines will eventually be limited for use in trucks and specialty vehicles for a while. Unless Tesla gets a car for the masses out soon, the price of the current model 3's available will keep the Tesla a boutique car maker - I would not be surprised in the least bit if they either merge or are bought out if they plan to truly compete with the traditional large automakers.

The change I have seen is on the insurance side because some carriers are no longer letting their adjusters get on certain roofs and they are actually using drones to do the insurance adjustments like to take pictures of hail bruises on the shingles etc.. I did purchase a drone last year because some of the roofs I was having to look at, were far too steep and far too tall and the 4K camera on my drone took some great pictures but I really do enjoy getting up on the roofs and getting eyes and hands on it. |

It's a black shirt with a picture "in red" of the state of California. At the top of the state is the Hammer and sickle, a caption below it says " Don't let this happen to your state" ! We wear it proudly around town to warn people of our state of what can happen.

As soon as this monstrosity of a bill comes up for a vote the "new green dream" will go down in flames. AOC and the co sponsor of the bill are morons.
No airlines to be replaced with high speed rail, good luck taking that train to Europe. Rebuild/replace every building in the US for energy efficiency in 10 years, I believe that works out to 32,000 buildings per day...…………….. ![]() The bill could be from a 13 year old kid that knows absolutely nothing about the world and life=AOC. |

The Utopian dream has always been tempered by the reality of the costs in creating it.
I've worked in many new and existing buildings where they try to implement green initiatives and they always end up scaling back when they see the price of sustainability. Again, I believe that most people on here are intelligent and adaptable enough to accept the change. It's the overpromising that an older (speaking for myself) person might be a little cynical about. Not the technology. We've been promised stuff before like safe streets, the end of poverty and generally a better world. Seems to have gone the other way. |

Rare Earth Metals..... Almost all new technologies (Semiconductors, phones, Batteries for these cars as well as everything else) currently rely on the mining / production of Rare Earth metals of which most currently comes from China. There are already limitations on it's availability. I think this alone will soon slow some of the technologies mass distribution until good recycling practices are developed for them... IMOP...
