Surveyor, Thanks for the info. When you say the system is manuel, does this mean that the blockouts need to be operable? I thought the blockouts were open and there were screens recessed inside. My hood is origional, and there are holes located just above where the air cleaner goes. Am I missing something else? There is a good car show in Moab this weekend. I hope there will be some birds there for me to take lots of pictures of.

I just bought a 74 formula 400, factory ram air, four speed, Denver gold with standard black interior, formula wheel, am/8-track, console, 3.42's, rally dash, honeycombs, numbers matching, 80,000 miles, decent driver, but I will be doing some projects, shocks, bushings, exhaust, etc. I will post some pics when I get some things fixed. Cheers, Pete.

I'm a little late getting into this thread, but I figured to add another post, especially since I saw Critter's post (it's dave u. from poncho).

I've got a 76 455 T/A that I've owned since 94. It's seen some changes over the years, but it's still in primer. The 455 had 5K on a rebuild when I bought it so only the top end has seen any work. Currently the engine has ported 96 heads, an Ultradyne cam, Performer RPM intake, a home built 73 Buick 800 cfm quadrajet, headers and a Flowmaster exhaust. I've had custom springs made front and rear and the car is approximately 3 inches lower than factory specs for the 76s. This may sound sorta rice, but it sits pretty close to a 70 'bird stance, which is what I wanted. I also added subframe connectors, poly bushings and I forget the rest. Best time at the track is 13.965 (IIRC)@ 100 mph on the stock heads before they were ported. Since then I'm up to 102 mph but can't break into the 13s. A trip to the dyno showed I was putting down 350 ft-lbs at 1500 rpm so the cam centerline had to change. I moved the cam a bit and replaced the Holley with the current quadrajet and last run on the dyno was 320 hp and 400 ft-lbs at the rear wheels, with a big vacuum leak. I refuse to go back to the track till the 3.08s are replaced with 3.42s since the ST-10 is my current weak link. Hope to get some better numbers soon.

Dave

this will be my daily driver for the next 3 years of law school, as soon as i get around to her

barn fresh, there for at least 15 years

rally gauges, red buckets, 4 sp, honeycombs, original formula 400 with orig engine (minus carb, soon to have one)

they made some that are 'real' ram air?
my scoops in front are blocked, but i noticed vents under the bottom of the hood that seemed live

and i agree - the silver looks great on these cars
probably what i'll have to go

also, i noticed on the data plate a code 'W6' or something
That the handling package?

I fly in a 1976 Firebird Esprit. 350 v8 engine 3 speed auto trans. It has a 2bbl Rochester carb which has been giving me problems since I bought it.
I've only had it a few months, so I haven't had the time to do a 1/4 mile run.

Red interior and exterior, without the tail fin.

It has a lot of work to get it to where I want it, but the price was right when I bought it ($550), so I couldn't pass up the opportunity for this classic birdie.

My 1976 Trans Am currently has a 400 and a TH400 and 3.23 gears. It is Cameo White with black deluxe interior. It came with the AM/FM Stereo and 8-track tape player (which both work). I currently have a Pioneer CD player in the dash, but have kept the original radio. It has power windows and tilt steering. I've repainted it w/a base coat/clear coat and it only had very minor rust in the bottom rear 1/4's when I got it two years ago which is pretty amazing considering that it is an original Michigan car. I've currently run a best of 14.6 @ 96mph, but I'm building a 455 for it and am hoping to put a 200R4 overdrive transmission in it this summer. You can read about my 455 build up in the Drivetrain section of the bulliten board. I am currently working on a web site w/source information on 69-79 Trans Ams at http://www.transamsource.net (very incomplete at this time) that will eventually outline the buildup of my motor, have pics of my car, have stats, etc. etc.

Let's hear who else on this board has 74-76 Birds!!

Later,

Actually, 1974 was the last year that the real ram air system was available on the formula 400 and a small number of formula 455's. The sales code/UPC was 514/WU3 in 1974. The system is manual and has no valve's, etc. Danpaul, you can make your system fuctional by removing the hood intake plugs, and cutting outlet holes in the hood, I would suggest finding someone with an factory ram air hood and measureing the holes and positioning before doing any cutting, remember, measure twice, cut once. You will need rubber hoses that connect to the bottom of the hood via steel retaining rings held in place by screws. These rubber hoses compress and line up with the holes on the dual snorkel air cleaner housing.I hope this info helps.

I have a 76 T/A I bought when I was 17,its an all numbers matching 455 4spd car black on black coupe, deluxe interior package,am/fm with 8-track and even got a case of old 8-tracks, power windows, console,a/c, tilt, rear defrost, and ralley II wheels with original spare&jack. The car was in a farmers machine shed for 10 years when I bought it off him without a spec of rust and only 32000 original miles, and now the bird only has 37000 miles on it.

I also have a 1976 Trans Am. It's a Firethorn Red 455 4 speed car which has been restored to factory appearance. The 1970 YH 455 has been bored, stroked, deck, balanced and fitted with TRW forged flat tops on stock rods. The heads are ported and milled 4Xs with Ferrea 2.11/1.77" stainless valves and 1.6 full roller rockers from Nunzi. The camshaft is a Nunzi 2042HL rated at 235/[email protected] with .490/.500" lift with the 1.6 rockers. Induction consists of a rejetted 1971 455 HO 800cfm Q-jet and a 1972 455 HO aluminum intake. The exhaust is handled by repro RA d-port manifolds hogged to 2 1/2" with 2 1/4" pipes with 3 chamber Flowmaster true duals. On its first time out, the car ran a traction limited best of [email protected] with 60ft of 2.347. A Torque Tech 2 1/2" system, 2 chamber DeltaFlow Flowmasters and 1974 chrome exhaust extensions will be added within the next month. The cars can be seen at: http://www.geocities.com/rotella31/TransAm.html

I'm rockin' a white '75 Trans Am with a 400 and th350. It's currently getting bored 30 over with a Comp XE268 cam, #13 heads and a bunch of other goodies. I'm also switching to a 3.08 rear from an '81 TTA and I'm switching the front end to a '72.

Ambition is a poor excuse for not having sense enough to be lazy.
