On the tire issue that's been mentioned;
If changes must be made for safety sake I'd rather see some other forms of speed control. Maybe restrictions on cubic inches or something, don't mess with the factory appearing concept (tires) because that's what makes it exciting. You put race slicks on these cars then they become just another full blown race car... meh. I'll bet way back when this FAST series started out nobody thought low 10 's - 9 's would become the norm on skinny bias ply tires!

No wonder he had most of us covered on the indexes. It was kind of fun heads up but different classes handicapped off their class index. Wt/Factored HP.
Some on my Texas running buddies in NMCA were Buick GS guys Terry Paulk and Ray Witt. One year Terry built a "Stock Appearing" Buick for the Buick Nats that had some similar rules as FAST.

Wow, this is impressive! My buddy Lane has the 9 second F.A.S.T. Mustang, the level of effort behind these cars running these numbers is amazing.....and daunting!!
Congrats to all involved!!

The Mustang with the 429 option is another very good choice for FAST. That engine was one of Ford's better efforts, large bore, short stroke, excellent heads, and there is a lot of room for stroking them for increase CID.
If you look at the cars that run at the top you will notice that even though they are different makes, they have similar traits. BBC in a Corvette, Hemi in a Roadrunner, 429 Mustang, etc. The 400 Pontiac entry is certainly the underdog here, but as we have seen they have been able to get it to compete without tennis ball size intake runners.....Cliff

I read where they bought 3 sets of RA 2 heads and set them to different porters for this combo. Why try to get airflow out of a small port head, when its an all out max effort deal where no expense is spared? |

There is no cheating in this class. There are no engine rules, other then no nitrous and having to use an iron intake a Qjet. A complete max effort deal no expense spared. Who is going to find out or how?

I think they have to have correct casting numbers for engine and year. Bet they have a tech check if protested. Granted many wide open rules but I bet they do have some provision to verify.
I know NMCA did when I raced their stock classes. One Pontiac guy with an early SD motor had to come torn down he was so much faster to CC heads and check for porting. One Buick guy was found to have aluminum rods in his motor. Next race he was over 0.5 sec slower!

Some have been drive train, some body work and some suspension. The racers, for the most part, all know each other and know what's going on with others cars. Even so, the competitive spirit keeps some looking for that little bit that'll get them just a little quicker.

"I wouldn't say there is no cheating… There are a few top tier racers in the class that have pushed the rule book a little beyond what's acceptable. There have been guys who have been caught and guys who were rumored to be cheating, but were never caught and were legal the next time the car was out."
You'll find more of that sort of thing in Pure Stock vs FAST, as in FAST it simply has to be "factory appearing" or basically look correct and have the correct part number(s), etc. "Stock" classes in just about every sort of drag racing have always had some folks pushing limits and going outside boundaries. Some get away with it, some don't, and for sure there isn't anyone looking at you real hard until you start beating up on everyone!.......FWIW.....Cliff

I think we all know there are 2 kinds of drag racers; cheaters and losers!. You are a cheater when what you have managed to do to make your car really fast is judged by another to be cheating. When what you have accomplished is not questioned or judged to be cheating, you are just "brilliant". I suggest reading the Smokey Yunick book series to explore the fine line between cheating and brilliance. Was Smokey a serial cheater or a genius? Choose your side.

Be very easy to see that. The only rules on this deal is stock appearing. Of course you can't run aluminum heads block, aftermarket block ect. The internals is everything about goes. Any displacement cam compression ect. There are no specs in the rules for the heads other than the casting number. That's very easy to change, guys have been doing it for years. |
